It's World Baking Day! So we are sharing a recipe found in an 1878 newspaper. Do you have a vintage recipe to share? In 1870, women used various methods to bake cakes without ovens, especially in settings where ovens were not available or were too expensive. Here are some common techniques they might have employed: Open Fire: Many households had open hearths or fireplaces where cooking could be done. Women would use a cast iron skillet or a Dutch oven placed directly over the fire to bake cakes. They would regulate the temperature by moving the skillet closer or further away from the flames. Wood-Burning Stove: While not as common as open fires, some households had wood-burning stoves. Women would bake cakes in these stoves by placing them inside cast iron or tin baking pans and then placing the pans inside the stove. Temperature regulation could be tricky and required experience. Dutch Ovens: Dutch ovens were versatile cooking vessels used both on open fires and in conventional ovens. Women would place cake batter inside a Dutch oven, cover it with a lid, and then place hot coals on top of the lid and underneath the oven to create an oven-like environment. Brick Oven: In some communities, communal brick ovens were available for use. Women would prepare their cake batter at home and then bring it to the communal oven for baking. These ovens retained heat well and provided a consistent baking environment. Ash Cakes: In situations where even the above methods were not available, women might resort to simpler cakes like ash cakes. These were made by wrapping dough around a stick and roasting it over an open fire or hot coals. While not exactly like the cakes we think of today, they provided a form of baked treat with minimal resources. These methods required skill and experience to regulate temperature and ensure even baking. Lawrence Wright’s recollections of working in Saudi were fascinating in ‘The Terror Years’, and I was similarly taken with Hollie S. McKay when she was interviewed by Geraint Jones on the Veteran State of Mind podcast. I was put off trying to be a journalist in one single careers session at school, with a newspaper writer making the job sound vile. Many spend a lot of time away from home, in dangerous places, with no emergency beacon ready to summon the rest of the Air Force to sweep up the high value aircrew mate. I bet it’s hard, scary work, that I wouldn’t actually be able to do even if I had to. Genuinely impressive and inspiring in many cases. 📕ARC Review!📕 Last summer, Will Dean blew my mind with “The Last One”, so I was very excited to also get this ARC. Instead of being trapped on a cruise ship, in this book we have people locked in a hyperbaric chamber. These six people have been working deep in the North Sea, and now will need a few days to slowly ascend to the surface. They will eat, shower, sleep and work in very close quarters, but the money is worth the risk of claustrophobia and the potential for injury.🌊 Then, one of them ends up dead. The group doesn’t know how a healthy man can just die, seemingly for no reason, but they must continue on. They get his body into a lifeboat…and then there were five. As the days go on, they are dropping like flies until there are only two of them left. They ran out of body bags, so the remaining two are stuck in this tiny vessel with their friends decomposing in the hot, helium-filled atmosphere of the chamber. Tensions rise as the two each believe that the other is a murderer.☠️ I liked “The Last One” better, but this was still a great book that teaches the reader about this career and the risks that go with it. The characters were written well, the murder mystery was done well, and the whole thing was very suspenseful. Sorting calves can be smooth, dangerous, intense, and even entertaining at times. It's a process where all the cattle that were gathered from a certain pasture and separated and either put back to pasture, loaded onto a truck for the sale, or penned to be doctored, fed out or anything else requiring individual attention. In this instance, Trey and Spence pushed the cows into the lane, Trey manned the cattle, and Spence manned the gates. Neither a job you feel lucky to get. Trey tries his best to send one cow at time, yelling steer or heifer as it charges by. Most of the time this process goes smoothly. However, sometimes multiple cows charge by leaving Trey left to get out of the way and Spence left to quickly pick which pen to stick them in. Or a mean cow, that causes "necessary" vulgarities to spew out, charges one man or the other or sometimes both. Sometimes it works out, sometimes a steer has to be separated from the heifer pen later, and sometimes everybody has to jump the fence to save himself from the before mentioned profanity cow. Iron was central to the livelihood of John Potts, and it was central to the lives of his workers. From the surface mining of iron ore to hammering out imperfections on the finished products and every step in between, iron saturated the everyday lives of ironworkers. What separates the two types of iron – cast and wrought– are additional processes that refine cast iron into a denser product with fewer impurities. Iron furnaces such as Warwick, Coalbrookdale, and Joanna Furnace would crank out a raw, cast-iron product in the form of a “pigg.” So named from the trough structure of the molds where the liquid metal would be poured, a pigg was purely cast iron. From the furnace, these piggs would be sent to various forges in the region to be reheated and hammered down into wrought iron goods such as “S” hooks, cookware, or hardware. Currently on display in our “Free Black Ironworkers of Mount Joy Forge” exhibit is a small piece of an original Potts iron pigg. Stamped with the markings, “TP 1740” this pigg was produced at Coalbrookdale Furnace under Thomas Potts (John’s father) and despite it weighing more than 30 pounds, it’s ultimately only a small part of what would have been an extremely large object. The Diderot engraving above shows how large a whole iron pigg would have been as well as its size compared to the average worker. The free Black ironworkers employed at Mt. Joy Forge would have handled an object this large and this heavy regularly. Forge work was a dangerous job for many reasons, not the least of which was the possibility of injury resulting from the moving of heavy items.
