Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork (September 1998 Avantgarde Music) Kind of a cool one here. I can't remember where I got this from, but it was during the peak black metal years. A solo project in a sense from Anders Nyström, aka Blakkheim from Katatonia and Bloodbath. Album also features one Mr. Dan Swano, musician, and producer extraordinaire. I guess you could call this symphonic black metal in a way. It does have keys, but also harpsichords and cleanly picked parts and melodies that wouldn’t sound out of place on earlier Opeth albums. Add some thrashy riffs here and there and you have a solid album. This is such a wonderful piece of black metal that it's a shame it didn’t really break the underground. Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (March 2001 Avantgarde Music/Century Media) The fourth and final album under the Diabolical Masquerade monicker. Supposedly written as the score to a non-existent horror movie, it's broken down into 20 'movements' over 61 tracks. I'm a little on the fence about this one. On one hand, it's a very ambitious and grandiose idea and endeavor. Musically it works in a lot of places. It also stumbles in others. If taken for what it's supposed to be, a film score, then it makes sense. But if listened to for what it is, a metal record, it's disjointed and frustrating. The programed drums are distracting and basic. A lot of the songs start of strong. The black metal is strong, then it goes into some Pestilence Spheres like weirdness. Then goes into distorted vocals, symphonic orchestrated sections, and yeah, it doesn't work for me. I've read comparisons to Edge of Sanitys Crimson, and I can hear the similarities. But Crimson worked more often than not, and this feels like the opposite. Diabolical Masquerade - The Phantom Lodge Blackheim continued his masquerade at The Phantom Lodge. He booked Unisound Studio again to record Diabolical Masquerade's sophomore album, which was released a year after Ravendusk in My Heart was released. The Phantom Lodge continued Ravendusk in My Heart's symphonic/melodic black metal style, with some elements from the latter album remained/making a re-apperance in the former album such as Dan Swanö's 80s heavy metal vocals which was previously heard on Under the Banner of the Sentinel can be heard again on Hater. Other than that, Ravenclaw is also heavy metal-oriented because some of its riffing & vocals are reminiscent of Manowar. There are some new elements on the album such as flutes which can be heard on Cloaked by the Moonshine Mist & Across the Open Vault and Away... which gives the songs a folky nordic atmosphere. A person named Ingmar Döhn was credited for recording a bass solo on the former track, which is one of the new elements on the album. Ingmar is supposedly the name of Blackheim's old teacher from his music class. Dan was also credited as Sean C. Bates for recording drums on the album where he played drum fills on live drums & he mixed it with programmed drum beats. Upon the Salty Wall of the Broody Gargoyle has Blackheim imitating Tom G. Warrior's vocals during the song's verses. Most of the songtitles & lyrics doesn't mention Blackheim unlike before because Blackheim himself tried to avoid from basing himself as the main character on the songs but the lyrics still has the medieval fantasy concept from the previous album & one song mentions him. He brought an old friend, Roger Öberg to record pagan screams on Astray Within the Coffinwood Mill. Although its production is similar to Ravendusk in My Heart's production, The Phantom Lodge is a little more varied thanks to the addition of flutes & a bass solo along with the influence of Celtic Frost which is present on the last track as well as the mixture of live & programmed drums. I've also included a fun fact about what happened during the recording process of the album, which is pinned in the comments below.

Diabolical Masquerade - Ravendusk in My Heart Diabolical Masquerade was formed by Blackheim & Jonas Renkse was initially meant to be a part of the band. Both of them initially wanted to use Djävulsk Maskerad at first, but they later went for the English translation of the band name. Jonas even drew an early version of Diabolical Masquerade before he began to lose his interest in black metal over time, which made Diabolical Masquerade a solo project of Blackheim. Ravendusk in My Heart is the first album by Diabolical Masquerade, which was released in late 1996. Blackheim recorded the album at Unisound Studios in September 1995. The drums were programmed by Dan Swanö, who is also responsible behind the album's cold, symphonic keyboards as well as for producing & mixing the album. Other than that, Blackheim has a raspy shriek & his riffs ranges from distorted melodic riffing to clean riffs. He also delivers some spoken word & deep, clean singing as well as few growls on certain parts of the album. Blackheim wrote most of the lyrics & his pseudonym is referenced on 5 songtitles. He is also referenced in most of the lyrics which are fantasy-themed. Ravendusk in My Heart mostly keeps at a mid-tempo & sometimes it picks up the pace, particularly when The Sphere in Blackheim's Shrine immediately starts. The album has its own surprising moments, for instance when Dan suddenly sings with heavy metal vocals during Under the Banner of the Sentinel which is fitting due to the song itself having 80s-metal riffing & solos. Blackheim mixed symphonic black metal with melodic riffing, clean riffs, spoken words & atmospheric synths seamlessly along with unexpected moments such as the inclusion of heavy metal vocals on Under the Banner of Sentinel where its heavily inspired by 80's metal & the part on Blackheim's Hunt for Nocturnal Grace where riffs gets very melodic while Blackheim does some choral-like vocals. The cover art shows the Sedlec Ossuary. The album was released in a 6-panel digipak. The album was reissued via Peaceville Records in 2007 & on May 28, 2021 with the bonus track, “Cryztalline Fiendz”. Everything is incredibly varied and diverse, the atmospheres and song structures makes the songs intriguing and continually interesting. You might think that one part sounds bad but suddenly the track takes a different turn and suddenly you like it. The only possible flaws that this album has might be the slightly flat sound production. The bass should’ve been a bit more audible, or at least the rhythm guitars could’ve been thicker. Everything is audible but the overall sound could’ve used some more thickness. Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork Nightwork is the third opus of Diabolical Masquerade, released in 1998. This album is notable for it's avant-garde take on symphonic/melodic black metal. Blakkheim's vocals ranges from shrieks, growls & he even throws in King Diamond-styled clean vocals. The riffs on the album alternate between tremolo melodic riffing & thrashy, galloping riffs & those riffs are sometimes accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Clean riffs can be also heard from time to time & the occassional, wailing lead guitar melodies is what makes Nightwork such a decent album. Furthermore, the album's release also marked the first time where acoustic drums were used instead of a drum machine, which was used entirely on Ravendusk in My Heart and half-used on The Phantom Lodge. The drumming on Nightwork is performed by the genius himself, Dan Swanö who throws in some interesting fills. He has also recorded keyboards on the album & it ranges from pianos, harpsicohords & glockenspiels that creates a sinister vibe that makes you feel like you're watching a horror movie which is set in a creepy carnival. One keyboard part that stands out is during Thiz Ghoultimate Omen where the keyboards borrows a melody from the theme song of Children of the Corn (1984). Dan has also recorded the cello & flute for Nightwork, the former is evident some songs like Rider on the Bonez where the latter is a nice touch to the album's atmosphere. In my opinion, this is definitely the most unique album by Diabolical Masquerade due to its theatrical take on avant-garde symphonic meloblack with elements of traditional heavy metal.
