#Aerosmith pulled off one of the single greatest comebacks of all time with 87’s #PermanentVacation; a truly amazing feat that would have been even more impressive if they hadn’t released #DoneWithMirrors first. This was meant to be the band’s triumphant return but it falls short for me in so many ways from the tepid #TedTempleman production to the dozy performances to the lackluster songwriting - it’s a real disappointment. Even so, and like I said before, there are always a few tracks on every Aerosmith album that justify its existence and those would be #LetTheMusicDoTheTalking (although I prefer the #JoePerry version), #MyFistYourFace, #TheReasonADog, and #Darkness which was released as a single but failed to find any major success despite being the coolest goddam cut on the album. #RockInAHardPlace might be considered “rock bottom” for #Aerosmith although I know people who would give that honor to #DoneWithMirrors, #JustPushPlay, or a certain track from a certain Bruce Willis blockbuster. For me, however, this is simply a solid sleaze-metal record that most likely wouldn’t be remembered today if not for the presence of #StevenTyler. #JoePerry left during the #NightInTheRuts tour and was replaced by journeyman #JimmyCrespo and #BradWhitford bailed shortly into the sessions for this album and was replaced by #RickDufay so what you get here is not really a true Aerosmith release. That said, even the band’s weakest efforts still have one or two (or three) cool tracks to justify their existence and once past bizarre psychedelic experiments like #JoaniesButterfly and abrasive balladry like #CryMeARiver you’re left with some pretty decent rockers like #LightningStrikes, #JigIsUp, #BolivianRagamuffin, and the title track which is a song I’m convinced #TaimeDowne must have played to death in his formative years. When is a comeback album not a comeback album? When it's Done With Mirrors, unfortunately. This is not a bad album by any means, but it was not the comeback that the original lineup of @aerosmith would have been expecting. Instead, it was a critical and commercial disappointment and you do wonder where the band might have gone if Run DMC hadn't reworked Walk This Way a year later. It marked the return original guitarists Joe Perry, who had left in 1979, and Brad Whitford, who had left in 1981. The band's 1st album on Geffen Records, and it was intended as their "comeback". However, despite good reviews, it did not live up to commercial expectations. Producer Ted Templeman wanted to capture the band's aggressive, "out of control freight train" sound by removing the red light indicating that recording was underway (a technique he had used to capture Van Halen's sound). Templeman told the band to run through the songs in the studio and recorded them without their knowledge. Whitford referred to the nerves generated when knowingly recording songs as "the red light blues.” On VH1 Classic's That Metal Show, Joey Kramer expressed his dislike of Done with Mirrors, claiming that the band "never really finished it." Joe Perry said, "Done with Mirrors, as far as I'm concerned, is our least inspired record. But I've heard fans really like it, so I'm not gonna stand there and tell 'em, 'No, it sucks.'
