WILD THINGS DRAWING CHALLENGE Day 17: Eagle! I drew two eagles for today because I have noticed a drastic change in the past 2.5 weeks with my style, so I wanted to compare. I started with my graphic and bold images, and progressed into more sketchy designs, and now find myself aiming for more depth, shading and realistic features. What a transition! I also see myself playing with new colours and layers in ways I’ve never thought to. For those of you involved in the challenge, what are you noticing?! And please tell me which style you are preferring between the two art pieces I’ve shared! Bald eagles have a wingspan of over 6.5 feet and can live 20 to 30 years in the wild. These birds build some of the largest nests of any bird species with the largest recorded nest being almost 10 feet in diameter and over around 20 feet tall, weighing nearly 2 metric tons (about 4400 pounds). These nests are often reused and expanded over the years, becoming massive structures. They have some of sharpest eyesight in the animal kingdom. Their vision is about four to five times sharper than that of a human with perfect vision, meaning they have 20/4 or 20/5 vision compared to our 20/20 vision, allowing them to see a rabbit from up to 5km away. Here’s the question…..can Ai do a much better job than I can?? First image is mine, took me a couple of hours, the next 8 images are Ai. Swipe to see the results for, “Cute orange monkey with a pink tummy swinging by one arm from a vine on a blue background.” (I asked Canva to make this- the free version not the professional one, which may be the downfall here). The first one is okay, the second one looks cute until you count a total of 6 arms and legs, there’s a couple where a leg morphs weirdly into a tail or branch, and the last one is just unfortunate. When life hurts your dominant hand, draw with the other one! I hated drawing with my left hand when I was younger and told to in art lessons (shhh don't tell but I'd swap hands when the teacher wasn't looking). WILD THINGS DRAWING CHALLENGE Day 16: Elk! Banff National Park has around 140 elk in the area - now, that’s a lot of poop! One particularly notable fact about elk is that during the rutting season, bulls produce a distinctive vocalization known as a “bugle.” This eerie, high-pitched call can be heard over long distances and serves multiple purposes: it establishes dominance, attracts females, and deters rival males. The bugle starts with a low bellow, rises to a high whistle, and often ends with a series of grunts. The complexity and intensity of a bull’s bugle can indicate its size and strength to potential mates and competitors. Elk, like other ruminants, have a specialized digestive system with four compartments in their stomach: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. This complex stomach structure allows them to effectively break down and digest fibrous plant material. “Imperfection is the new perfection!” The other day, I was making this little piece of color study on the paper! However suddenly I felt the urge to leave the piece as how it was and not to complete it! I mean I left the lines exposed and didn’t fill the blocks and just did one layer of coating. The reason behind it was to challenge myself as a perfectionist and as a person who spends lots of time painting the lines perfectly. It was not easy but over the time I found it as beautiful as it was. I decided to add the message “imperfection is the new perfection” to the empty block to remind myself that a creative process is independent of what we define as an aesthetic perfection. Among the approximately 260 bird species recorded in the park, several species of owls can be found, including the Great Horned Owl, which is notable for being Alberta’s provincial bird. Other owl species in Banff include the Northern Pygmy Owl, the Boreal Owl, and the Northern Saw-whet Owl. Can you believe we are halfway through this challenge?!? Today, I learned how to make a zigzag stitch look like a satin stitch. I do have satin stitches on my machine, but they're all shapes, does anyone know why they're shapes? I'm baffled. So faffing with the zigzag stitch it was! Went back over a few spots that I missed, far corners and such. I'm impressed how nice it looks for a first time, though. This technique is one I learned from @shannonebrinkley and is called scrappy applique. I drew the pattern myself. Image Description: A finished scrappy applique piece. WILD THINGS DRAWING CHALLENGE Day 14: Pine Marten! These lil cuties are mostly nocturnal creatures, but if you’re lucky, you may have a chance to see them during the day. They spend their evenings hunting smaller prey, such as rodents, insects, and birds. Pine martens are territorial animals, marking their territories with scent glands to deter intruders and communicate with other martens. The coloration of pine martens’ fur can also change with the seasons. In the summer, their fur may appear lighter, with shades of brown or reddish-brown, while their winter fur tends to be darker, with shades of dark brown or black. These different coats help them regulate temperatures and blend into their surroundings based on the season. WILD THINGS DRAWING CHALLENGE Day 13: Bear! The grizzly bear population in Banff National Park is estimated to be between 60-65 bears. Grizzlys are a threatened species under Canada’s Species at Risk Act, and many efforts are put in place to protect their habitat and minimize human encounters and conflicts. I thought it would be good to share the story of Bear 148, who was a female grizzly bear who gained fame for her bold and curious behaviour in the Bow Valley, whose story has a tragic ending. Despite management efforts, conflicts between Bear 148 and humans persisted. In 2017, after several incidents, including one where she bluff-charged a jogger, she was relocated to a remote area of Alberta. Unfortunately, Bear 148 was shot and killed by a hunter outside the safety zone of Banff National Park soon after her relocation. Her story sparked discussions about human-bear coexistence, wildlife management, and the challenges faced by bears living in increasingly developed areas. Bear 148’s legacy continues to influence conservation efforts and policies aimed at protecting wildlife and their habitats. WILD THINGS DRAWING CHALLENGE Day 12: Wolf! I can really see the progression in my drawings at this stage. I’m spending more time playing with layers and colours and have noticed myself moving away from my more graphic bold drawings into more details sketches. I have always struggled with my colour pallets so it’s been really fun to see more growth here and feel a little more intuitive with my selections. For those of you participating, what are you noticing through this process?? The wolf pack in Banff National Park is one of the most studied packs in the world. The history has shifted from treating them as pests and culling the population, into reintroducing them into parts of the park to restore natural predator vs. prey dynamics. Policies have shifted from predator management into ecosystem-based management, which acknowledges the importance of apex predators. The Banff pack is somewhere between 6-10 wolves, and they are a rare and special sighting in the park.
