"Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion...." (Ecclesiastes 4:9,10 NKJV) On our trip home from Gatlinburg this week, we stopped at an old steakhouse in a little Virginia town. On the walk to our table, we passed two older ladies, each at separate tables, eating alone.... Now, I'll say, sometimes my husband & I are a little sad at being on the verge of an empty nest. We have one who's been on his own for a couple years, living just across the river in a home he purchased. And our youngest moved out over a year ago & boomeranged back home recently for a reset.😉 But these ladies in the restaurant were up in age, their hair silvered & faces folded in downward expressions. I imagine them to have grown grandbabies--maybe even "greats." They each looked at us when we passed with a glimmer of remembrance of happier times: dining with their spouses, maybe thoughts of shared inside jokes. As a family grows larger & larger, it's a backwards concept to be more lonely. It's a good reminder-- to hold our friends close, to keep in contact with family (even if you always make the calls), to stay busy, volunteer, walk in your neighborhood & chat with your neighbors. And, most of all, to simply...love one another. As John 13:34 so gently reminds us, "Just as I have loved you, so you too are to love one another." (AMP) Solitude can be a gift, a time for experiencing arts, music, books...and, most of all, a deeper companionship with God. But let us live in an attitude & behavior of love toward one another in the world. (Isaiah 41:10) Sometimes I forget how incredibly blessed I am! Mother's Day was joyful, peaceful, full of life & family. All the things so many didn't have yesterday. And that puts me in mind of the difficult times I've traveled-- when it felt lonely & forsaken, when days were more for getting through than enjoying, when life was...hard. I know many of you are there now. I'm sorry for that. But one thing I can say is that God is faithful. Looking in the rearview on the other side of the pain, I can see it. I see how He comforted, how He was working when I didn't know it, how He...held me. And trust me, He's holding you too. When I was on the difficult journey, I couldn't forsee happy days like the one in the photo. A new time where everything was "fixed." But it came. And yours will too. He promises to love you, to be faithful, to help you. Faith & endurance are your tools for breakdowns along the way. There ARE glorious days ahead for you. Just keep letting God do the driving. "I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you." (2 Timothy 1:5) When I was about twenty years old I asked my mom for a large paperback book called All of the Women of the Bible. It's been a treasured read of mine for many years. There's something encouraging about knowing their stories, their trials & seeing their triumphs. The Old Testament speaks about eighty-four moms. Did you know that?! Not just women; but, specifically mothers. I believe God planted something unique and wonderful in mama hearts. There's something in them that sees way beyond themselves into the lives they're rearing or influencing. And Godly mamas...well they are especially golden. They're Truth bearers, Scripture instillers, faith builders in our years. This Mother's Day will be filled with celebration & love. I want our hearts & spirits to be wholly holy--clean & sanctified, pure. This world is so dark. It desperately needs crystal clear vessels to share the light of God's Truth with them. I want our spirits to be in alignment with His, to be full of His Word & in a right attitude to share it in the best way with our environment. Hebrews 10:24 reminds us, “let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works...." "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!" (1 John 3:1 NKJV) Parents can embarrass you sometimes. We love to tell stories about J.D., as a toddler, pretending to be Blue Man Group or about him showing his muscles to our friends & asking if they want a piece of "meat"("me!")😅. What he probably doesn't understand yet is just how incredibly precious those memories are to our hearts. We're still getting used to the routine of being parents of adults. But I want us to make him proud. I want us to live in a way that makes him honored to be our son. But more than anything, I want him to be filled with honor to be God's son. Yes, living for God can make you stand out in ways that are uncomfortable sometimes. But it's that very influence that is dear to God's heart. To let Christ be seen in our everyday life is courageous. But the challenge can be life-changing for those around us. "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" (1 John 3:1) I got up this morning to see that my husband had left all I needed for a hot tea atop our water dispenser in the living room. It paused me for a moment. He had told me last night what he'd done. But, honestly, I wasn't interested in a tea at the time. (I already had a diet cola.) So, I just gave him a cursory thanks & didn't think anymore about it. At least, not until I drug my tired self out of bed today. I saw the cup & began to routinely & mindlessly reach to make the tea. And then I saw it...my husband's expression of love. He had prepared it for me ahead of time, because he knew how much I love Lemon Lift. It's like those God moments He gives us unexpectedly throughout the day that I love so much. It gives me all the feels when I'm blessed to catch a moment in time like the iridescent clouds causing a linear rainbow that stretched horizontally across the sky a couple evenings ago. We could have driven right on across the bridge; but, God drew my eyes to His expression of love above us. And my heart soared.... Don't let those moments pass without soaking in His glory. “Therefore, tell the exiles, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Although I have scattered you in the countries of the world, I will be a sanctuary to you during your time in exile." (Ezekiel 11:16 NLT‬) What love! Like a faithful earthly father, He had warned, scolded, allowed consequences...yet never left their side. He had their backs, showed overwhelming compassion. The Judean inhabitants had repeatedly strayed from their relationship with the Lord, choosing instead to worship pagan idols. At last, in an attempt to draw them back into right relationship, God allowed them to be overtaken by the Babylonians. They endured the consequence of exile, servanthood & the struggle of trying to regain their homeland. But amidst all this, God says these beautiful words, "I will be a sanctuary to you during exile." During times of repercussion or trial, you won't be abandoned. God will be your sanctuary. He is our safety, a hiding spot, a sacred place in the midst of turmoil. When you're going through the most difficult times of your life, remember HE is your place to run to from the attacks. They may frighten you, bring chaos, trip up your well-laid plans; but, they will not destroy you. (1 John 4:16 NIV) My son gave me a bird feeder with a viewing camera on it for Christmas. I waited until Spring came to put it out. So now I'm enjoying seeing all the little feathered friends in my yard. My phone receives a silent notification whenever a visitor comes to feed. Let me tell you: this gift makes my heart happy.☺️ It brings back memories of bird watching with J.D. when he was little. We always fed the cardinals black safflower seed, especially in the winter. I can remember moments, sitting in the family room floor, when he would chime happily, "Let's birdwatch Mommy!" And he'd gently nudge my shoulder toward the carpet. Then we'd lay there pointing out imaginary birds to each other in the ceiling area. Thinking of those times makes my heart swell.... As a 24-year-old, he knows Mama's heart. He's the best gift-giver. But the best gift he EVER gave me was simply being my son. What a blessing! And I know somehow that's how God looks at us. He gives us the heavens & all that fills them for our enjoyment. And He lets us see His reflection in creation. I'm sure it makes His heart happy for us to find pleasure in the beauty of the works of His hands. But I'm even more confident that our coming to Him, spending time with Him, makes His heart swell. His desire is relationship with us, closeness, intimacy in quiet times spent together. I believe commas in our day, creating a connection with God, are His favorites. "Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan." (Ephesians 1:11 NLT) My dad left me an inheritance. As a train engineer for over forty years, he was frugal, saved back, spent wisely. So, I've tried to use what he left me with great discretion. I paid off the building our business is housed in. And I paid the balance of a piece of equipment we owed on. Both ended a payment, and more importantly, interest charges. My thing is to remind myself that I didn't earn this money. It was Dad's effort and time that amassed the funds to be able to do something good for our family. I was simply blessed. This Sunday, our morning preacher spoke about our inheritance as God's children. No, it's not finances or houses or any physical earthly thing. Our inheritance is His redemption, eternal life, a birthright that lets us see His power & miracles in the world. And just like my daddy, Christ paid the cost. It was His effort in going to the cross that gave me a spiritual inheritance in this life. I didn't earn it. I didn't deserve it. "To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." (Luke 1:79) I remember when GPS had just become a thing & a friend used it to lead our families to Myrtle Beach. I was amazed that this little rectangular screen not only knew where we were; but, could show us how to get anywhere we wanted. It kept us on the right path for the long 500-mile trip to our destination. This morning, I was studying about being sold out to God & walking the narrow road. What does it mean to walk the narrow road? My take: not to step out of line with God's Word. Paul taught us that we need to run the race (1st Corinthians 9:24), finish the course (2 Timothy 4:7). Races have marked, measured lanes for the runner to stay between to get them to the finish line without disqualification. In life, if we take just one step to the left to reach for something that's a temptation, it changes our course. Yes, there's forgiveness. But the point is that the path God has given us is the one that leads us safely to eternity in Heaven. It's precise enough to keep temptations at bay; yet, wide enough to take souls with us on our journey. Scripture is our guide to what's good and bad, right & wrong, evil & Godly. Yes, sometimes I'm still amazed that this little rectangular God Positioning Scripture has all the answers I'll ever need. "Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10) 4600. That's how many Jews were exiled into Babylonian captivity JUST in Jeremiah 52. God doesn't take rebelling against His Law lightly. And it's not without consequences. It's the opposite of humility before the Lord. Chapter fifteen of first Samuel even creates a simile between rebellion...and the sin of witchcraft! Yes, He's merciful & long-suffering; but, like a good parent, His patience wears thinner. Eventually, consequences ensue. Not always necessarily for pure punishment's sake; but, because it draws us back to the One who loves & protects us. The One we need! Maybe you've strayed today. Perhaps your life hasn't been glorifying God. You might even be in all-out rebellion as you read this. Yes. Life is a resounding YES. In one song I wrote back in the winter, I said “I made this life a garden of sweet salvation. I made this life what happens when you try…” And I mean try for yourself. "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.' (Galatians 2:20 NKJV) Butterflies can’t fly if it’s too cold.  So, when temperatures drop, they're unable to gather nectar for eating or escape from predators.  They have to "sun" to warm & give new life to the flight muscles in their wings. Just like these fragile winged creatures that are beginning to make their Spring appearance, we are in need of a life source to fuel our spiritual muscles.  When we stray too far from the presence of the Son, we'll find life more difficult.  In weak times, we refrain from eating His Word like we should & the enemy has an easier time keeping us grounded.  So, warm yourself this Easter in the presence of Jesus. "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." (James 5:16 NLT) Are you praying for someone today? Have they been embedded & laying on your heart for a while? Maybe they need salvation, deliverance from addiction, or to make a drastic life change. Our prayers can go much farther when we learn to pray effectively.... We can't pray for something that overrides another's life choice. God gives us each the free will whether to choose to live for Him. In other words, if we pray, "Save (some particular person), He isn't going to just make that happen... because THEY have a choice over their own life. A more effective prayer would sound like, ..."Lord convict their heart." ..."Show them Your love." ..."Let them see their need for you." ..."Remind them of Your Word." ..."Send someone to witness to them." Such prayers are specific things we can expect God to respond to!😀 Suddenly the situation doesn't seem so futile--because we KNOW God is faithful to answer prayers within His will. So, we KNOW He's moving in their life. To pray an effective prayer brings peace. So call out deliverance. Ask God to reveal Himself to them & show them a better way. Pray that situations arise that causes toxic influencers to be removed. Keep praying effective prayers with faith! We can go our whole lives relatively unscathed, generally joyful. And then a tragedy happens that changes the trajectory of our circumstances- maybe forever. "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1 NIV) The exhaust vent that spins on the top of our house has become a little off kilter.  One day last week the wind was raging wildly. So the metal turbine made a sudden loud crashing noise that continued for several seconds. Our youngest's eyes darted up fearfully as he quickly questioned, "What IS that?!" I have to admit, it did sound like something had crash landed in our yard.😂 I assured him it was only our damaged roof turbine working overtime. It took a moment to convince him; but, his fears were allayed by my assurance.  I feel like our lives are like that turbine at times.  When all is well, the wind blows through the blades smoothly & unnoticed. But when we begin to let things get off kilter in our lives, the raging gusts of the enemy have more effect. We're not as equipped to handle his sudden blasts of attack on our lives. And the rattling can leave us fearful & disheveled.  But rest assured, God is only a breath away--even in our drifting. I heard this beautiful New Living Translation of Psalm 23 on my audio devotion this morning. I've read this chapter hundreds of times; but, this particular translation spoke so clearly & gently to my soul that I had to share with all of you today. There's something about hearing "Adonai ro-i, lo echsar." ("The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.") in the affirmation "The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need." Because, truly, through Him we ARE...fulfilled. And then in verse three we read, "He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name." What a thought that the way we walk in this world would bring honor...to Him! Then there's the Promise & reassurance of verse four, that He will be close beside us in every fearful circumstance. And in the final verse we're reminded, "Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life...." We are PURSUED by the creator of the universe! He loves us, desires us, finds delight in our presence. They had made an enemy of him to the people. In fact, they mocked & threatened Jeremiah daily. Our enemies may look more like loved ones or coworkers or neighbors, people who have sued us, or a myriad of others. But regardless of your battle, Jeremiah's words hold true for you as well. My family & I have been teaching our little g-baby this familiar mealtime prayer. She's three & is all smiles when we get to, "Amen!" (At which she throws her hands up into the air & looks like she's as proud as can be.) She's learning the importance of prayer, of gratitude, of faith. And I couldn't be happier. There will be many times in her life when she will need to know that God is the Rock & Shelter that she can run to. For her to have true peace in her spirit at all, will require a relationship with the Almighty. And acknowledging Him as the Savior & sovereign authority of her soul...priceless. Let's remember today how important prayer is to each one of our lives. The struggles of life don't have to be overwhelming. We serve a God who loves us as His child. Through the years we've learned to trust Him--first for small things, & over time, for greater needs. "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." (Psalm 1:3) Judah wilts.... It was talking about the condition of the area since God had held back the rain. They sent for water; but, all the wells were dry. They had wandered away from the Lord--from their source of both physical & spiritual water. Yes, they were wilting.... Psalm chapter one compares a faithful Christian to a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth fruit & whose leaf doesn't wither. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights...." (James 1:17) I was shell-hunting for a special "little person" back home. She loves to go through the sandpail of treasures we've accumulated from past beach trips. So, since this was our first trip to Daytona, I thought I'd pick up some pretty gems from the shore for her. I had walked quite a ways down from the hotel, with my eyes peeled on the sand & it's thousands of clam shells. When I finally raised my head, I saw the beautiful expanse of ocean crashing toward the coastline. It was overwhelming. I had been so focused on trying to find the prettiest shells amongst all of them strewn along the shoreline--so focused that I was totally missing the massive beauty literally calling out & racing toward me. How many times we do this in life! We're looking for what we consider the desired things in the dirt & normalcy of the world, when the true beauty & blessings are poured out from above. We look for love. We try to make our own way. We decide what is good to run after. But God knows best. He knows what we need, what will prosper us, the things that will bring us true joy. Trust His judgment. Seek His will. Live a life that lets His light & blessings in.
