I had the best neighbor for almost twenty years. She’s left this earth and today the family held an estate sale. With mixed feelings I went over to see if I could find a small momento. I’ve followed #alisonmartino @alisonmartino and #vintagelosangeles for years and was pretty tickled to find this personally signed vinyl by Alison’s father #almartino. Bet my neighbor never would have guessed I knew who this was.

I grew up (at a young age) in nightclubs, showrooms, and casinos, so it’s no surprise my mom found this snapshot of me taking my first steps at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. Dad was headlining at the time. Louis Prima was also performing there with Sam Butara & the Witnesses at the time. No wonder I was bustin’ to get goin’! Both my grandmothers were there too to witness this, so I guess I needed an audience. 🎰 🎲 Back then, instead of receiving a residency like Elvis, entertainers could book a 3 or 4 week engagement. It was very exciting at the time. Plus The Godfather had just been released. I love my mom’s writing ✍️ on the border of the photo.

Happy 75th birthday to Billy Joel! This photo was taken on his 50th when we all flew out to the Hamptons for his birthday party. Billy is a big GODFATHER / crooner fan and dad was the surprise entertainment that night at his home. I must admit now, (after all these years) that I snuck a small VHS camcorder in my bag to capture some of it. (Need to find it!)

All my life growing up, I would hear my father tell stories about Ciro’s on the Sunset Strip. He always said it was the most glamorous nightclub aside from the Coconut Grove. In 1952, he was asked to perform at Ciro’s. What a dream come true for dad, who happened to have had the number 1 song in the country at the time. He was booked for 2 weeks but opening night didn’t turn out so great…. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis showed up to help generate some press. But what dad thought would be great publicity backfired tremendously. Unfortunately, Dean and Jerry ended up playing a prank on dad that he didn’t appreciate. Right before Dad was supposed to step on the stage, Dean and Jerry tied him to a chair and they went on instead. I’m sure the crowd was happy to see them since they were at the height of their career at that point, but dad missed his opening night because of it. He did go on to play the remainder of his engagement, but he never got over missing his big opening. Years later, Dean apologized but not Jerry never did. It took me YEARS to find an image with his name on the marquee. I finally found this old snapshot from someone’s personal scrapbook they were selling on eBay. Thankfully, I won that auction… If there was one picture I wish I could have shown dad, it would have been this one. BTW, this building still stands today as The World Famous Comedy Store. There’s a lot of Hollywood ghosts in that building.

The Capitol Records Tower opened on this day in 1956. It was Designed by Louis Naidorf of Welton Becket Associates, and is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Construction began soon after British music company EMI acquired Capitol Records in 1955, and was completed in April 1956. It was called “The house that Nat built in honor of Nat King Cole, who had made so much money for the label at that time. And did you know the beeping light of the top spells out H O L L Y W O O D in Morse code? It has done so every night since the building was erected. In fact, Leila Morse, Samuel Morse’ granddaughter flipped the beacon switch. It’s only been altered on rare occasions. So grateful to have so much family history tied to this building. Dad had been attached to the label in 1952! When he left for England in the late 60s, he was re-signed to Capitol when he returned to America in 1963. It’s amazing to think that he was put back on that label the same time the Beatles and The Beach Boys were signed. This is actually his blue Capitol Records satin jacket from the 70s. I also interned here for @omgitsgia in the Artist Services department that my dad helped created in the 60s with Al Cory. This photo was taken right before they invited me to flip the switch on that ancient old power box to turn on their annual Christmas tree. The kitschy Hollywood icon was designed by Ollsen Lighting and features 4,373 bulbs (at 25 watts each), the tree was the first of its kind, and it has been a part of the Hollywood skyline each December since 1958. There is so music history in this tower. I have barely scratched the surface. 1. Taken in the Capitol Parking lot 2. Under construction. Taken from the parking lot across the street on Vine 3. Under construction 4. Completed 5. Capitol Christmas tree 1958 6. Promo showing the Capitol catalog in the early 60s 7. Fun promo featuring capital LPS. (Dad is 3rd row) 8. Dad recording in Studio A 9. Me pulling the Christmas tree switch on top of the Tower 10. One of my favorite photos visiting the Tower in 2015.

Jerry Vale in the 1950s. 🎼 Vale was born Gennaro Louis Vitaliano in the Bronx, New York, to Italian immigrant parents, and grew up in the Wakefield section of the Bronx which at the time was composed mainly of Italian-American families. In high school, to earn money, Vale took a job shining shoes in a barbershop, singing while he worked. His boss, Vito Veneziano, liked the sound so well that he paid for music lessons for the boy. Vale started singing in high school musicals and at a local nightclub. Still a teenager, he left school to work in a factory as an oiler alongside his father. Vale's early nightclub performances led to additional shows in the early 1950s, including one lasting for three years at the Enchanted Room, a club in Yonkers, New York. When Paul Insetta (road manager for singer Guy Mitchell and hit songwriter) heard him there, he signed him to a management contract and further coached him. Insetta arranged for Vale to record some demonstration records of songs he'd written, and he brought them to Columbia Records. Guy Mitchell introduced Vale to Mitch Miller, then head of A&R at Columbia Records. Vale signed a recording contract, with Insetta as his manager for many years to come. Jerry Vale appeared on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour in 1950 singing "It Isn't Fair". Vale's first recording with the Columbia label, with accompaniment by Percy Faith and his band, was "You Can Never Give Me Back My Heart", reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming Vale's first U.S. hit. His version of "The Star-Spangled Banner", recorded in late 1963, was a fixture at many sporting events for years, and the gold record Vale received was displayed at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Vale frequently sang the song at Yankee Stadium. Additionally, he owned the Daytona Beach Admirals. He sang the Late Night with David Letterman anthem "It's A Late Night World" on the program's eighth anniversary special in 1990. He made cameo appearances as himself in the 1990 film Goodfellas and the 1995 film Casino, both directed by Martin Scorsese. #tonybennett #franksinatra #deanmartin #jerryvale #almartino #perrycomo #crooner #jazz #bigband

Vic Damone in 1947 at the age of 19. 🎼 Born Vito Rocco Farinola on June 12, 1928 in Brooklyn to an Italian-American family. He was raised Roman Catholic and grew up listening to Russ Columbo and Perry Como. Damone met Perry Como while at the Paramount Theater in 1946. Damone stopped the elevator between floors and sang for him. Como was impressed and referred him to a friend for an audition. He began his career at the New York radio station WHN when he was 17, singing on the Gloom Dodgers show, which provided light entertainment to fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He changed his name at the suggestion of a regular on the show, comedian Morey Amsterdam. Damone entered the talent search on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and won in April 1947. This led to his becoming a regular on Godfrey's show. He met Milton Berle at the studio and Berle got him work at two night clubs. By mid-1947, Damone had signed a contract with Mercury Records. His first release, "I Have But One Heart", reached number seven on the Billboard chart. "You Do" reached the same peak. These were followed by a number of other hits. In 1948, he got his own weekly radio show, Saturday Night Serenade. In 1967, Damone hosted The Dean Martin Summer Show. In 1972, Damone was offered the role of Johnny Fontane in The Godfather after singer Al Martino, who had previously been given the role by producer Albert S. Ruddy, had the part stripped when Francis Ford Coppola became director and wanted Damone to portray Fontane. Coppola was later "Convinced" by mafia boss Russel Bufalino to let Al Martino play Fontaine. Damone claimed he had been held dangling out of a window of a New York hotel by a "thug". Damone claimed he had been engaged to the thug's daughter, but ended the relationship when she insulted Damone's mother. He wrote that his life was spared when, during a Mafia meeting to determine the singer's fate, New York mob boss Frank Costello ruled in Damone's favor. He was married to the beautiful Pier Angeli from 1954 to 1958 and they had one son named Perry after Perry Como. #tonybennett #franksinatra #deanmartin #jerryvale #almartino #perrycomo #crooner #jazz #bigband #bigbandjazz #50s #1950s #50smusic

"Prisoner of Love" is a standard that has been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Art Tatum, Perry Como, the Ink Spots, Mildred Bailey, Tiny Tim, Teddy Wilson with Lena Horne on vocals, Bing Crosby, Billy Eckstine, and James Brown. Perry Como had a number-one hit on Billboard with his recording. On September 2, 1934 he was shot and killed at the age of 26 and would go down in history as the first Italian-American Crooner and inspired the likes of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Jerry Vale and others. In 1958, Jerry Vale recorded a tribute album titled I Remember Russ. His song "Prisoner of Love" was featured in the 1980 Martin Scorsese film Raging Bull. #tonybennett #franksinatra #deanmartin #jerryvale #almartino #perrycomo #crooner #jazz #bigband #bigbandjazz #50s #1950s #50smusic #40s #1940s #40smusic #jazzmusic #jimmyroselli #oldhollywood #vegas #lasvegas #copacabana #saloonsinger #crooners #goldenageofhollywood

Al Martino (born Jasper Cini; October 7, 1927 – October 13, 2009) was an American traditional pop and jazz singer. He had his greatest success as a singer between the early 1950s and mid-1970s, being described as “one of the great Italian American pop crooners”,and also became known as an actor, particularly for his role as singer Johnny Fontane in The Godfather.Jasper Cini was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The name Jasper was an anglicisation of his father’s name, Gasparino. His parents were immigrants from the region of Abruzzo, in the town of Nereto, Italy, who ran a construction business. While growing up, he worked alongside his brothers, Pasquale and Francis as a bricklayer. He aspired to become a singer, emulating artists such as Al Jolson and Perry Como, and by the success of a family friend, Alfredo Cocozza, who had changed his name to Mario Lanza.Apart from singing, Martino played the role of Johnny Fontane in the 1972 film The Godfather, as well as singing the film’s theme, “Speak Softly Love”. Martino had been told about the character by a friend who had read the eponymous novel and felt Martino represented the character of Johnny Fontane. He played the same role in The Godfather Part III and The Godfather Trilogy: 1901–1980 (the television miniseries that combines The Godfather and The Godfather Part II into one film). Martino later returned to acting, playing aging crooner Sal Stevens in the short film Cutout, which appeared in film festivals around the world in 2006. #almartino #italianamericansinger #italianamericanactor #jaspercini #italianamericanactors

This was my dad’s apartment on Orchid Ave. in Hollywood. He lived in the bottom right unit with restaurant visionary, Nicky Blair. They each paid $27 a month back in 1953. Just one year after dad’s first #1 single was released. Occasionally Guy Mitchell would stay with them and help out. What a crew! This old world apartment building is called “The Graybrook” and this entire block is filled with these historic charming structures. Check them out sometime. The street is directly behind the Hollywood and Highland Mall. When I first posted a photo of this a few years back, someone who actually lives here today sent me the interior photos. That was the door leading to their place. It had previously been a hotel in the ‘40’s which explains the check-in window. They would take your information and hand you a key. It failed as a hotel and became an apartment building in 1947. Some of the units still have their murphy beds! I believe these apts and the ones surrounding have been declared historical landmarks. Developers have tried many times over the past 15 years to buy them all so they could tear them down and build condos, but thankfully the owners have refused all offers even when they were double the market value. It’s a miracle they survived the construction of the Hollywood & Highland mall. It’s now a dead end street as a result. It changed the whole area, not to mention took half the street. My favorite memories are of dad taking me by this place and telling me stories about living here. They used to wear dapper suits and walk HOLLYWOOD Blvd all the way to Gower and back. He described how glamorous everyone dressed. I was overwhelmed seeing this for the first time after dad suddenly passed in 2009. As I sat in my car looking at it, a flock of birds whisked by and sat on the roof top for several minutes. It was very moving. A few years ago when I met up with Robert, (the person who lives there today) he generously gave me the original plaque from the all-in-one- kitchenette cabinet dad used to cook on. I can only imagine the meals they made. Especially knowing Nicky went on to open all of those successful restaurants. A gift to cherish.
