Dragged my friends with me to the #nationalmuseumofprehistorytaiwan because I’m a museum nerd. The Taiwan Prehistory Hall lived up to expectations with a well thought through narrative and sensible layout that pulled together information and artefacts from the island’s earliest human habitation, the #Paleolithic Pahsientung site all the way through to the #Neolithic and #IronAge periods. The archaeological evidence is fascinating and the curators have done a great job marshalling the finds into an accessible story, complete with #dioramas that recreate lifestyles of the early peoples of Taiwan. The most amazing items are the #nephrite earrings which show skilled craftsmanship. The cord-marked pottery reminds me of the #jomon people of Japan. The #Austronesian hall unfortunately was a disappointment. Ambitious concept - trying to pull together the story of the links between peoples of #austronesia - but the execution is choppy at best and schizophrenic at worst. Still I appreciated the attempt at #decolonisingthenarrative and giving aboriginal voices space. The #woodwork of artist Suki Sufin was most moving in this respect. The sculpture of the winged soldier references an Atolan Amis people belief that if someone dies far from home, the living can call on ancestors to fit the person’s soul with wings to carry him home to rest. The four panels depict Austronesian soldiers in the military gear of the Japanese, the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party as well as their own traditional regalia, reflecting the generations of colonising powers who have conscripted and/or dragooned the peoples into their wars. The museum is well worth a visit if you’re ever in Taitung!
