I’ve been having this major art block for a while and have barely lifted a pencil in the past year or so. I am trying to break out of it, but it is hard. So here is a little something different… For the past 3-4 months, I’ve been taking a ceramic class just to try something new. And….. ceramic is hard. I have never touch clay until I took this class and most YouTube videos I have watched, the potters made it look so easy and the clay looked like butter in their hands. That, I realized, is not the case, my hands are weak and the clay is not buttery, but overall, ceramic is fun. And to be honest I probably only like 10% of the stuffs I made, but it is okay because I am a beginner and as a beginner it’s about learning and experimenting. And this might just be a hobby, but it’s a good mental break. Here are all the pieces that I fired yesterday. I have no formal training in pottery. I don't even own a wheel yet. I handbuild all my pieces. But my sir from whom I did a short crash course last year said, you won't learn more until you start firing your own pieces. Kolhapur, unfortunately has no studio potters who would own a proper kiln for glazed firing which I would have used for learning purpose. I was reluctant on buying a kiln as its a big investment and a big commitment for a novice learner like me. I set a few challenges for myself throughout the year to see my commitment and finally bought it last month....!!! And fired this month all that I made. Today, I called my sir and told him that I am now officially a Potter 😊😁✊️ This is the first time ever I see my clay turn into ceramics. So this, I can say is my new born stage products, a little here and there, not too pretty but nurtured in my heart and mind for months. With help from a Korean potter friend at the studio (She saved it from being thrown away), I trimmed it and attached a handmade handle. I will glaze it in coming fall. Oh boy was this quite the labour of love! 💐 The flowers were a spontaneous choice, which made both underglazing and overglazing more tedious, but thankfully they turned out more or less like what I imagined. In retrospect, I should have first separately underglazed the vase body and flowers, then attached the flowers onto the vase. That way after bisque firing, just a simple clear glaze will do.
