‘the Land Speaks’ the latest crone drawing. The model was my precious ‘Mum’ who passed several years ago at the age of 100. She was my partner’s mother, and she was my second mother as mine passed when I was only 22. Even though I was a strange giant of an American and she was tiny, of working class English stock, I always felt completely loved and accepted by her.

Dopo un periodo di silenzio sono tornata. Il make up di oggi è la mia risposta emotiva ad una delle poesie più belle della raccolta “Les fleurs du Mal”, Spleen. Cos’è lo Spleen? L’angoscia esistenziale, il baratro profondo dell’anima che ti intrappola nei suoi angoli più remoti e insidiosi. Immaginatela come un rampicante dal corpo esile ma forte che cresce ed attorciglia su di voi levandovi il respiro, ma lentamente così che pur intrappolandoli nella disperazione lascia gli occhi scoperti ad osservare ciò che vi scivola di fronte Se guardate attentamente i rampicanti lasciano intravedere lontanamente la forma di un teschio, sul lato sinistro del viso, l’effetto non era propriamente voluto, credo il mio inconscio abbia guidato le mie mani per me. Existential anguish, the deep abyss of the soul that traps you in its most remote and insidious corners. Imagine it as a creeper with a slender but strong body that grows and twists around you taking your breath away, but slowly so that while trapping them in despair, it leaves the eyes open to observe what slips in front of you. If you look carefully at the creepers, they allow a distant glimpse of the shape of a skull, on the left side of the face, the effect was not really wanted, I believe my unconscious has guided my hands for me. “The Lingering Insecurities” is a perfect example of the feelings I want to let go of going into this next year. Sometimes you rise to the top of a hill only to realize it’s nothing that you want. Sometimes you must go back down and a find a different path to get to where you’re supposed to go. If you’re like me, you’ve done this many times. However, each time the path gets clearer and the soul becomes stronger. “I had found myself to be lost. The clouds had shifted. I had chosen to fall.” As any artist surely has experienced, there are times when the future seems unknown. The path isn’t always clear. The one thing truly needed is to believe in yourself, which is sometimes the hardest thing to find. Do not let others dictate how you feel about yourself or your art. Rise up to your own standards, not someone else’s. Even the color pink here is used as an act of rebellion. Pink is associated with femininity and is often put down by others as a color. Here I have decided to bring it to the foreground. I have used every pink I have.
