I have been thinking so much about primordial mothers, the ocean, the ocean as a graveyard, the ocean as refuge, and the ocean as a force not to be messed with. Tsedaye’s work was so deeply moving on all levels! My favorite moment was the refractions on the ceiling while her baby was making it known that that’s their mama! #artmamasforlife ✨🤩🌊✨ The fact that she was able to do this piece in Venice under our eyes as collective witnesses was so haunting and powerful. The conference created so much space for the dead, grieving, the unknown, the unnamed and the pain of injustice. Today is the birthday of the recently deceased Dr. Robert Farris Thompson. Right Sharing honors his legacy. As noted in an obituary by Tessa Solomon in ARTnews: Thompson authored several books, including the Black Gods and Kings, a close study of the art history of the Yoruba people of Nigeria in 1971; Aesthetic of the Cool: Afro-Atlantic Art and Music in 2011; and Flash of the Spirit, a dive into African influence in the New World praised upon its publication in 1983 for doing for “art history what the dunk shot did for basketball.” He was also working on a comprehensive history of mambo. Thompson considered himself foremost a respectful observer and relished in disposing with racist notions of “primitivism.” As he said in the story in Rolling Stone, “Those people stand like giants in teaching us how to live. There is a moral voice imbedded in the Afro-Atlantic aesthetic that the West can’t grasp. They don’t see the monuments, just barefoot philosophy coming from village elders. But the monument is a grand reconciling art form that tries to morally reconstruct a person without humiliating him.” He continued: “These are the canons of the cool: There is no crisis that cannot be weighed and solved; nothing can be achieved through hysteria or cowardice; you must wear and show off your ability to achieve social reconciliation. I use to visit Dr. Thompson periodically at Yale when I was writing my dissertation. We would have lunch together in the school cafetería and he would drop jewels of wisdom as he had me question myself in the work that I was researching. He told me that I was always going to come back to quilting.......and he was so right. Robert Farris Thompson has passed to the next realm. How the gift of African understanding, soul and thought manifested in this young white man from Texas, I don’t know, but the world is so much better for his decades of writing and teaching. “Flash of the Spirit” initially published in 1984, will forever be a seminal text on African philosophy and art, and his contributions to critical understanding of Afro-Atlantic art and the threads of African culture that run through our modern world can’t be overstated. Oddly enough, I hadn’t been able to locate our copy for a while now, so just last night, perhaps as he transitioned, I ordered another one. We lost another giant: Robert Farris Thompson joined the ancestors, leaving us a huge legacy! His work shaped many scholars and artists and anyone in the African Diaspora sphere. His book Flash of the Spirit was a huge eye opener for me and a must read for my students and really everyone. I was introduced to him by another giant in the field Daniel Dawson and filmmaker @warringtonhudlin , An Inspiring speaker, Robert Farris Thompson was a professor who embraced those of us who have personal and embodied knowledge who studied over a life time and trusting our work. There are not many PhD s who truly do in the hierarchy of academia. Over the years I have been to his lectures, went to Yale to have lunch with him and went to hear him speak whenever I could! Robert Farris Thompson, RIP RFT 1932 -2021. A gateway person for many into an often misunderstood and misheard conversation. He connected dots where many didn’t see them before. I always left his class a little more open to my own history, feeling less confused about my story. He had a gift at mingling the historical with the personal. Once I had the opportunity to speak with Thompson’s Professor, Sidney Mintz. Professor Mintz said Robert didn’t talk about politics, he just dealt with music and dancing. As I get older I realize how wrong Mintz was in that reductive statement. So many politics are held in music and dance especially within in the people of the Black Atlantic.
