Born in 1811, conjoined twins Chang and Eng Bunker were born in Siam—and would later inspire the popular expression “Siamese twins.” In 1829, a merchant brought them to the United States, where they began performing as curiosities in “freak shows.” But the Bunker twins felt exploited and cheated by their managers who pocketed all of their earnings. No doubt dreaming of a better life, they decided to strike out on their own. For the next seven years, the brothers toured independently—but once they’d amassed a small fortune, they did something unexpected. They quit performing and settled in North Carolina, where they eventually became plantation owners. It was quite the rags-to-riches story—the Bunker twins now living in luxury. They purchased slaves, married a pair of sisters, and eventually fathered 21 children. However, the Civil War threw a wrench in their lifestyle. The twins lost their slaves and a lot of money—and they had to return to the stage in 1869 to support themselves and their families. After suffering a stroke that paralyzed his right side in 1870, Chang struggled with health, eventually passing at the age of 62. “We are all terminal. We are all dying. We all share the same fate — death.” This is something that Jessica Hanna would often say on her social media platforms. I never would have thought to think that my infant daughters were diagnosed as terminal even in the womb. The day her cancer returned was the same day that I got the official diagnosis that I was pregnant for the first time with conjoined twins, two girls who shared one heart and would die shortly after birth. I was just 10 weeks pregnant when I learned they were fused at the chest, sharing a heart, liver, diaphragm, bowels and umbilical cord. I refused abortion even when the doctors said my life was at risk. Jessica was pregnant when she was diagnosed with cancer and she also refused abortion and trusted in God. Miraculously, her son was born perfectly healthy despite her receiving chemotherapy while pregnant. And also, miraculously, after her pregnancy she was cleared of cancer. Jessica’s story and mine were shared in various news outlets, including the Register, EWTN, ChurchPop, and many more Catholic and pro-life outlets. We also belonged to the same parish, St. Joseph Shrine in Detroit. While there, I learned about a parishioner who had cancer and was in need of prayers. This parishioner was Jessica Hanna. I found her Instagram account and was immediately drawn to her and how fervently she prayed. Even in the midst of suffering, she was joyful. Especially with my high-risk pregnancy, I really needed a friend like her to learn how to suffer well. In the Spring 2023, ChurchPop shared a story about my daughters. Jessica saw this post and shared it on her Instagram. I then messaged her and we started chatting. We would talk about the uncertainties which lay ahead for both of us. Was her cancer progressing? Was I going to be able to live with the grief after knowing that my daughters would soon die after birth? My daughters’ C-section was moved to May 16. Lori and George Schappell, conjoined twins whose skulls were partly fused but who managed to lead independent lives, died on April 7 in Philadelphia. They were 62. Their death, at a hospital, was announced by a funeral home, which did not cite a cause. Dr. Christopher Moir, a professor of surgery at the Mayo Clinic, who has been on teams that separated six sets of conjoined twins — although none of them were joined at the head — said that when one of the Schappells died, the other would have almost certainly followed quickly. “Conjoined twins share circulation, he said, “so unless you somehow emergently divide their connection, it’s absolutely a fatal, nonviable process.” The Schappells lived much longer than had been expected when they were born as craniopagus twins, joined at the head, which is rare. They were cited as the second-oldest conjoined twins ever by Guinness World Records. They were connected at the sides of their foreheads and looked in opposite directions. Lori was able-bodied and pushed George, who had spina bifida, on a stool that had wheels. In early modern Europe, conjoined twins were considered within a larger group of “monstrous” births outside the normal course of nature, which included animal-human hybrids. This past weekend was my second time running @blueridgemarathon 🎉 In 2023 Kristen convinced myself and three others to run it with her. I ran the 1/2 in 2023 and loved the vibes of Roanoke so much, this year I went for the full. About a year ago, really the day after completing the race in 2023, Kristen planted the seed with @kslo92 and @godsrighthook3 that tackling the DOUBLE (you run 2 marathons back to back) was a good idea. I was already experiencing FOMO of the marathon which would be their 2nd marathon loop so I said I’ll go and my job will be to bring good vibes and make sure they finished. On Saturday @runwithcoachkristen finished her first marathon with 20 seconds till cut off. I knew that’s where my energy was needed. Time doesn’t matter, route isn’t important, details aren’t relevant. What does matter is YES I completed 26.2 miles for the 3rd time Saturday BUT Kristen completed 50 miles! Which was the furthest she’s EVER gone!! Sometimes life isn’t all about US, life is about supporting others and helping others crush goals they’ve set out for and making sure there’s no crying when it gets hard and being there to come up with wack ass topics to forget you’re completing 50 miles! #conjoinedtwins There were only happy tears and plan adapting to make sure we completed what we set out to do on Saturday. Life is all about adapting when it gets HARD having a support system in place and coming to terms with the fact 5ks and 10ks are excellent distances too! 😂 PS @dewvidman1 came in clutch with the chips 😆 Life is also about being a positive influence, Kristen single handedly convinced 3 people to run the US hardest road race in 2023, and in 2024 convinced us not only to do it again and at a further distance but influenced @mrm_iv to join in and @mattroutzahn by default ran his first 10k!!
