Happy Mother's Day! Today we’re highlighting an unconventional mother figure in New York City history: Janet Lord Roper (1873–1943) who served as the Seamen’s Church Institute (@seamenschurch) (SCI)’s House Mother from 1915 until her death in 1943. The Seamen’s Church Institute of New York and New Jersey was founded in 1834 as an organization that served mariners in the Port of New York, and it is still active today. Dedicated to the welfare of sailors, SCI provided a number of different educational and religious services, and at times lobbied for legal reform to protect sailors’ rights. The SCI headquarters at 25 South Street opened in 1913 with 580 beds for sailors and included a restaurant, post office, chapel, and reading room. Over nearly three decades, Mother Roper became a confidante and friend to many of the seafarers who stayed at the SCI headquarters in Lower Manhattan. She kept in touch with many of them by writing letters. A 1927 article once quipped that “Mother Roper's ‘sons’ are legion. She does not pretend to know them all by name, but she accepts each claimant so long as he is a sailor.” From the beginning of the First World War, family members inundated Roper’s office with mail, searching for missing seafarers, lost amidst the chaos of the conflict. With her global network of contacts, Roper formed the Missing Seamen’s Bureau of the SCI—a department dedicated to searching for missing seamen on behalf of their worried friends and families. The Bureau would locate over 6,500 sailors during her tenure. Upon her death, President Franklin D. Managing to create places that challenge both reality and your imagination, that is what artist and photographer Erik Johansson does. #FromTheArchives: Erik Johansson's "Places Beyond" exhibition, on view at Fotografiska Stockholm in 2019, and Fotografiska Tallinn in 2020, messed with our minds (in the best way). In “Places Beyond”, Johansson created his scenes by capturing real elements - from sweeping landscapes to simple objects - and then digitally piecing them together into one smooth alternate reality. In his own words, “even if the worlds I create often seem impossible, I want them to feel like they could exist. Realism is an important ingredient in my image-making. I always prefer to shoot as much as possible on site, in the actual environment where it's meant to take place, rather than in a studio, and then combine it later.” Take this photo, for example, of a canoe slicing through a lake that cracks like glass. It prompts us to reflect on how we interact with nature through weird and fantastical stories. These stories resonate across cultures and age groups, challenging both reality and our imagination, while mixing humor with the bizarre. For Johansson, each piece started with a "but what if...?" Like, what if someone's daily job was to keep the moon shining bright or to switch from day to night? Johansson's skill isn’t just in dreaming up these scenes but in how meticulously he crafted them. #FromTheArchives 'Cast of Thousands', exhibited at the 2019 British Ceramics Biennial. 'Cast of Thousands' was part of the original Clay School programme and brought together schoolchildren in Stoke-on-Trent with leading ceramic artists to create and participate in a large-scale public art event. Events were held in schools and other organisations across the city and featured a mass making of handmade ceramic figures, representative of the population of Stoke-on-Trent, the Clay People of the Ceramic City. jeonju 🎪 our two days here were the most jampacked of this entire trip as it was spent both in jeonju and its neighboring county, wanju! there's a lot to see and do in these areas, especially for us who like to avail of various types of activities 🤪 we also coincidentally aligned our visit with the jeonju bibimbap festival, so the village was very lively and full of events! so fun to be able to experience a local festival ☺️ 1-2: jeonju hanok village 😍 3: jeonju is known as the 🇰🇷 food capital so of course...🤤 (a) injeolmi soft serve was rly good! (b) a lovely tea ceremony at @gyodong_tea, (c) a well-deserved full makgeolli table set meal after a very eventful day! (d) it's a bibimbap festival! ofc the 비빔밥 is amazing~ plus points for free yummy pumpkin sikhye! 4: cheongyellou bridge + a lovely river right outside our hanok stay makes me a cheerful gal 5-6: enjoyed the festivities so much that i took a nap at the omokdae pavilion 🤣 7: a contemporary circus act by @bongnjoule got everyone gasping 🫢 8: a moju making class! it's a rice wine (makgeolli) based beverage mixed with herbs and spices, so warm and good for the tummy :-) 9: shoot locations for #twentyfivetwentyone 🥺 one of the few notable kdramas that i actually liked the ending! ofc had to seek out these spots even if i got lost looking for the tunnel by myself lol 10: morning light at our hanok stay 😌 i just love staying in traditional hanoks 🥹 #korea #jeonju #gisellewandersoff #fromthearchives oct 2023

If you have been following my stories for a while you probably know how mad I am for nightjars, but I have very bad luck with them and if I am lucky I'll see them once in an year. In Ananthagiri there is an area where nightjars are apparently seen commonly. We saw this one because a birder had told us that there was one nearby. •Rodion Ladislau Roșca spent his lifetime creating music that was ambitious, groundbreaking and innovative. He was a pioneering composer, a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer. He pushed musical boundaries to their limits. This he did as a solo artist and with his group Rodion G.A. Despite being popular in their native Romania, Rodion G.A. had to work under an oppressive Communist regime only releasing two tracks that appeared on a compilation album in 1981. Rodion, however, made extensive recordings in his home studio. This new collection of material recorded between 1981 and 2017 is taken from that archive. Rodion died in 2021 aged 67. He has also been described as “the Godfather of Romanian electronic music.” Rodion G.A.’s music has been curated on a number of releases “The Lost Tapes” (2013), “Behind The Curtain (The Lost Album)” (2014) “Delta Space Mission” (2014) and “Rozalia” (2018). This new collection – compiled by Derek Anderson – draws on unreleased material from his and Rodion Ladislau Roșca's personal archives. Some tracks sound like a metallic Foxx-era Ultravox! Others showcase electronic melodic pulsebeats and psychedelic workouts. We also see the first release of ‘Acolo Unde E Mister’ and ‘Aminitiri’ originally released in 1981 on the “Formatii Rock 5” LP compilation and ‘Stele Si Lumini’ best-known for being performed on Romanian TV on New Years’ Eve in 1981. Rodion G.A.’s music has been critically acclaimed in the music press and this new collection will be welcome amongst his international legion of fans. Ace Records, 2024. The Cason family were influential throughout South Florida and were pioneers in churches, philanthropy, medicine, sports, banking, education, and agriculture. Pictured here is Andrew Evander "Van" Cason, Sr., c. 1940s, with his dog, Spot. Van Cason was the son of Rev. J.R. Cason, Sr. and brother to Dr. J.R. Cason, Jr. His stepson, Jack L. Saunders Sr., became mayor of Delray Beach in 1948 and served for several terms.
