Dr. Jason Nagata is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, and is an expert in eating disorders, particularly in boys and men. . In my time with time with Dr. Nagata, we consider the damaging effects of societal body image ideals among boys and men. . We also discuss: -the lack of research and awareness regarding eating disorders in males -the increasing prevalence of eating disorders in general -the normalization of disordered food and exercise-related behaviors in athletics, -and the impact of social media on body image struggles and eating behaviors. . According to Dr. Nagata, 2/3 of American teenagers want to change their bodies. In today’s episode, he helps us better understand food and body image-related struggles among boys and men. . Whether you’re an elite or recreational athlete women are at high risk of under-fuelling. Unfortunately these stats currently focus on the gender binary. This risk increases hugely when athletes are in sports where there is an asthetic component or being at a lower weight is considered beneficial for performance (or animal welfare - I’m looking at you equestrians). The good news is athletes who have been underfuelling notice a difference in energy and performance quickly when they start working with me. #fuelledathletes #sportsnutrition #eatingdisordersinathletes #underfuelling #sportsdietitian

First off: I love sports! Being part of a team was one of the highlights of my experience as a kid. And it's why I loved coaching girls' sports. I'm also a huge sports fan myself, specially MLB and NCAA women's basketball. Seeing all the little kids cheering on Caitlin Clark gets me even more excited about the next generation of young athletes. I also know that coaches and families need more support and information to navigate—and minimize—the risks that can come with sports participation. The playing field can be a diet culture minefield. Having conversations with our kids and their coaches can go a long way. I hope some of these scripts help you open the door to a dialogue. And if you are looking for specific nutrition guidance, definitely get answers from a registered dietitian who also knows about sports nutrition and eating disorders. The Female Athlete Triad is a syndrome involving three interconnected components: restrictive eating, menstrual disturbance, and decreased bone density. Common among female athletes, particularly those in sports emphasizing leanness or endurance, the triad results from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. Inadequate nutrition can lead to menstrual irregularities and compromise bone health, increasing the risk of stress fractures. Recognizing and addressing the Female Athlete Triad is crucial for promoting long-term health, performance, and preventing complications related to bone and reproductive health.

Opening up the conversation. 💬 Eating disorders can be the elephant in the room when it comes to friendships. Especially in our industry. You might have a friend who has taken their New Year’s resolutions to the extreme and is on a slippery slope toward becoming unwell. Raising the conversation might be the first time they acknowledge they are struggling. Don’t be discouraged if your olive branch isn’t accepted to begin with. It can often take some time for someone to accept help, especially if they have been using food and exercise to numb bigger emotions and feelings. Your invitation to talk about their struggles could threaten that safety blanket for them. Comments that are not useful are things such as commenting on their weight and size and commenting on their food intake or lack of. This can be triggering for someone. 🤍

1/23/2024, 4:05:30 PM

Weight and measurements can tend to feature often in the thoughts of those with eating disorders. Sometimes we can become fixated by the numbers on the scale or on the label of our clothes, rather than focussing in on how we feel. This is your gentle reminder that a number DOES NOT define you. The scale may fluctuate slightly from day to day, even hour to hour, but that shows that your body is working efficiently, moving and flowing with its hormones and water levels. Clothes sizes vary from shop to shop, but your aura and energy are what make the clothes shine brighter. If you do currently weigh or measure yourself, ask yourself what you are hoping for? How would those numbers impact your day or thoughts? And if you can reduce the number of times you step on the scales, please try to. And let's try to zoom in on the things that make you wonderful....Could you find one thing that you like about yourself today? Could you find one thing that you can say you're good at? Could you think about how, just your smile could brighten someone's day? And then there's your grit and passion and resilience....yep, you are definitely way more than just a number. x

As we tiptoe towards a new year, it might be nice to do some reflection of 2023. As the door gently closes we can choose what we'd like to leave behind, whilst also choosing the tools, habits and behaviours we'd like to step forward in to. Take a few minutes for yourself, if you can, over the next couple of days to think about the prompts above. Who has supported you or held you up? When were you strong or when did you make yourself proud? And what have you added to your toolkit this year? These reflections can help you move in to the next chapter feeling empowered and with a little bit of wind in your sails. x

Disordered eating can be accompanied by feelings of anxiety, low mood, and a sense of being trapped. For some individuals, their eating disorder becomes the dominant force in their lives, dictating their actions and decisions. Despite the desire to break free and make choices based on personal freedom, the voice of the eating disorder or exercise addiction prevails. It convinces them that without strict control and rigidity, they will unravel. At Iris Clinic, our aim is to assist you in silencing that voice until it vanishes completely, leaving no room for anxiety in your daily choices. Through our support, you will reach a point of deep connection with your authentic self, experiencing profound peace and self-assurance when it comes to food and exercise. We firmly believe in the possibility of achieving full recovery, and it is our utmost purpose at Iris Clinic to guide you to that place. N+S X

The 'Audition body' We know that audition season is fast approaching and just around the corner from Christmas. We know from years in the industry that this time can be a real sticky point when it comes to how we nourish our bodies over the festive season. Please trust us when we say you will be better equipped for your auditions if you are fuelled properly. If you lean into the joy of Christmas rather than restricting yourself. These short term goals and checkpoints for your body can be really damaging to your long term recovery. Try to remember your 'why.' Why do you want to be in that audition room? Why would you love to be in that show every night? What would it make you feel? That feeling is what you need to take into the room with you, not the fictional 'Audition body.'

Eating disorders/disordered eating is and isn’t about food. Our habits and behaviours surrounding food are the symptoms that often front a deeper struggle on the inside. At Iris Clinic, we restore you to your highest-self so you can find complete freedom in your day to day life within the performing industry. N & S x

12/15/2023, 5:16:33 PM

Going home or being with family for Christmas is usually a source of celebration and joy. But for some, that may involve returning to a house or a room that was or is triggering. It could also involve being party to insensitive conversations or triggering remarks from those around us. If this is true for you, try to create your own safe haven - whether that's something physical, audible, or readable. Try to prepare for any triggers you may face so they have less chance of catching you off guard. Rest, treat yourself with kindness, and be gentle if any triggers do arise.

12/14/2023, 2:56:48 PM

Determining whether or not an individual seeks professional assistance for disordered eating often hinges on significant weight fluctuations or life-threatening circumstances. However, at Iris Clinic, we operate under a different philosophy. Our primary objective is to provide a safe haven for performers seeking help, regardless of the specific symptoms they may be experiencing. When grappling with disordered eating or an eating disorder, it can be confusing to gauge if you are "ill enough" to seek support. Many performers find themselves in a "grey area" of recovery, where certain symptoms may be mistaken for "discipline," and they may outwardly appear highly functional while feeling depleted and adrift internally. It is crucial to remember that you always deserve assistance, regardless of your circumstances. N+S X

Meet the team 🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️ Iris Clinic originated when Steph and Nadia collaborated during a joint project in 2020. As time progressed, it became evident that there was an overwhelming need within the performing arts industry for their brand of work and intervention—one that extended far beyond the scope of their initial project. Thus, it became their shared passion to establish a sanctuary where performers who battle with disordered eating, eating disorders, body image concerns, low self-esteem, and diminished self-worth can once again thrive. Both Steph & Nadia are performers who have lived out their dreams in shows and companies that were on their 'bucket lists.' Both come to this work with lived experiences, personal learning and growth and a passion for supporting the future generation of performers and hopefully making the industry a happier, more nurturing place.

In some sports, weight classes, such as boxing or wrestling, require an athlete to keep under a certain weight to compete." This is why I advocate for youth athletes to learn: 👉🏼 How to have a healthy relationship with food 👉🏼 How to fuel for performance without cutting food groups 👉🏼 How to use neutral language when talking about food As coaches, you see these athletes day in and day out; you have the unique opportunity to be able to guide them toward performance vs food and body obsession. Hey Ya’ll! Over the past few months a lot of new folks have rolled in and so I wanted to re-introduce myself. My name is Kate and I am the owner of Serendipity Counseling Services! I am a therapist that specializes in working with those struggling with their relationship with food, their body, and movement. As someone who has had to fight the demon of an eating disorder, I know recovery is hard AND it is possible. A big part of my recovery processing was learning to love movement and my sport again and I have made it part of my mission to help guide others to find what a healthy relationship with sport can look like for them. I work from a Health At Every Size framework and help folks get in touch with their own mind-body connection. I currently live in NJ, but am licensed to see folks in NJ, MD, PA, and FL which is why I am totally virtual! During sessions with me you may get a visitor pop in once in a while. His name is Monti and he is my wonderful pup in the picture! When I am not in sessions with clients, I am often cooking, running, hiking, or snuggling on the couch with Monti and a good cup of coffee. A little fun fact about me is I studied culinary nutrition before becoming a therapist, which was also a huge part of my recovery process and my side passion of cooking! I appreciate every single one of you for supporting my journey to spread awareness around eating disorders! Treatment barriers can look a bit different for athletes. It can be terrifying loosing not only your academic identity but also your sport identity. Putting these two things aside for treatment may seem extreme. You may think “This is just what I need to do to be a good athlete”. I will say it over a thousand times. But wait! There’s more. If you missed my last post for Eating Disorders Awareness Week, check it out for some insight on how comments related to food, weight, and behaviors can affect someone who’s struggling. Today, the bits and pieces of my writing from past years turns the focus specifically to a few ways in which an eating disorder can affect athletes. Takeaways: Having an active lifestyle does not exempt someone from struggling with food or being affected by your comments. You never know what someone is going through just by seeing what they eat or do not eat. Choose your words wisely. You never know who might be listening or what kind of effect it will have. Athletics provide positive stressors for individuals, like building self-esteem, promoting physical conditioning, and demonstrating the value of teamwork— but not all athletic stressors are positive. Pressure to win (by coaches, teammates, family, etc.) and an emphasis on body weight and shape can create a toxic combination. Athletic competition can also contribute to severe psychological and physical. When the pressures of athletic competition are added to a cultural emphasis on thinness, the risks increase for athletes to develop disordered eating habits. It’s important to pay special attention to the adolescent female athlete. This group is at an increased risk for developing the female athlete triad because of the active biological changes and growth spurts, peer and social pressures, and rapidly changing life circumstances that go along with the teenage years. For more information, visit https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/eating-disorders-athletes #NEDAW2023 #EatingDisordersInAthletes #FemaleAthleteTriad

Eating disorders are all around us and they are going without being diagnosed. Often with athletes it’s just pushed off as being strong, determined, and disciplined. But in all reality up to 45% of female athletes and 19% of males struggle with an eating disorder. So now is the time to know you are NOT ALONE in this. 🚩Identifying red flags of an eating disorder in teammates: - picking at their food but not eating it -notice their uniform is really loose on them all of a sudden (Weight loss) -intense fear of weigh gain - lots of rules around food -believing they are in a larger body than they actually are Come back tomorrow to learn about different eating disorders athletes face!

🚫THIS is NOT health and fitness. A lean physique is not always a reflection of somebody’s overall health! This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week and I feel that this is an important topic worth discussing. It may seem contradicting coming from someone years competing in a physique sport, but this is a message I’ve shared with my clients and feel strongly about sharing with anyone willing to listen. 📣 With the fitness industry forever evolving, there has been quite a massive shift in what “Fitness” is perceived to be these days. With social media being such a big part of the fitness industry, I see and hear women look at photos of extremely lean physiques and think…goals! They compare themselves to competition spam photos, photo shoots and other unrealistic posed photos these fitness accounts are sharing and making appear so achievable and normal. It’s important to know that what somebody looks like on stage or in some of these photo’s we see online is unrealistic to maintain and being lean for too long can be detrimental to your health in many ways. It is likely you will develop some sort of disordered eating along the way and you will spend DOUBLE the time recovering from these negative adaptations compared to the time it took to get shredded. MAKE SURE it's worth it to you and you're doing it for the right reasons. 🤦🏻‍♀️Neglecting overall health and quality of life to maintain a lean physique whether you compete or not is not what fitness IS or should be about. Health and fitness is much more than we see on the outside. I will tell you first hand that what I look like here in this photo does not represent a healthy body image or mindset. Health and fitness should be about sustaining quality of life while working toward realistic goals by doing things you enjoy! 🛑 Have boundaries with what/who you follow and stop wasting energy comparing yourself to pictures you see on social media. . . . . #eatingdisordersinathletes #formerphysiqueathlete #eatingdisorderawarenessweek #edsinathletes #edrecovery #femaleathlete #femaleathletes #womenempowerment #womensupportingwomen #bodybuilding #womeninfitness #fitnessandnutrition #fitnesscoach #nutritioncoach

Thanks to donors and supporters like you, this past year we had 6 more Running in Silence talks than in 2021, reached an additional 400 coaches, and started talking to athletic groups beyond running (volleyball clinics and a variety of sports coaches). We've already started scheduling appearances at 2023 coaching clinics, but many clinics don't get sufficient funding to bring in this message. November 29 marks Giving Tuesday, a day devoted to fundraising for nonprofits like Running in Silence. Your donation can help support most of talks to coaches and athletes. No matter how much you’re able to give, you can be part of the effort to ensure that Running in Silence services can continue, expand, and remain at a reduced or free cost to coaching clinics and athletes. Our goal is to reach $3,000 for this Giving Tuesday, which will support up to three talks for 2023--and if we can get $100 through this Instagram fundraiser (see bio), that will help us work toward our goal. Finally, a big thank-you to this year's sponsors: @maggiefarrell04 , Kellie Wolff, Christine Wheeler Foundation, McAleenan Family Foundation, @maraschino.sheri , John Schmidt, and Sarah DeGraff. We appreciate your generosity and support! You helped us to reach as many coaches and athletes as we did, and we know how important it is to reach even more. . . #givingtuesday #runninginsilence #runner #edrecovery #eatingdisorderrecovery #athletementalhealth #eatingdisordersinathletes #edawareness #eatingdisorderawareness

Jumping for joy because I can run an 8mile workout while pushing the stroller and still have energy at the end for life. Deep in my eating disorder energy for life things other than running was non-existent. Every bit of energy I had went into running then I was left exhausted and unhappy. Learning to fuel correctly before, during, and after running and maintaining a healthy weight changed all of that. Often times runners tell me they feel fine and have enough energy/ running is going well. What they don't realize is they've forgotten what feeling good actually feels like and they are selling themselves short both athletically and in life. I always ask my runners to track their energy levels, mood, and perceived exertion as a way to see the positive impacts of fueling correctly. You might think you feel fine and are performing well but what if you can feel better and perform amazing? You'll never know if you don't try to fuel differently, so give it a try and see. I promise, it's worth it.
