Eine der bedeutendsten Stätten der Geschichte und Architektur - und damit ein Höhepunkt der Exkursion des Instituts für Baugeschichte an der TU Braunschweig @ib_tubs Eine Akropolis war im alten Griechenland die "Hohe Stadt" - eine Stadtburg, die in frügeschichtlicher Zeit auch als Fluchtburg umgebender Siedlungen diente. Im Laufe der Zeit wurden diese Orte zu religiösen Zentren und ritueller Handlungen. Das größte und bekanntestes Beispiel einer Akropolis ist diejenige in Athen - das Wahrzeichen Griechenlands. Die wichtigsten Baudenkmäler stammen sämtlich aus der Epoche der großen Blütezeit des Stadtstaats im mittleren 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr.: Der Torbau - das Propyläen, der Parthenon und das Erechtheion. Für diese Baudenkmäler kann geradezu universelle Bedeutung geltend gemacht werden. The caryatids of the Erechtheion in Athens. I have been wanting to paint these for a while but was unsure which colours to use. After putting it to a vote in my stories the most popular opinion was that they should be against a sky background. I’m quite happy with how the sky came out but have questioned my choice to strip the colours of the sculptures back to grey scale, I think I will probably come back these in the future and stick to the natural colours of the pantelic marble which is beautiful. The #Erechtheion has two porches or porticos, on its north and south sides. The roof of the north porch is supported by six ionic columns, while an opening in the floor of the building shows a mark that the Athenians claimed was made by Poseidon striking the rock with his trident. The south porch is the better known of the two. In the place of columns, six sculpted Korai, the #Caryatids, supported the roof. Although the name of their creator is unknown, it is thought that they are from the workshop of Alkamenes, a pupil of Pheidias. Many interpretations have been offered for the Caryatids. The most convincing of these contend that they comprise the above-ground monument for the tomb of Kekrops, which was located directly beneath. These were the choephoroi (libation bearers), who were rendering tribute to the dead king, with phialai (shallow libation bowls) held in their hands, as we know from ancient reproductions. The substitution of sculpted women for columns was not altogether rare in Greek architecture of the archaic period (7th—5th century BC). In an inscription on the temple itself, the statues of the Erechtheion were simply called Korai (maidens). The name "Caryatids" was given in later years because of their association with the young women of Karyai in Laconia, who used to perform a devotional dance in honor of the goddess Artemis. Five statues of the Caryatids are located today in the Museum of the Acropolis, of which one was smashed by a Turkish cannonball, while the sixth is in the British Museum.
