I have had many wonderful opportunities to meet Disney celebrities, but nothing comes close to meeting Walt's very own daughter, Diane! During the 2000 Disneyana, Diane Disney Miller made a very rare appearance . I know I mentioned that Disneyana was the precursor to D23. It was a very intimate gathering for the most ardent Disney fan. Anyway, Diane appeared to promote a DVD that presented the history of her father from the unique perspective that only Diane and her family could do. Some years earlier, I had worked with other merchandise artists to develop a Disney train for train collectors. My portion was to design the figurines. Naturally, I did Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. The engineer would be Mickey since Walt Disney was a HUGE train fan. I decided I would give the engineer sketch to one of Diane's handlers with the instructions to give it to her later. All merchandise artists were invited to lunch during the convention. Unbeknownst to us , Diane Disney Miller was coming to see us. She spoke with us about her father and thanked us for keeping the magic alive. When she finished up, the handler came forward and told Diane I wanted to present her with a gift. My face was burning with embarrassment , however, I mustered the courage, and I went up to her. It was the greatest moment for me... Not only did she embrace me, but we both got emotional over her father. I thanked her father for fulfilling a lifelong dream of a young boy from Massachusetts who always dreamed of being not just an artist but a Disney artist! Someone suggested we all pose together with Diane holding my picture! It's a great photo that I will always cherish. This museum was an attraction on our #CityPass and took us all the way through the early history of Walt’s family and early animation all the way up to the construction of the theme parks. There was A LOT to see some of my favorite items were original sketches and stills from the movies. The exhibits here are a really good reflection of Walt’s legacy and I highly recommend visiting. Last Night we went to a YPO event at the Disney Family Museum San Francisco. I got the opportunity to sit and spend a little time with Disney Legend Floyd Norman and his amazing wife Adrienne Brown-Norman. YPO is all about having 5% conversations but speaking with Adrienne was more like having a frank conversation with my late grandmother Bobbie Houston. I so appreciate Floyd’s answers to my questions and the time I got to spend with them both. Looking forward to watching the documentary Floyd Norman: An Animated Life. Throwback to April when I got to visit the Walt Disney Studio Lot and see some of the Archives. I may look a bit tired but I was emotional from being able to see Walt’s Office. The Presidio is easily one of my favorite parts of San Francisco! 😎 🌲 🌳 😍 There is so much open space in this area, you can spend days just exploring the various hiking and biking trails that are available. When you're going through the open space here, it feels like you're a hundred miles away from the big city. It's a perfect place to experience a bit of quiet and solitude. But as you can see, there are also a huge number of beautiful buildings here! You can visit the Disney Family Museum, check out the Yoda statue for Star Wars fans, or participate in any number of other activities. If you're able to visit the Presidio, I would highly suggest it! TOUR GUY TIP: The Presidio is obviously beautiful, but it also has some of the most interesting history in the city. In fact the Officers Club is the second oldest building in SF, dating back to 1776! The National Park Service has opened up the walls so you can see each layer of construction, going all the way back to the original 18th century adobe building. Probably my most unique piece of Sisney clothing. I got this Donald Duck WWII wind breaker and hat from the @wdfmuseum last year for my birthday. Walt was never in the military but he was very patriotic and drove an ambulance for the Red Cross to help with casualties. He did some propaganda cartoons….annnd well, they would of been cancelled today for sure as most things from the past.
