It was the last day working with our feeder school Mann Middle on the site specific Friendship Bracelet project for the World Design Capital @wdcsandiegotijuana2024 . They had been working on the designs for over 2 weeks, and the final product was great! During class today the students wrote reflections about their work and shared it with the class. . This site specific installation was developed by artist and resource teacher @catchiuphillips for @sdusdvapa ! The painted designs will be used in a giant friendship bracelet that will be woven into the wall at the Boarder Friendship Park for the World Design Capital 2024! . Changsha China Friendship Garden - Lake Phalen. East Saint Paul is a diverse working-class neighborhood that has the largest Hmong population of any other city in the U.S. An ethnic group from southern China, the first Hmong refugees arrived in Minnesota in 1977. This garden is to promote Minnesota’s understanding of the cultural and ancestral connection between Hmong people in Saint Paul and Hmong people in their sister city of Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province. The garden was approved in 2011, construction began in 2016, and it was opened to the public in July 2019. The centerpiece of the garden is the Xiang Jiang Pavilion, a three-story replica of the Aiwan Pavilion in China. There is also an arch, a bridge, and the Hmong Cultural Plaza. It has become are an integral part of the area and community. We marveled at the majestic Menelik Palace, a symbol of Ethiopia’s past grandeur. As we wandered through the lush gardens, the air was filled with a sense of calmness and beauty. Exploring the Ethnographic Museum was an awe-inspiring experience, as we discovered fascinating artifacts that unveiled the captivating stories of this remarkable nation’s grand history. During our visit to Unity Park, we also had the pleasure of exploring two remarkable zoos. The Black Mane Lions’ Zoo and the Unity Zoo, thoughtfully designed to resemble the animals’ natural habitats, allowed us to witness the beauty of 37 mammals and various bird species. It was a delightful encounter with Ethiopia’s diverse wildlife, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world around us. Our adventure continued to Friendship Park, a serene oasis where nature and tranquility intertwine. We visited our feeder school Mann Middle to introduce the site specific Friendship Bracelet project for the World Design Capital @wdcsandiegotijuana2024 . . Representatives from The Right Place, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Michigan Legislature stopped by the Kent District Library - Cascade Township Branch on Monday afternoon to take in construction progress at Friendship Park. Cascade Township Parks & Recreation Director Melanie Manion, Township Manager Jade Smith and Township Supervisor Grace Lesperance all spoke to the incredible skill and speed in which Cascade's newest outdoor gathering space is coming together. Friendship Park construction is being funded in part thanks to a $450,000 Revitalization and Placemaking Program (RAP) grant from the MEDC. The Right Place played a critical role in ensuring Cascade's grant application was competitive.
