This was the only album released by the band that featured singer Jimmy Somerville who departed the band in ‘85. 🎧The album released four singles and had moderate success in the US. The first single “Small Town Boy” reached #48 on Billboard Hot 100 and was a huge success on the Billboard Dance Chart peaking at #1. The second single “Why?” was a Top 30 Billboard Dance Hit but failed to chart on the Hot 100. The 3rd single “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and 4th single ~ (a remake of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”) failed to chart in the US but were both successful in the U.K. 🎧 The album “The Age of Consent” did fairly well in the US peaking at #36 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and #20 US Billboard Dance Album Chart. On this day, forty years ago, 25 May 1984, British synth-pop band Bronski Beat released their queer anthem Smalltown Boy which topped charts worldwide. About 25 years later, for my syndicated queer column Three Dollar Bill, I tracked down and interviewed Jimmy Somerville, lead singer of Bronski Beat (his co-band members Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek have tragically since left us). At the time I was totally absolutely obsessed with Jimmy’s solo single Stone – still one of my all-time fave songs – from his 2000 solo album Manage the Damage, and Jimmy told me he was totally obsessed with Moby. This was a song I loved as a wee 10 yr old but didn't understand it fully until my late teens when its themes took on a whole new relevance to me. When it was re-released in 1991 it spoke to me - I was hurtling towards the expectation of a Mormon mission in a religion that didn't look too kindly on closeted gays. Running away seemed like the only option and this song became all I played while I weighed up all the options. One positive thing was I have channelled those experiences into a YA novel.
