M81 & M82 - Bode’s Galaxy . . . . . . This might be the most productive month I’ve ever had since I started imaging 4 years ago. I reshot all the targets I did in my first year plus some extra, so there will be more coming in the next weeks! My travel to La Palma was amazing - sadly only 3 clear nights but it is a truly beautiful place during the day as well, I’ll be back next year! So this is actually only 3h 40 minutes from Puntagorda, La Palma, Bortle 2. But you can already make out the faint IFN in the background around M81. I’m pretty proud on how it turned out - sadly the weather said nope to my planned 10 hours on that target. I’d recommend checking the full res on my astrobin though. ✨Day 261 part 1 - May 2nd, 2024 - We’re lucky to have another clear night! I’m going for more Messiers of course, but now with the Megrez 😌 I started with M57, then moved to M56, unfortunately I didn’t notice how blurry it still was. Luckily I fixed it before moving to M104, and now M104 is definitely a new favourite 🙃 so I want another night imaging this target. I went for Markarian’s Chain as well. I went to M38 but only got a few before moving over to M90 to finish the night. Still have some practicing to do with focusing!! Images: -The first slide is the zoom in on M104 galaxy, my new favourite ✨ -The second slide is the original, 1min exposure of M104, the Sombrero Galaxy, located on the border of Virgo and Corvus -The third slide is the original, 1min exposure of M57, the Ring nebula, located in Lyra -The fourth slide is the zoom in on the blurriness 😩 -The fifth slide is the original, 1min exposure of M56, globular cluster located in Lyra. There was so much blur it wasn’t even worth the zoom in 🙃 -The sixth slide is the original, 1min exposure of Markarian’s Chain, located in Virgo. Mainly going for the Messier objects, but you can see there’s quite a few galaxies! Definitely need to do this target area again -The seventh slide is the zoom in on Markarian’s Chain -The eight slide is the original 1min exposure of M39, open star cluster, located in Cygnus. I think because it was a higher target I decided to move over, I only got a few images and they didn’t turn out too great -The ninth slide is the original 1min exposure of M90, spiral galaxy located in Virgo. You can also see M89 and M58 I. The far left 🙌🙌 -The tenth slide is the zoom in on M90 . . . . . . . . #messier #messierobjects #williamoptics #astrophotography #deepsky #canonrebel #canonrebelxs #darksky #astronomy #starscape #exploretheoutdoors #nightsky #charlesmessier #galaxy #virgo #lyra #constellation #telescopephotography #lesetoiles #starcluster #markarianschain #galaxysedge #galaxyseason #megrez80 #ontario #ontariocanada

The Whirlpool Galaxy aka M51 aka NGC 5194. After an hour of troubleshooting my autoguiding setup, I finally gave up and tracked unguided. 1 minute subs for 2.5 hours, throwing away more than half of my subs due to trailing. M81 - Bode’s Galaxy, because it’s Galaxy Season! 🌌 Finally a clear night sky, sadly light pollution was an issue and so I was “forced” to image something high up in the sky. I went for M81 in the Big Dipper asterism as it was the first target I ever observed through my Dobsonian, so that brought back some memories. As I’ve used the Seestar and M81 was near zenith walking noise became an issue, that’s why the image is heavily cropped and looks zoomed. Still working on my Siril post processing, if anyone has some advice on how to make my images less noisy (the Seestar auto stack almost always looks smoother than a manual stack with Siril and it’s denoise function) that would be much appreciated. I’m still happy that the spiral arms and some filaments are visible, so that’s progress. #m81 #bodesgalaxy #messier #messierobjects #astrophotography #astronomy #amateurastrophotography #amateurastronomy #galaxy #galaxyseason #backyardastronomy #backyardastrophotography #graxpert #siril #seestars50 #seestar

#centaurus #galaxies #galaxyseason #telescopephotography #astrophotography #astrofotografia #southsky

Finally its Galaxy Season again! Im Zentrum wurde übrigens mithilfe des Very Large Array heiße Ammoniakwolken (138°C) und Siliziumwolken entdeckt IC 342 is located about 11 Million lightyears from the Milkyway with a diameter of around 60.000 lightyears. Spring is a time for observing galaxies. As Earth orbits around the Sun, its inclination relative to the plane of the Milky Way changes, leading to different seasonal arrangements of the sky. Specifically, in spring, the night sky is oriented perpendicular to the plane of the Milky Way, which means we have a better view of other galaxies beyond our own. The first image of the spring season features the galaxies M81 and M82. They form a pair of galaxies located in the constellation Ursa Major. M81, also known as Bode's Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy located approximately 12 million light-years away from us. It is one of the brightest galaxies in the night sky and exhibits well-defined spiral arms. Accompanying M81 is M82, known as the Cigar Galaxy. This starburst galaxy is located about 11.5 million light-years away from us and stands out with its prominent bands of dust and intense star-forming regions. Although initially classified as an irregular galaxy, the discovery of spiral arms visible in the near-infrared changed its status. Both of these galaxies are gravitationally bound to each other and are popular observational targets for astronomers. #astrophotography #astrophoto #galaxy #m81 #m82 #bodesgalaxy #spring #nightsky #galaxyseason #night #physics

Monday night turned out to be the clearest and darkest night of this astronomy season, meaning I could set up my telescope for a long imaging session stretching into the early hours of the morning. To continue my series of galaxy images, I chose the M81 group of galaxies in the constellation Ursa Major as my target, as these are bright objects in the night sky and close together in my equipment’s field of view. This image has the longest exposure of any astrophotograph I’ve taken, with a total integration time of 2.5 hours. After many more hours of capturing calibration frames to remove dust spots, vignetting, and noise from the image, it’s finally ready to share. The largest galaxy here is M81, Bode’s Galaxy, a grand design spiral galaxy, 96,000 light-years across, situated 12 million light-years away. At its centre is a supermassive black hole 70 million times the mass of the Sun. To its right is M82, the Cigar Galaxy, 40,800 light-years across and 12 million light-years away. This is a starburst galaxy meaning it has an exceptionally high rate of star formation compared with most other galaxies; stars form in M82 10 times faster than in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. This high rate of star formation is caused by the gravitational influence of its larger galactic neighbour, M81. The third galaxy pictured is the much fainter and less defined NGC 3077, a small elliptical galaxy 12.8 million light years away. Probable gravitational interactions with M81 and M82 have disrupted its form into scattered dust clouds, and caused increased rates of star formation in a similar way to M82 — note the bright star forming region at its centre. #astrophotography #galaxies #galaxy #galaxyseason #bodesgalaxy #cigargalaxy #messier81 #messier82 #m81 #m82 #ngc3077 #skywatcher #ed80 #nikon #d7200 #shotonnikon #nikonphotograpgy #astronomy #ursamajor #nightsky

Having added data over multiple nights, this is what I got for M51, the whirlpool galaxy. This photo is a result of stacking and processing 731 frames (368 ×20s + 363×10s = over 3 hours of data) in siril. The driveway lights interfere with the telescope. Graxpert works like a charm in removing the gradients and denoising the photo. #m51 #whirlpoolgalaxy #astrophotography #seestar #seestars50 #astrophotography #galaxy #spacelovers #space #nebula #m51 #whirlpoolgalaxy #smarttelescope #zwo #highpointscientific #nightphotography #nightskyphotography #nightsky #starrynight #stargazing #galaxyseason #awesome #instagood #awesome #potd #apod #stars #usa #michigan #detroit #india

Sombrero Galaxy (M104) I had a couple of hours of luminance data on the Sombrero galaxy from back in February that I hadn’t processed yet due to wanting to add some colour data. I’m not sure if/when I’ll get to the colour this year so I thought I would process and post what I have now. It’s a super tiny target for my fov so the image is quite heavily cropped. 📸 64 x 120s Astronomik L3 filter Askar FRA400 HEQ5 mount ZWO asi2600mm Pro gain 100 ZWO 30mm f/4 guidescope with asi120mm mini guide cam EAF EFW PPBAV Asiair Plus Beecroft Observatory #sombrerogalaxy #m104 #galaxy #galaxyseason #2024astrophotography #skywatcher #askarfra400 #HEQ5 #nebula #astrophotography #backyardastronomy #backyardastrophotography #womeninastro #ontarioastronomy #ldnont #womenshootingstars #rasc #ontario #asi2600mm #zwo #skyshedpod #backyardobservatory #skyandtelescopemag #womanastrophotographer

Markarian’s Chain. This is a stretch of galaxies found in the constellation Virgo. The Virgo constellation is rich with galaxies and indeed this galactic avenue forms the heart of the Virgo Cluster – a superdense cluster of galaxies. This photo may not necessarily be the most visually striking, but it’s absolutely brimming with individual galaxies, each containing trillions of stars and a universe unto itself. This photo was a good 5 hours of graft in a field resulting in rather fragmented sleep, but it was very worth it, I think! Markarian’s chain consists of a group of galaxies which all share common motion through space. I have included an annotated photo of the member galaxies in the second panel, although it’s worth noting that M84 / NGC 4374 doesn’t quite move with that of the rest of the group. A pair of interacting galaxies – NGC 4438 and NGC 4435 – make up the centre of the chain and are known as ‘The Eyes’. There are plenty of associated galaxies and I have included a completely plate-solved and fully annotated version of the photo (thanks to astrometry.net) in the third panel to give a sense of how many galaxies there are in just one picture! #astrophotography #deepskyphotography #rollrightstones #markarianschain #galaxy #galaxyseason #gostargazing #virgo

THE WHIRLPOOL GALAXY - or the answer to the question "What do I shoot in April?" It's one of my absolute favorites. The first time I aimed for M51 in 2020, I had no idea what I was doing. Attempting it with a 600mm objective and a full-frame camera was a bit of a long shot. A year later, I utilized a very exclusive lens (600mm F/4) with a 2x teleconverter on my modest star tracker. You can find the resulting images further down. This time, there's no denying that it was genuine astrophotography that I was pursuing. For the first time, I employed a cooled mono camera, LRGB filters, and a large aperture telescope. Over two nights, I accumulated about 7.5 hours of data, mostly under very favorable conditions. Processing such data is truly a pleasure. I can't wait to venture out and capture the next target. And if I have to wait for clear skies until next April, you know what the target will be. A type II Supernova was discovered on April 11, 2024, by ATLAS in NGC3621. The new transient was mag. 18.915 at the discovery, but it’s rapidly rising. I took this picture last April 15 from a Chilean remote telescope, measuring a mag. 12 (confirmed by Pan-STARRS Group photometry on April 16). Today it’s the brightest SN discovered this year and the closest to Earth since SN 2023ixf, discovered on May 19, 2023. NGC 3621 is a field spiral galaxy located at a distance of approximately 22 million light-years (6.7 Mpc) in the equatorial constellation of Hydra. It is relatively bright and can be well observed with moderate-sized telescopes. The galaxy has a diameter of about 93,000 light-years (29,000 pc) and is inclined at an angle of 25° relative to the edge-on view. The morphological classification of NGC 3621 is SA(s)d, which indicates that it is an ordinary spiral galaxy with loosely wound arms. There is no evidence of a central bulge. Detailed information and updates can be found at Latest Supernovae (rochesterastronomy.org). The image was taken using Telescope Live CHI-1 remote telescope in Rio Hurtado Valley (Chile); it’s the sum of 20 sub-frames of 300” (5 x each LRGB filter). The Sunflower galaxy M63 Even though it is 27 million light years away, this galaxy is considered close to us in astronomical terms. For this photo, I used two seperate filters to bring out better color, escpecially in the red areas. One filter blocks most wavelenghts of light but lets Hydrogen Alpha and Oxygen III past to hit my camera sensor. H-Alpha (red) is prevelant in space emits light from hydrogen atoms. The other filter blocks Infared and UV light but allows all visible spectrum of light. My previous galaxy photos only used this filter. I plan to use this technique more in the future, especially on galaxies to try to make them pop! 🌌 Equipment AM5 Mount w/ TC40 Tripod ASI533MC PRO cam Skywatcher 6" Quattro SVBONY sv165 mini guide scope ASI120MM Mini Guide Cam Optolong L-Extreme 45 x 120sec UV/IR Cut 152 x 120sec Asiair Plus #astronomy #astrophotography #deepsky #sunflowergalaxy #deepspace #galaxyseason #m63 #zwoam5 #asiair #asi533mcpro #skywatchertelescope #bortle6 #pixinsight

My latest attempt at Markarian’s Chain from last Friday’s session. Since it was my first time back at my favorite dark site this year, I had planned on at least 2 hours of imaging, starting around 9:30pm and ending around midnight. However, I was having trouble with my StarSense of all things as my goto just wasn’t working properly, and when I finally got past that issue and began the process of calibrating my autoguider in PHD2, CPWI suddenly decides to crash on me. I spent more time than I probably should have for the glitch to clear on its own, before finally just powering off my mount, powering it back on, and going through the entire alignment process all over again. Everything was working properly after that. By the time I was finally able to begin imaging though, it was 10:30, and I could only get about an hour in before my wife and I started getting too chilled from the dropping temperatures. Anyway, here’s the product of that experience. Feel free to flip to the second image for the annotated version.
