Coming this July, we will conclude our Black and Gold Anthologies, with Though We Bleed. Fun facts! What Darkness Fears is our best seller. It used to have ribbons on the cover. It used to be titled What Nightmares Fear. Fool's Honor's cover was one we'd been staring at for months, wishing we had a reason to buy it. It's our longest Black and Gold book. Sharper Than Thorns is the only book in this collection where someone other than Lara helped run it (@beka.gremikova). It has some of our darkest stories, oddly enough. Wither and Bloom had a totally different cover for a bit, but we had to change it due to some deadline issues. Despite being romance, there's still plenty of fantasy and chaos. Though We Bleed submissions might have been the hardest to weed through. Lara and I (Anne) drove to Georgia and read the submissions during the drive, spent several days in a cabin deciding which ones to accept, and drafting our own stories for this book. Would you rather only be able to tell lies or the truth? AOTD: Probably truth, though it might mean I wouldn’t have any friends! 🙈 FOOL’S HONOR is a short story anthology full of lies, tricks, twists, and fools. It made me laugh, grimace, and groan in all the best ways! The first third or so follows stories of famous characters like Loki, Peter Pan, Rumpelstiltskin, and others. Most of the characters are antiheroes who don’t always have others’ best interests at heart, but they usually get what the deserve at the end. Wahaha! These stories each deserve their own star rating, but as that would take forever, I give the book as a whole ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. It’s late, but I’m in the mood to post about Fool’s Honor and talk about my short story writing. I don’t consider myself a short story writer. When I sit to write, I plan out longer pieces of work. Short stories only cross my mind when I’m dealing with anthologies. Yet…the majority of my career so far has been anthologies, and I’ve loved every bit of it. Between poetry and short stories, I’m thriving in a creative space where I can do whatever I want. It’s so much fun. Anyways, check out the many anthologies I’m in. Day one of this week's #weeklyauthorgoals update! Yesterday was the first day of this week's challenges. I actually just got a cold and haven't been feeling well so I spent most of yesterday just relaxing, hoping to get rid of this thing sooner rather than later. I did listen to the first few chapters of the book I'm editing if that counts for anything. But because of that, my new goal is to write 2.7K a day, and edit 2.8k of my client edits every day this week. How did yesterday go for you and what are you aiming to get done today? --- I think I might start doing these update posts at the end of the night instead of the next morning just so the day number matches up better. Wow, I haven’t posted in *checks calendar* a LONG time! With school starting again and all the new people here, I figured it’s time for another introduction post. Hi! My name is Maseeha Seedat. I’m a 17-year-old hijabi living in the UAE, born and raised in sunny South Africa. In 10 days I will be a high school senior and after that, who knows where I’ll end up. Not sure where this theme is going or how long it will be around, but I’m resorting to something familiar while I work on thinking of new concepts. I’m also doing some self promotion today because I don’t promote my anthologies enough! Here I’ve got Fool’s Honor and Where Giants Fall. I have the people tagged who put these together. Highly recommend following them. I have two of my favourite published stories in these collections. In Fool’s Honor, I have Hearts of Flesh. It follows a boy in a war-torn village who makes a mistake and has to deal with the consequences of it. Things take quite a turn of events as he realizes the world doesn’t work the way he thinks it does. The reveals in this one are 👌 chefs kiss In Where Giants Fall I have A Different Kind of Falling. This story is about a man who rescues children from dark creatures in the jungle. He gets caught and has to escape. It’s quite a thrill and I’ve received some pretty cool compliments from people for it. So please consider picking these up! My copies of Fool's Honor arrived! And I'm... Still a little amazed that my story is printed in this. Like, this book has something I wrote in it. Something I created. And that's a beautiful thought. At the same time, I'm finding it hard to fully appreciate this moment. Maybe it's because the time between writing the short story and folding a final copy of the anthology in my hands has been long. Maybe it's because my mind wants to sabotage this moment with that little word, "just." or maybe it's because I'm busy working on another story, so this one isn't as important in my mind at this time. But these moments of small victories are important and should not be brushed aside. Nothing is too small to celebrate. So I'm going to celebrate this. I'm going to hold the book, read the stories by all the amazing authors, and just enjoy the feeling of seeing my name in print. When I read the submission guidelines for FOOL’S HONOR, my mind immediately went to the only trickster character I’ve ever written. I’ve known the characters in “Epithet” since I was a teen, and it was delightful to bring them out again for this story. One my favorite aspects of the “Shifting Sands” world is the magic system. Because not only is it totally SICK (yes, I’m using dated terminology, sue me), but it’s also plausibly historically “accurate.” ⁣ ⁣ Isis was the Great Mother of the Egyptian religious beliefs, goddess over healing, fertility, and magic. She is often pictured as a winged goddess, the bringer of fresh air and wind, and she is the wife of Osiris. ⁣ ⁣ In legend, Osiris’ brother (Seth) became jealous of him, murdering and dismembering him. He cast the pieces of his brother’s body out into the desert sands so that they could never be put back together. Isis is remembered in legend as Osiris’ salvation. She spent years of her life dedicated to searching the ends of the desert to find each missing piece of her husband, and upon seeing her love and desperation to heal her husband, the other gods aided her in returning Osiris to life. ⁣ ⁣ There is a symbol connected with Isis because of this—Tyet—or the “Knot of Life.” (Similar to an ankh amulet and generally pictured in jasper, carnelian, or other “life giving” colors.) In Egyptian legend the tyet appears in sets of three, connected closely to Isis and carried on her belt. Similar tokens were often used in burial tombs or given between lovers as protective charms to place Isis’ protection over the intended. ⁣ ⁣ In “Shifting Sands,” the magic system draws on the idea of Isis’ “Knot of Life,” the idea that this goddess of the desert brings all things together and makes them whole again. Was Ancient Egypt the only inspiration for “Shifting Sands”?⁣ ⁣ No. ⁣ ⁣ When I set out to write “Shifting Sands,” the original plan was to do a strict retelling of an Irish folktale from the 8thcentury entitled, “The Wooing of Etan.” ⁣ ⁣ There are multiple different version of this tale, but in the one I chose, Etan is a young woman of great beauty who draws the eyes and hearts of two men—one a fae lord, the other a human king. ⁣ ⁣ In this story, Etan is set to marry the human king, but the fae lord intends to woo her to marry him. And so, as trickster sorts often do, he tricks Etan and tells her that she has entered his magic forest and now she cannot leave without besting him. He tells her that he will let her husband come for her, but that he must choose between several identical “figments” of her that the fae lord has created. And if the king chooses correctly, she may leave with him. If not, Etan will remain beside the fae lord forever, as his lover. ⁣ ⁣ In short, Etan agrees and ends up bound to the fae lord throughout eternity. ⁣ ⁣ The ending for “Shifting Sands” would have played out much the same. With Set forcing Asim to choose between figments of his wife created by the desert sands, keeping Hehet locked within the oasis forever—in the form of a brilliant blue butterfly. (Shifty bastard, amiright?) ⁣ ⁣ However, as I began to write the story, I realized that the intended plot line no longer “fit” the characters. Hehet was not a love struck girl—rather she was a strong queen who loved her husband and wished to honor him and help her people. And Set…well, he wasn’t villainous. He was a man who missed his brother, who spent years alone in the desert longing for his home. ⁣ ⁣ And somehow, the villains, the tricksters, became the very thing that was all around them—the spirits of the desert sand. ⁣ ⁣ Want to know more about what happens to the characters in “Shifting Sands”? Do you have one of those friends or family members who could probably legitimately get away with murder because they’re just that unbelievably charming? ⁣ ⁣ That’s Set. ⁣ ⁣ And that’s the ironic thing about this story, I think. That the child who grew up a trickster, is ultimately the one who was tricked. The one who made playful victims of everyone else, became the one who antagonized others in the pain of his own victimization. A tricky balance to say the least.⁣ ⁣ And yet, even in that, there are so many things that I admire about Set. He’s not a good man, really. I couldn’t say that. But he tries to be. ⁣ ⁣ What really interests me about Set is his relationship and interactions with Asim. There are so many layers and pain and strife between them—both over the negative choices they’ve made and over the injustices laid on their shoulders, by life and each other.⁣ ⁣ So many times, Asim compares his own blood to a dog or a slave, and yet, through all the condemnation he faces, Set only speaks of his brother as Pharaoh, as god, and as brother. ⁣ ⁣ Set has such hope and desire in him for his brother’s affection, love, and respect. Yet he’s given up on receiving it. Because—and that seems to be the crux of the matter in all of his relationships—he feels unworthy. And Set has not learned the lesson his brother has. ⁣ ⁣ Worthiness is not something we achieve, it is a gift we are given and a mantle we choose. ⁣ ⁣ Fun Facts: ⁣ ⁣ 1) The game that Set plays with Hehet in the climax of the story is based on an actual Egyptian boardgame called Senet. ⁣ ⁣ 2) Set and Asim used to enjoy hunting together, and Set kept many hawks and dogs. Definitely an animal person. He could never stand being alone. ⁣ ⁣ 3) Despite being very outgoing in most regards, Set can actually be very shy and is very much a people pleaser. His love language is 100% words of affirmation.⁣ ⁣ Want to play a game with Set? As a friend of mine said recently, “If he didn’t already have so many wives—and also Hehet—I would marry Asim.” ⁣ ⁣ The name Asim means guardian, protector—and he is every bit that. Not just for the woman he loves, but also for his kingdom. ⁣ ⁣ Something I love most about him is the struggle in him. The struggle to feel worthy of his brother’s throne, the struggle to feel worthy of his wife’s love. But unlike his brother, Asim made the right choices. When his brother went astray, searching for worthiness in the depths of the desert and the magic he could find there, Asim claimed himself worthy because Hehet said he was. ⁣ ⁣ He believed in the love she offered him and held to that core of himself as guardian and protector of his land—even in the face of war, famine, drought, disaster, or his brother’s antagonistic games. ⁣ ⁣ Asim is a man of tender strength and tenacity, wreathed in endurance and faithfulness. And more than anything, I love him for how he loves his wife.⁣ ⁣ Fun Facts: ⁣ ⁣ 1) In the original ending, Set presented Asim with several “figments” of his wife to choose from, while Butterfly Heset was pinned by her wings to his tunic. The last words exchanged between the brothers were along the lines of: “You’ve a lovely broach.” “Thank you, it is close to my heart.” (Needless to say, the final version of Asim is not that dense or superficial.)⁣ ⁣ 2) He’s a bit of a magpie in spirit and has an eye for shiny things. ⁣ ⁣ 3) Asim prefers everything just so and he gets Stressed TM when it’s not—he really should be used to this by now after growing up with Hehet and Set, right? ⁣ ⁣ Want to play a game with Asim? I chose the name Hehet because it meant “immeasurable.” At the time, I had no idea how intrinsic that name would become to her as a character. ⁣ ⁣ Hehet is a character I love because she shows characteristics important to me—dedication and loyalty. ⁣ ⁣ She’s a woman who deeply loves her husband, and a woman who is dedicated to her people. She would put anything aside to bring them peace and prosperity. She shows herself to be a pillar of strength, integrity, and tenderness while still making hard decisions. She does not fear her emotions, nor fight against her place in the world. For me, she shows what a “strong” fictional woman should be. Equal parts chaos, control, wisdom, and gentleness. ⁣ ⁣ And even though things rarely go her way, she never loses sight of what is important to her—the prosperity of her people, and her “sun.” ⁣ ⁣ Fun Facts: ⁣ ⁣ 1) In the original draft, Hehet was to turn into a butterfly, but now the imagery exists as a bond between herself, Asim, and Set.⁣ ⁣ 2) Subtle parallels exist between Hehet and Isis. Isis is the goddess of healing, fertility, and magic. Here’s a fun fact about me that most of you don’t know. When I was a young girl, before I committed to wanting to be an author, I had a fascination with ancient history and archeology. I was obsessed with the idea that I could be like Indiana Jones and discover amazing stories, histories, treasures, and civilizations. ⁣ ⁣ While, over time, I realized I was FAR too clumsy (and petrified of spiders) to be an archeologist, that did not extinguish my love for ancient cultures at all. In fact, if nothing else, it enflamed my interest. For if I could not go and discover myself, then I was damn sure going to learn everything that everyone else discovered in my place. ⁣ ⁣ I cannot tell you how many books, articles, and documents I’ve read on ancient cultures (both fiction and non-fiction), simply for my love of the cultural anthropology and customs of these fascinating peoples. ⁣ ⁣ And chief among them—my first love—the people of Ancient Egypt. ⁣ ⁣ And when Anne approached me about participating in “Fool’s Honor,” I had one immediate thought—Desert Fantasy. Quickly followed by the realization that I could FINALLY write a story based in Ancient Egypt. ⁣ ⁣ By the time I sat down to write, I was giddy with the realization. And by the end of the week, I no only had a desert themed fantasy in Ancient Egypt, but I also had a pretty sick and plausibly historically accurate magic system.
