British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1775 - 1851, is acknowledged as one of the most important and innovative landscape painters in art history. While he is predominantly known and described as a landscape artist, Turner also made seascapes, riverscapes and cityscapes. He executed them in oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints. As a true innovator, he made all these genres completely his own. Turner infused his atmospheric paintings with weather phenomena such as fierce storms and sunsets, with historical, mythological and biblical references and with modern elements regarding transport, technology and industry. Turner’s compositions are often based on the many drawings he made during his travels. He combined them with great freedom which resulted in balanced, yet often topographically incorrect end results. Although Turner started in a detailed and dark academic style, he developed an expressive technique in which formal aspects such as color, light and gestural brushwork are more important than the objective representation of the natural world. When you encounter Turner’s works in museums, the luminous and atmospheric quality of them will often overwhelm you. This work features a scene derived from Book IX of Homer’s the Odyssey. In the passage Ulysses and his men escape from the cyclops Polyphemus and sail away. Ulysses blinded the cyclops in his sleep with a torch. He is standing on his ship in a red cloak with his arms raised. In one of them he holds the torch. While sea nymphs accompany the ship and its prow, Turner painted a vague outline of Polyphemus lying on his back. Following on from Gainsborough portrait of the ‘Lady in Blue’ in last week’s post, the Suffolk-born genius developed a career synthesizing the two great obsessions of British art - the portrait and the landscape - in paintings flattering the 18th Century landed class. In 1759 Gainsborough moved to Bath, where the gentry put on their best wigs, made marriages and took the waters. Gainsborough figured they might also like to have their portrait taken and he duly set up in business. This painting commemorates the marriage of George Byam to Louisa Bathurst. The couple are painted strolling in a poetic landscape to show the viewer their ‘sensibility’ as admirers of nature. When the couple’s daughter Selina was born, she was added to the painting… and Louisa’s dress was repainted from pink to a more fashionable blue. The original colour of the gown can still be seen in the child’s rosy red cheeks. There are lots of animals to visit including pigs 🐖 ducks 🦆 chickens 🐓 turkeys 🦃 goats 🐐 alpacas 🦙 ponies, donkeys, sheep 🐑, the chickens roaming free today. There is also a large play area with a separate fenced area for under 5s, several slides and trampolines. At the other side of the campsite there is a short woodland walk where fairy doors can be spotted as well as different toy animals hanging from the trees. After purchasing the tickets we were told this only covered the grounds and the downstairs (4 rooms and hallway). What a con. Thanks @ntmontecutehouse ~ we felt a bit stung ~ especially the lack of curation and information. I really loved a white scented dog rose in the garden. In the shop they tried to help with the variety, but did not know it ~ sadly not available in the shop, so went to @eastlambrookmanor, where there’s a @margeryfishgarden. She was very helpful, but didn’t feel they had the right rose! This change aims to remind kids that happiness isn't the only emotion and to spark conversations between families about feelings. Gainsborough, whose birthday is celebrated today, had a keen love of the countryside around Sudbury, Suffolk, where he was born. He relished the respite he found riding on horseback in the countryside with his friends, memorizing and sketching landscape motifs. “Suffolk Landscape” was painted in the mid-1750s and clearly expresses his genuine delight in the peaceful bounty of the English countryside. Even the backgrounds of his portraits like “Portrait of a Woman, Possibly of the Lloyd Family” (c. 1750) feature detailed plants and other beautiful elements of an outdoor setting. Our newest Gainsborough acquisition, “Going to Market, Early Morning” (c. 1773), is a treasured example of how the artist, in his maturity, worked on a large scale and introduced a modern element to the landscape near the city of Bath: the contemporary social life of the countryside, observed firsthand.
