45rpm spotlight: The Birdwatchers "I'm Gonna Do it to You" (Mala Records 1968) A Tampa, Florida based garage combo that released many 45s from 1965-72 (including a great cover of Spirit's "Mr. Skin"). Though they aren't as highly regarded by some in the garage community, I make it a point to seem out their 45s when I can find that. "I'm Gonna Do it to You" was a risqué title for the times, and it's a solid, fast-moving band original. Also of note, member Ish Ledesma made disco mega bucks with the band "Foxy," whose lead singer was Carl Driggs, who later sang for Paul Revere and the Raiders from 1983-2003. Wilson Pickett – Don’t knock my love (1971), Atlantic Records This weeks theme: Call my name, I’ll be there 👉Swipe for a sample! His 10th and last Atlantic record (in only six years!), before the Wicked Pickett sold his soul to RCA for a lot of dollars! Somehow this one is mostly ignored, but catches Pickett at his peak, he is still on fire. This is classic Wilson Pickett material: raw, heavy hitting Southern Soul, by one of the finest. Recorded by Brad Shapiro & Dave Crawford, At the Muscle Shoals studio with a band of locals and Detroit's finest: Dennis Coffey, Eddy Bongo Brown, Jack Ashford and of course The Memphis Horns, so you know what ya get. This record was actually planned as his second Philly record, but because of a financial conflict with Gamble and Huff he returned to much more familiar ground in Alabama. While there are many winners here, it’s the title track which is the highlight. 'Don't knock my love’ was mostly written and recorded in over 20 minutes. Classic Muscle Shoals stuff. Pickett had the hook, Shapiro responded with a verse, and the band immediately understood where this song was going. Part 2 is even better, psychedelic soul galore, with major influences by Dennis Coffey (specialized in psych stuff after working in Norman Withfields band for so many years). Jerry Wexler called Wilson Pickett the best artist he ever produced, but in ’72 his sales were peaking, but Picketts demanding and extreme aggressive behavior became worse by the day. So Wexler and Atlantic had to let him go. RCA gave him the million contract he demanded, but he never ever again touched the magic of his Atlantic years. Mildred Virginia Jackson aka #milliejackson was born in Thomson, Georgia in 1944. After her mother died, she moved with her father to Newark, New Jersey. From there to Brooklyn, New York to live with her aunt. In the late '60s she released a single on #MGMRecords. From there she went straight to #springrecords a label she remained loyal to from 1971 to 1984. She then released on #jiverecords and #IchibanRecords. In 1983 she released this, her 16th studio album. It was produced by #BradShapiro and herself.

Look no further than The Patterson Singers' self-titled album from 1972, which was the gospel group's lone secular release. Lead singer Mildred Lane's powerhouse vocals take center stage as the group expertly mines the territory of gospel, soul, and pop. Although the group didn't write their own songs, the team’s great taste in material shines through with an impressive selection of tracks from Don Covay, Eddie Holland & Norman Whitfield (covering a favorite song of mine first done by the Velvelettes and later by the Tempts), George Soule, and Ike Turner. If you're a fan of The Staples, you're sure to love this record. "How Can You Say That Ain't Love" is a stone groover that found fame on the UK's Northern Soul dancefloors years after its release. In an album full of high points, probably the pinnacle for me is the cover of Phillip Mitchell's, "The Only Time You Ever Say You Love Me (Is When We're Making Love)" which is a classic southern soul, gospel-fired ballad that was done by quite a few artists and this is perhaps the best of them all. #onthisday in 1971, Wilson Pickett’s psychedelic soul masterpiece, ‘Don’t Knock My Love’, went to number one in the Billboard R&B chart. The song was co-written by Wilson alongside producer Brad Shapiro. The song was the last part of a session at Muscle Shoals Sound in Alabama and grew out of a jam. All of the Muscle Shoals greats were in that day, Barry Beckett on organ, Dennis Coffey and Tippy Armstrong on guitars, David Hood on bass, Roger Hawkins drums and a couple of Motown guys, Eddie ‘Bongo’ Brown on congas and Jack Ashford on tambourine. Co-producer Dave Crawford played piano. “They were fooling around with a riff that Dennis had started playing and a bassline from David evolved from that,” recounts Shapiro. “Out of the corner of my eye I saw Pickett run into the vocal booth and when they got to a certain part of the riff, he started singing, “If you don’t like it, don’t knock it, somebody else, might want to rock it”. Shapiro grabbed a pad and started jotting down ideas for the verse. Nothing was planned at all. Happy with the lyrics Shapiro had written down, Wilson sang direct from the notepad. There was a strong word-of-mouth about the song: on the day of its release it sold between 25-30,000 copies in Detroit alone. It eventually wound up in the Billboard Hot 100 at #13. It was Pickett’s final hit. It was also later recorded for the Diana & Marvin duet album. With her raunchy rap delivery suddenly in full throttle and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section on board, she hit the deserved home run. The single itself is a double A classic. The A side actually became a pop hit, even getting played on some the most conservative Top 40’s. But it was the B-side, ‘The Rap’, where the fun really began. This is the side RnB radio went for. Given the no holds barred content, for 1974 at least, of course it exploded once on-air. Most people who follow current events know that the music world recently lost the late great Miami soul legend, Betty Wright. Betty sadly passed away on May 10th from cancer at the age 66. This is Betty's 1968 debut album titled "My First Time Around", released by Atco Records. Betty was only 14 years old at the time of this recording. What a voice beyond her years! This is an absolutely gorgeous original pressing. It was also released on CD in the early 2000's and reissued on vinyl in 2015. Although I like several of Betty's other albums, this is my personal favorite! Millie Jackson – It Hurt So Good (1973) Spring/Polydor records This week's Theme: Hello! Her second album and a hell of a good one. I love this title! This is the first (half) concept album in a row, which peaks with the album: ‘Caught up’ a year later. Where that album is only about being cheated and being the other woman, this record also has a number of semi-political tracks like the incredible "Hypocrisy" and "Two-Faced World". The album starts great with the delicious slow burner "All Cry", where she keeps repeating this text throughout the song for 4 minutes as a mantra and that hurts very good Miss Jackson. To set the tone even more, the first sentence of the 2nd song is; 'All Man Are Animals!', So watch your back guys... One of the best things about this album was the fact that it was the start of her collaboration with talented producer ‘Brad Shapiro’ who took her to famous Muscle Shoals studios where the houseband provided her with a real down & dirty funk sound. The music really matches her powerhouse voice perfectly. She is already growing in her role as "power woman but also a structural victim of love", with which she has become so famous. Of course the great title track "It Hurts So Good" was the biggest hit of the album. This was mainly due to the fact that this song was used in the Blaxploitation movie; ‘Cleopatra Jones’ from the same year. I'm a huge Ike and Tina fan, and her gritty attitude really reminds me of Tina. This LP is really a sleeper, but imo almost as good as her Magnus Opus.
