On May 7th, TANI had the honour of giving a talk on "Building Healthy Family Relationships and Family Violence Prevention" to 30 seniors at the Epsom Chinese Association. It was a truly impactful session, delving into important topics close to our hearts. While issues on family harm are very sensitive, the seniors were brave enough to face the issues in our communities, and some shared stories with the group which enhanced their understanding of the importance of developing violence-free relationships. We also explored strategies for fostering positive family dynamics and discussed ways to prevent and respond to family violence. Engaging with the seniors was inspiring, and their eagerness to learn and contribute to a healthier, safer environment was truly commendable. Let's continue to spread awareness and support each other in building stronger, healthier families and communities. In today’s Herald Sun newspaper, Protective Group Chief Operating Officer Tristan Wilson and CEO Stephen talk to Aneeka Simonis about our daily fight with Technology Abuse. Every week our team see the prevalence and disturbing increase in the use of Technology Abuse in Domestic and Family violence situations. While technology has many advantages, it can also be used as a tool for abuse. Some family violence perpetrators go to great lengths to locate, stalk and control their partners and families Perpetrators have long used tech to spy on victims, but the advancement of technology has given them greater opportunities than ever before. It’s much easier to get access to a partner’s phone to alter privacy settings, obtain passwords, or install tracking software. Cheap and easy surveillance such as Apple Airtags and Hidden Camera’s allow victims to be tracked and watched at all times. A simple Google search can reveal 100's of Mobile Apps that a perpetrator can download to a victim’s phone to track their every move, and websites to purchase devices for illegal surveillance and harassment- something we find daily when searching cars and mobile devices. Harley is one of our younger victims/survivors of family violence. His mother passed away, and he lives away from his father. Couch-surfing and living way below the poverty line, Willow the cat is his one thread of stability. Like many pets, Willow is also a form of therapy for her human: providing comfort, and teaching care and resilience. “She has saved me, and kept me from throwing my life away. She has taught me what responsibility of another living thing looks like.” But early one morning, this fluffy black cat was attacked by a dog, fracturing her leg. Willow was taken to Traralgon Vet. Without money for the operation or any mode of transportation, owner Harley had to leave his best friend at the vet for 3 days. Harley was, understandably, beside himself. Harley’s support worker contacted Pet Medical Crisis, who secured an appointment for surgery at the amazing Old Sale Road Vet but because Harley couldn’t arrange transport, we teamed up with his support worker to arrange the logistics. And with the support of the incredible folks at @petbarn we could also fund Willow’s surgery. Willow’s broken leg was expertly amputated, which was her only chance of survival. But don’t worry!
