For a long time I was confused as to which building was actually the John Hancock Building. Is it this one pictured here? Or the one with the weather beacon? Or the tall sleek one thatās also called Hancock Tower? The historic Hayden Building stairwell is a thoughtfully designed space that tells the visual story of past and present at the same time. When climbing the stairs, there is a transition back and forth between the apartment entry stoops and the historic depository wall. This shifts the experience of the viewer from being on display in the large windows along the faƧade to a more intimate space for observing the infographic art panel layered over the existing brick walls. By juxtaposing weathered, historic elements with refined, contemporary layers, the awareness of both is heightened. It is through these moments that the richness of place and understanding of time emerges. #NationalPreservationMonth is not only about preserving historic buildings, but strengthening their identity. The character of a place is established by the people who have and continue to inhabit it. Extensively researching the evolution of the neighborhood and history of the Hayden Building's commercial occupants over the last 140 years allowed for us to exhibit the buildingās storied past through didactic art. Each panel is designed around a specific historical period or topic with layered images, drawings, and text we discovered through our research. Tom and Kellie became business partners in 2018 when they founded Bright Lark. Now, even when theyāre apart, they find ways to work together. Like when Kellie grabbed a photo of the Boston skyline from Ft. Point Channel and forwarded it to Tom, who was working remotely from Bright Lark's home office up on the hill that day. Tom used the photo to create a new image. He isolated its elements into separate layers, the individual buildings, lamp posts, and the figure on the bridge. He sketched a new, similar figure, drew new lamp posts by hand, and applied filters to each before merging everything into an illustration for an architecture article, capturing the city's updated ambiance. Iām reminded of Augustus W.N. Puginās 1830s book āContrastsā when I come across juxtapositions like this. Using illustrations to compare 19th century English buildings and cities with those of the 15th century, Pugin accused the architecture of his time as the root of all sorts of 19th century evils. . The new building at the left certainly didnāt cause the issues that plague our society (we did that on our own), but I wonder what these two buildings say about the values and goals of their time and their societies. . The home is thought to take on the form of a rock outcropping at the top of the hill, a simple rectangular bar. The roof angle parallels the slope of the site, underscoring the connection to the land and offers views up towards the treeline and sky through a series of skylights. We aim to bring in gentle, indirect natural light rather than harsh direct light. We are sad to say that the green staircase, the sculptural centerpiece of the BSA Space, has officially been removed. šļø In honor of this removal process nearing completion, we will be telling the story of this iconic structure in 4 installments. Part 1 honors the near-complete removal of the staircase outlines their creation, from the design competition and themes to the difficult fabrication and installation process. Porch Project Update No. 1: Check out the new turned stair balusters, beautiful and huge scalloped roof crest pieces, and all of the components that make up the arches: imposts, keystones, and the chamfered and grooved curves. Howās that for more #ArchitecturalDetail terminology?! If youāre wondering why the parts are gray, we had everything pre-painted with a tinted primer to prepare for a most likely darker color combo (read: Victorian period drama paint job!). Having the wood pre-primed before it is installed means it will be protected until the porch gets the final coats, done by a different contractor. The final color will NOT be gray!! Our design for @oaknbarrelnewton in Newton, MA is open, come visit. The project goal was to create a curated boutique offering top shelf crafted spirits for both aficionados and ordinary customers seeking premium products. The proprietors, who run a local pub in the same square, wanted the store to be capable of featuring local distilleries and breweries in a sprit-inspired environment, with custom display fixtures featuring specialty products and a prominent tasting counter as the center of programmed social events. Furthermore, it was important for the owners to use the storeās brand voice to feature and advocate for local charities.
