On Monday, we had the pleasure to host Commissioner Gwen Myers and Cameron Pennant, Director of Government Relations for Hillsborough County at our Catalyst group meeting. During this meeting, we discussed diplomacy, bipartisanship and the Hillsborough County Community Investment Tax (CIT.) Did you know? 💡The CIT has existed for 28 years and has generated $2.3 billion for the County. 💡Raymond James Stadium and Amalie Arena are County facilities created by the CIT. 💡The CIT has helped fund 757 capital improvement projects. The CIT will be on the ballot for renewal this November! Top draw Soca and Calypso sounds here from Lord Melody and his 1979 album Sugar Jam, released on Eddymel Records. Not an expensive record this but can be tricky to find in good condition, we found a lovely one at @rookrecords! Melody was a Trinidadian calypsonian singer and composer, his career spanned over forty years, from the beginnings of calypso music to his embrace of the more dance oriented Soca style by the late 1970s. He began recording in the mid to late 1940s, and continued up until 1985, three years before his death. He is regarded as one of the most popular calypsonians behind Mighty Sparrow and Lord Kitchener. He had a friendly rivalry with Sparrow. Lord Melody began working with Harry Belafonte in the late 1950s. Belafonte recorded a number of Melody’s songs, including some that Melody did not end up recording himself. He spent much of the 1960s working with Belafonte and did not release any albums between 1963 and 1972, although did release several singles and compilation tracks. His return to albums with 1972’s Lord Melody - Mas Is Devil Power was notably more dance-oriented, he had made a stylistic shift to the more dance oriented Soca style by the late 70s. He kept recording in this style until the mid 1980s. Sunday sounds from one of the best to have ever sat at the controls, @madprofessorariwa! Reissued last year on @melodiesint. Legendary dub head Mad Professor managed to turn his mixing desk into an instrument in its own right. He coded all manner of heady and futurist sounds of it it by twisting nobs and playing with faders in a way no one had before and few have managed to recreate ever since. He has turned his hand to reworking countless classic albums as well as turning out his own heart works, not least this album that was originally released in 1984. Ariwa Sounds (The Early Sessions) captures his work with artists like Errol Sly, Rock A Way & Sister Audrey and Sergeant Pepper, all of who he left with his magic dub touch. For anyone that’s been to an ELTB night over the last year or so might recognise this one, Rafael Cortijo’s Elena Elena, released on the Puerto Rican label Tierrazo in 1980. Huge salsa vibes on this one, I love the intro and how slides into such a groove that it then holds down throughout the song, that paired with big vocal hooks and even an even bigger horn section makes this an absolute dance floor winner, it never fails to go down well. It’s not an expensive record but it doesn’t seem to pop up that often, we luckily stumbled across one by chance. Some get up and go sounds to kick start your Monday! Parisian crew @discomatinrecords are pulling no punches here, always showing off with their ability to reissue the rarities that others can’t. Testament to this ability is this two-sided 12” version of Marche Noir’s ‘Lot’Vie / Y’a Du Blues’, with the recordings getting remastered from the original tapes. Both tracks are romantic disco and funk forays with West Indian influences, and champion Max Marolany’s keyboard chops in a late 70s style near-exclusive to the artist. Huge dance floor hitter here! @mello_rob’s latest offering via his No Ears imprint, Electric Dreams / Ohh La La, released last year and there’s a few left knocking around so be quick if this one’s you. We’ve been hammering it recently with many ID requests from the dancers. Rob Mello really needs no introduction, but you’re getting one anyway. Rob has been instrumental in putting UK House music on the map since the early 90’s. Numerous legendary projects and collaborations, including the enormous Disco Elements series with Zaki Dee, Reel Houze & the exceptional, way-ahead-of-their-time psychedelic Disco / House jams via Sensory Productions, not forgetting his later, superb work for Classic. Oh and did we forget Black Science Orchestra? Yeah, he was there too. Rob revives his No Ears moniker for a duo of perfectly crafted dancefloor delights. Pieced together with diligence and more than a little trademark Mello funk, this is up there with his best work. Big TIP!

Released on Fania Records back in 2007. Big thanks to @daddydarkrdc for playing it at Giant Steps and putting me onto this record, always goes down a treat! Big 45 here you may have missed from last year, released on @tradviberecords, French music production duo @djmoar & The Badlibs reinterpretation of J Dillas ‘Bossa Nova Rico Suave’. The track is a clean nuevo-bossa-nova exercise, underlaid by a pumping backbeat making it equally as worthy of an eclectic hip-hop or downtempo mix. The original is so short that it’s really nice to have a version with a few extra minutes on it. Plus the King Most remix on the flip side is just as neat, a little faster and drawing on samba while pinning down a bustlingly percussive groove. TIP!

It’s our first show back on @radioalhara this morning and we will be kicking it off with this little number, Waitin’ by Zenit. Out to @editionhawara for the reissue and see you at 10.00 GMT for the show! Zenit is a jazz ensemble from Krems in Lower Austria, founded in 1976 by Hannes Treiber and Willi Langer. Their music was celebrated locally, but to reduce them to their local fame would be misleading: After all, their first two LPs, Stimmungswechsel (Change of Moods) and Früchte (Fruits), quickly gained them a much wider audience of discerning listeners. Arguably, however, Zenit’s third and final LP Straight Ahead is the most special of their records. It initially came out in 1986 on the producers label Spray Records, and is today one of the hardest-to-find Austrian jazz records. Its centrepiece is the infectious slow-motion disco piece “Waiting,” with vocals by American jazz singer Linda Sharrock. Effortlessly bringing together pop, soul and new age vibes, this is a record that is as unique as it is difficult to date. Does it sound like from the 80s? We’re not sure. To our minds at least, it could also be from the future.

Packing records for tomorrows @brilliant_cnrs session and one that’s been doing damage recently is this killer cover of Maxx Traxx’s Chicago boogie classic, Don’t Touch It by @anothertaste_. The band completely reimagine the track by the upping the tempo and adding their signature flair, big tip. This collaborate release was put out at the end of last year by @starcreaturevibes, @spacegrapesrecords and @thenumerogroup and has the original on one side and the cover on the flip. Copies flew and are likely all gone now but we have a sneaky suspicion the cover will be on Another Tastes debut album due out some point this year. Here’s something to warm you right up on this very cold January afternoon, Nelson’s irresistible jam Gimme Love, taken from his album Family, released on B’s Records in 1982. Like many calypsonians from Tobago, Lord Nelson (born Robert Nelson) had to seek his fame and fortune in America. And he found it — although not in the U.S., but back home, where he remains one of the acknowledged stars of soca, the mix of soul and calypso that has been the island’s musical mainstay since the mid-‘70s. Born and raised in Tobago, Nelson left his homeland after graduating high school, hoping for a better life in Brooklyn. However, he’d hardly had a chance to unpack before he was drafted and sent off with the U.S. forces to Korea, which was where he first showed his talents as a singer and comedian, performing in Army shows. Later, back on American shores, he began singing with West Indian steel bands in Brooklyn, mostly covering calypso hits in his unique fashion, which went over strongly with the Caribbean community. Still, he never considered writing his own material until he became friendly with another calypsonian, Mighty Duke, who mentored him. Nelson’s own style took from calypso, but also from the American music he heard every day, adding more than an ounce of funk to the proceedings on songs like “La La” and “King Liar,” which became Caribbean hits. While not the first to make soca music, he found a great deal of popularity, to the extent that in 1989 he won the title of Uncrowned King in a competition for off-island artists at Trinidad’s annual Carnival. Easing into the day with some classic Lovers Rocks, Sonia Whittingham’s Sweet Sensation, originally released on Star Disc in 1988 and reissued last year on the always on point @isleofjurarecords. This record has been in our want list for many years now but sellers have always wanted almost triple figures for an original, so it was great to see IOJ work their magic on it. They regularly deal with left of centre sounds from the vast dub universe and this gem sits perfectly within that. Sweet vocals flow over a nice rolling digi style beat, what’s not to like! This 12 comes with a full disco mix and killer dub on the flip, big tip!

One of our absolute favourite pick ups from the end of last year, a holy grail Disco 12, Vance & Suzanne’s I Can’t Get Along Without You, originally released in 1980 on Vanton Records and then lovingly reissued by @kalita_records in 2019. With original copies now going for triple figures, the reissue has helped bring this masterpiece to the world once more. Vanton Records was the product of two members of Crown Heights Affair (Richard Vance Turner and Eleton Johns), the label was established as a way to protect both their musical freedom and copyright that they would have lost had they signed to a major label. With Vanton, they sought to create a sound that combined Eleton’s love for Philadelphia with Richard’s love for New York-based productions. Vance & Suzzanne consisted of Richard and his childhood friend and fellow band member Suzzanne Slaughter, who was a background singer for many bands in New York including Sister Sledge. The result of a late night writing session between Richard and Eleton and recorded to tape the following day, the record was finished in just twenty-four hours. Yet it’s legacy lives on as one of the most sought-after disco singles in existence. Two thousand copies of ‘I Can’t Get Along Without You’ were originally pressed to test the market, with the initial plan being to re-record it again at a later date with additional strings. However, the record received such great acclaim by DJs such as Larry Levan that the idea of a re-recording was put on ice. Sadly, due to academic and familial commitments of both Richard and Eleton, only one other single was ever released on Vanton Records in 1985. However, this definitive reissue definitely helps to celebrate one of the best disco records ever put to wax!

Keeping the vibes warm during these winter months with one of our favourite picks ups from this year, Celia & Johnny’s self titled LP, released on multiple Latin American labels in 1974, this is the Cuban Areito version. Classic NY style Salsa all over this LP at various tempos, some dance floor numbers but also a couple of lovely laid back tunes as well, highly recommended!
