As we’re nearing the end of Colon Cancer awareness month, I feel the need to share some of my story in hopes that it motivates others to be vigilant with their own health. I’m not usually so public with this, but knowledge is what will help others I hope. This photo is in the waiting room at my first visit to my surgeon after being diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2022. At this point I didn’t know what stage the cancer was, how sick I was or what I would need other than the first step being surgery. It was a scary time for me and my family. The short story of this journey, which is still a daily consideration for me, is that I was a lucky one. I had surgery to remove the cancer. And, after a few months of recovery and healing I was told I didn’t need the chemo we thought I’d need. Diligent follow-ups for a long time to come, but I was cancer-free. The point of my post today is tell you that the only reason my cancer was found was because I demanded answers to symptoms that had been deemed “normal for women” who had had children. After a while that didn’t sit well with me and I advocated for more testing. 5 months after demanding more testing, a colonoscopy determined I had cancer. Follow your gut, don’t assume because you’re a certain age, gender, nationality etc. that you’re safe from cancers that are typical for “others”. Had I left this alone, I’m not sure where I’d be today. Screening is crucial. Prevention is crucial. And advocating for yourself and your loved ones is crucial. When I launched Female Health & Fertility magazine in June ‘23 I was motivated to support women with reproductive & menopause challenges following my own experiences with PCOS, hypothyroidism, uterine hyperplasia, IVF, and miscarriage. I never imagined I would be diagnosed with womb cancer just four months later after having uterine polyps (growths) removed. I also never imagined that, following a multidisciplinary panel’s advice, I would be preparing for a full hysterectomy to prevent the cancer from spreading. After a course of progesterone medication, I had my womb, cervix and fallopian tubes removed on 23rd Nov ‘23. Despite many years of trying for a baby, going ahead with a hysterectomy at 34 years old was an easy decision. It’s amazing how, when faced with a situation like this, every other dream or concern you’ve had feels temporarily insignificant. I went into survival mode. On 20th Dec I got the amazing news that the cancer is gone and I do not need further treatment. I will never be pregnant and I will never give birth. The pain is raw but I am so happy and thankful that I have my future ahead of me. Thank you so much to my amazing husband, my wonderful family and my special friends for their support. The hugest thank you goes to my consultant Mr Louis and to all the nurses and staff at Luton & Dunstable Hospital. Thank you also to my magazine team and contributors who have helped keep the publication going while I focused on my health. My biggest learning from this health scare is to make the most of what you have as we never know what is around the corner. October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Its the most common cancer in the UK. It’s important to be breast aware no matter your age or gender. Be open to have the conversation with friends and family. You could be the one who sparks the first step to one checking their breasts. Why checking your breasts and having the Breast Checks can help. 💗 The current evidence suggests that breast screening reduces the number of deaths from breast cancer by about 1,300 a year in the UK. 💗 Early detection means finding and diagnosing a disease earlier than if you'd waited for symptoms to start. 💗 Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and less likely to have spread outside the breast. Be breast aware and talk to one another.
