📣*Save this post!* As you may be aware, Instagram is now limiting the visibility of “political” posts and accounts you don’t follow. It became the default setting for everyone’s account about two weeks ago. You may have seen posts explaining how to change this default setting on your account. *(If you haven’t - check out Slide 5!)* What I’ve seen less of is an explanation of how to find out whether your posts are being hidden from non-followers *(Slide 6!!)*. The truth is - no one knows yet how far-reaching the effects of these changes are likely to be. The current definition of “political” is pretty vague and Meta has suggested it will evolve over time. In the meantime, should you be toning down the “politics” of your Instagram content from now on? My answer is a resounding “no”! If you’re a purpose-led brand, trying to support climate action or social justice, this is a crucial part of your brand’s identity and people should hear about it. More importantly, should ANY of us really feel like we can’t engage in respectful and appropriate political debate online? What this does mean is everyone should keep an eye on this change and its practical implications. It’s also yet another reason why you can’t pour all your marketing eggs into the Instagram basket. To safeguard your brand you need to also tackle SEO, nurture other social media channels to complement Instagram and also consider marketing strategies like email marketing. And one final thing - I would looove you to take a second to check whether the visibility of your account, or any of your posts, have been limited!! When I see a sales page that I love, I will diagram it -- I'll look at the structure, the 'job' of each paragraph, what makes it work, what gives me hesitation or pause -- and then I turn that into a template I can use later. Something I’ve been reflecting on lately... As a social worker, I spent a lot of time delving deeply into the nuances of language, and the way that our words and our systems can either empower us, or perpetuate power dynamics and ingrained beliefs that are damaging. These nuances are just as important in the business world. As business owners we communicate everyday with a diverse community of humans. The words we use and how we structure our communication can either support folks to make informed choices, or perpetuate cycles of shame and fear. That’s why I’m passionate about taking a human-centred and ethical approach to writing copy for clients, and within my business. Because, how we use words matters. We don’t need to trick, manipulate or overcome all objections to find connection. We can show up with honesty, empathy, and our own splash of personality. We can communicate in a way that honours each person we meet as the expert of their own lived experience. This is an evolving practise - we’re all on a learning journey. The biggest struggle I had when writing my About page was deciding WHICH parts of myself to include -- because there are A.LOT. Not everyone has this issue, but if you overly identify with Oprah's theme song "I'm Every Woman" then this tip might help: Curate what you include on your About page by what parts of your story best SERVE your ideal clients. What can they relate to? What would they identify with? What parts of your story would they see themselves in? What lessons did you learn that they're on the path to learning too? 1-Waiting for the PERFECT title/name for your brand/website url or service offering. You can spend days, weeks, months, YEARS trying to find just the right name, but instead of ensuring your success, this is the slow road to failure. I've seen promising businesses never get off the ground because the owner HAD to have the perfect name (One of them named it after her boyfriend and had to re-brand when they broke up!). Don't aim for perfect. Aim for clear. Clear will serve you every time. 2-Second-guessing what you write in your content because you're worried about saying the wrong thing. This means you don't publish as fast (or at all), which means nobody knows you exist. This can come from a deep-rooted fear of being seen and judged. But from a business perspective, imperfect action is ALWAYS better than perfect inaction. Just hit publish. Typos and all. 3-The Need to Find a Perfect Niche before you can do ANYTHING else! You don't need to find a perfect niche - you just need to make a decision on a niche you want to try for now. Think of your business as an experiment, and this is your hypothesis you get to test. Then you can iterate and try something else if it doesn't work. But at least you've taken action and gathered data. If you struggle with perfectionism in your business, especially around these areas, I highly recommend joining Uncage Your Business @theuncagedlife in 2024.
