What an absolutely incredible show the aurora put on for us tonight in Southwestern Ontario! We ventured out to Elginfield Observatory just north of the city of London to watch the aurora as I wanted to make sure we were away from city lights towards the north. We arrived just as the aurora started and it was everywhere all around us! I had anticipated only seeing it towards the north, but nope, it was north, south, straight up above us, east, and west! You could see beautiful pillars and streamers and could see some of the colour (though it showed much better on camera). Here are a few images taken with my iPhone, more to come in the next few days as I review the ones taken with the DSLR camera. M5 is a globular star cluster in the constellation Serpens Caput (the Serpent’s Head), that hosts hundreds of thousands of stars tightly bound by gravity. Its dense core is home to many ancient stars, some over 13 billion years old. It’s easily visible with binoculars but a small telescope may be needed to resolve some of the individual stars surrounding it. *** Reposting again because I only realized today that Instagram had posted low-resolution versions of the images in the previous post 🙂 The Spindle Galaxy, M102, is a galaxy in the Northern hemisphere that is rarely imaged despite its brightness. If you take a look at it in planetarium software like stellarium, this galaxy doesn't seem to have any features and looks a small bright blob of light. I'm guessing that's why most people steer away from it. But if the seeing is good, you can actually reveal some pretty cool structure in this galaxy, as you can see in this highly cropped image, which is only 280 pixels wide. This galaxy has a central dark dust lane that we are looking at edge-on. This target was so small with my scope that the dust dust lane was only one pixel wide. The seeing was good enough to resolve this and also see a little bit of structure of the dust lane at its outer edges. If you look closely, you will also see the stellar disc extending outwardly from the dust lane, And you can even see that the dust lane is slightly angled relative to the stellar disk, which is likely due to gravitational warping caused by previous interaction with another galaxy. Swipe further to the right and you will see these features really clearly in the Hubble image of this target, which is quite breathtaking and shows the detail and structure of the dust lane and the outer stellar disc. The fourth image shows the full field view and how small this galaxy was in the initial image. Bode’s Galaxy (M81), The Cugar Galaxy (M82) and the IFN I spent a good chunk of imaging time this spring on M81/82 hoping to catch some of the integrated flux nebula (IFN) that is in the same area. Though it looks like it’s related the M81/82 galaxies, it isn’t. It’s much closer, being found in and around our own Milky Way galaxy, and is being lit up collectively from the glow of all the stars in the Milky Way. As for M81 and M82 I tried to bring out as much detail in these two as possible. Since I only imaged in LRGB I didn’t quite catch the whole red outburst found in M82, but a good amount still managed to come through. Wild's Triplet is a fascinating set of interacting spiral galaxies some 200 million light years away from Earth. This is a tiny target that is usually only imaged by big scopes under very dark skies, so I thought it would be fun to see what could be achieved shooting with a mid-sized 4.5" refractor into the Bortle 9 skies to my south. It is pretty mind-blowing to think that despite the light pollution, it is possible to look back in time as see these ancient galaxies from an urban backyard, and to also capture the trail of light showing evidence of the interaction between two of the galaxies in the triplet. Swipe right to see the incredile image of Wild's Triplet shot by the Hubble. It was also interesting to see the small reddish galaxy that lies adjacent to one of the triplet galaxies (shown in the red box in the third image that you see swiping right). This galaxy is known as LEDA 1065954 and is likely much further away than the main galaxies in the triplet. I couldn't find any data on how it is away, but I'm guessing that it's at least another 100 million light years away. The fourth image shows the full field view and how tiny this target was in my field - the galaxies were only about 20 pixels wide! I’ve been working most of the week on my image of totality. The eclipse itself has an enormous dynamic range that is impossible to capture in a single photo. During totality I took a variety of images at different shutter speeds with the hopes of being able to create an HDR image that will maintain the detail in the corona without over exposing any particular region. I think I finally have a version I’m mostly happy with. It’s not even close to the real event but perhaps gives a better approximation than my previous images. The Great North American Eclipse gave us a rare view of the sun's corona - but did you know that most of the spectacular and brilliant light that we saw was not emitted by the corona, and has an entirely different origin? Almost all of the light that we see from the corona during a total eclipse actually originates from the sun's visible surface (the photosphere). The corona has a very hot plasma of free electrons that scatters this light in an elastic scattering process known as Thompson scattering. So when you look at the corona, you are actually seeing this plasma illuminated by the photosphere, and the structure that you see in the corona is the effect of the sun's magnetic field on this plasma! The corona also includes ions that actually emit light, and dust that scatters light, but the light from the portion of the corona near the sun that we see is dominated by Thompson scattering from free electrons. This portion of the corona is called the K-corona, K for continuum (in German, where it starts with a k), because Doppler broadening of the photospheric Fraunhofer absorption lines leads to a continuous spectrum. This image comes from a single exposure shot during totality with my 4.5" telescope, processed to show the bright intensity of the K-corona and the dramatic contrast with the dark lunar disk eclipsing the sun. The first appearance of the diamond ring as the sun began to emerge from behind the moon after totality. Shot in mono from Magog, QC. For the eclipse, I set up a data logger and took temperature readings every 10 minutes. I organized my data and made a graph. When I started the data logger around 2:10 pm, the temperature was 16.9 C. I was fortunate enough to witness the total solar eclipse in Magog, QC, surrounded by a wonderful group of fellow eclipse watchers in a park overlooking Magog lake, where we were all stunned by the sudden transformation that took place during totality. It is something difficult to put into words, and I felt like I had been instantly teleported to another world, with the eclipsed sun looking like something from a fantasy novel, with the spectacular corona spreading out from the dark orb of the moon, the skies having a colourful dim glow in all directions, and Venus and Jupiter shining nearby, all giving a sense of calm and beauty that I have never experienced before. What made the eclipse very special for me was the incredible sense of communion I felt with those around me and the other astrophotographers that I had been messaging with in the days and minutes leading up to totality. I am indebted to Reina and Vaughan for sharing their sets of binoculars and giving me the unforgettable close up view of the corona and the brillant promineces with their incredible garnet hues.
