The recent freezing weather did not stop protesters from making their point in limited clothing! PETA supporters dressed in bear masks and covered in “arrow wounds” sprawl on Union Jack flags as they “die-in” near the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) headquarters to protest its support of the slaughter of Canadian black bears for the Kings Guards bearskin caps. The action follows a new PETA video revealing how bears are baited with food and shot with crossbows by recreational hunters in Canada - a form of hunting that has been illegal in the UK since 1981. It takes the skin of at least one bear to make a single cap and according the MoD it has bought 498 bearskin hats between 2017 and 2022 – this is despite being offered a superior faux fur version, produced by ECOPEL, in 2017, with the offer of supplying an unlimited amount to the ministry for free for 10 years. 💥 Pelham’s Pumpkin Smash is back along with a Post-Halloween Cleanup this Saturday, November 4th! 🚮 🕘 Between 9 - 10 am, show up at any of Pelham’s elementary schools for a Post-Halloween Cleanup. Let’s pitch in to pick up the candy wrapper litter we’re bound to find and protect our local wildlife, waterways, and ecosystems. The PTA will be at each elementary school to provide the supplies you need. 🕚 Between 11 am - 1 pm, bring your pumpkins, gourds, and jack-o-lanterns over to the Pumpkin Smash at the Village lot behind 195 Sparks Avenue where we’ll smash them! We’ll divert organic pumpkin waste from the waste stream so it can be recycled into soil as compost. Compost is a natural soil fortifier that helps store carbon, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and grow healthier plants. ✅ Painted pumpkins are accepted at the Pumpkin Smash and in the Food Scrap bins. Please remove all decorations and candles. 🚫 Do not place pumpkins in curbside leaf piles because they cannot be mixed with yard waste. Despite the rain, it was all “boots on the ground” for EcoPel and volunteers from Hutchinson River Restoration Project and Mario Bulfamante & Sons Landscaping, during a unique land/water cleanup experience of the Hutchinson River at East Sandford Boulevard at Glover Field last weekend. Using a small excavator and rig pulley on land, Bulfamante's crew removed decades worth of visible trash pollution in three hours. Here’s what they pulled out: ▪️Nine shopping carts ▪️Two bicycles ▪️One wheelchair ▪️One iron lamp ▪️Two iron plant stands ▪️Car tires ▪️Mounds of household rugs, curtains, and blankets ▪️Large sheets of scrap metal ▪️Asphalt blocks On land, HRRP, EcoPel, Pelham Boy Scouts, Village of Pelham Sustainability Advisory Board and Town of Pelham Board members, and other community volunteers, cleaned the riverside edge beside the Target parking garage. Here’s what they gathered: ▪️More than thirty 50-gallon sized bags of mixed litter ▪️Metal pipes ▪️One car tire ▪️One 18” x 20” metal sign, “Please pick up and return carts here” EcoPel is proud to successfully collaborate with organizations and volunteers from across the Hutchinson River watershed including Pelham, Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle, and the Bronx, to help bring back a clean and healthy river! We are all in this together. Thanks to Pelham Union Free School District for disposing of the trash. Big wildlife dreams in public spaces reached the Hutchinson River; proud to collaborate with volunteers from across the watershed to help clean up this impaired waterway. #hutchprotector #ecopel
It can feel overwhelming to create change, but this weekend, despite the 7️⃣TH Rainy weekend in a row, a clean up was organized to give back to a waterway so vital to so many communities; the Hutchinson River. Alongside approximately 15 others from The Hutchinson River Restoration Project, EcoPel, and simply individuals of all ages that care, we cleaned up 6 shopping carts, a 🦽, and other detritus from the River as well as maxed out over 15 bags of garbage that were strewn about behind the parking lot of Target. I’m not going to spare the details of what we picked up because it needs a permanent solution of fencing on the parking deck to prevent litter from making its way into nature and inevitably into the River, where great blue herons, egrets, double crested cormorants, alewife, and striped bass among many other species make their home. Within the garbage we removed a DVD player, numerous dirty diapers, single use plastics, a lamp, paint cans, and much more. All of this detritus, much of which is recyclable, polluting the natural environment. In speaking with one of the volunteers, this type of cleanup was done 5 years ago and it was as if nothing changed. We need permanent solutions and partners. Currently the Hutchinson River is not safe for swimming, but there is no reason we cannot achieve that goal, it just takes effort and activism.
