🎨 Ediacaran Rangeomorph community 🇬🇧 Very happy to finally share these pieces! This is how the ocean floor might have looked during the Ediacaran Period, some 550 million years ago: extensive marine forests dominated by sessile, fractally-growing, filter-feeding organisms named rangeomorphs (three genera in this scene: Bradgatia, Fractofusus, and Pectinifrons, see ahead). Despite their seemingly unassuming appearance, these organisms and their impact on the flow of water during their ceaseless feeding activity might have played a pivotal role in structuring these first marine ecosystems and driving the explosion of animal life. A recent figure I did on asthma with the UC Riverside Center for Health Disparities Research. They've created a community forum where they explain their studies on the Salton Sea in California and the impact it and its surrounding environment has on the people living nearby. Asthma is a respiratory disease characterized by the narrowing of lung airways due to swelling, inflammation, and excess mucus. It's actually more prevelent in children given their narrow airways compared to adults, any restriction is more pronounced. I learn so much during each project! 🏆 3rd Place in the 2024 #ScienceWithoutBorders Challenge (15-19 age group): 🎨 “Look Into The Light” by Jiayi (Jenny) Xu, Age 15, United States of America 🖌️ Artist's Statement: For this painting I created an ominous, frontal composition of an angler fish luring its surrounding creatures such as mantis shrimps and squid. I imagined what it must be like to live in an environment with the absence of light that’s filled with danger lurking in every corner. The bioluminescent lure of the angler fish creates light where there is none, becoming a transcendent object of otherworldly admiration/impending doom for those that become hypnotized by its wonder. The scene is emphasized by the hydrothermal vent and the imagined light rings that would both blind and captivate the unsuspecting prey. I also recently stumbled upon brand new discoveries of previously unknown species in the abyssopelagic zone under the sea as well as in Chile that I incorporated into my piece. 🏆 2nd Place in the 2024 #ScienceWithoutBorders Challenge (15-19 age group): 🎨 “Under the Sea” by Nadia Cho, Age 16, United States of America 🖌️ Artist's Statement: In the bathyapelagic zone, tubeworms rest around hydrothermal vents. These tubeworms may seem a little grotesque by their mass numbers, but they are important for the surrounding life by the hydrothermal vents. The tubeworms have a symbiotic relationship with chemosynthetic bacteria inside their body. As the tubeworms transfer hydrogen sulfide from the vent water, the bacteria converts the hydrogen sulfide to food that the tube worm can eat. Since there are many tubworms, it provides a perfect shield to the Zoarcid fish who seek shelter from predators in the deep. Although the tubeworms may provide safety for a few species, they reminded me of the corals in coral reefs and how they provide the same thing for many different species. Hence why I illustrated the type of ecosystem the tubeworms live in and emphasize the beauty of its ecosystem. #SciArt #ArtContest #OceanLiteracy #DeepSea

Happy #SlimeMoldSunday folks! In April I went to northern Tasmania for a week, very specifically to meet and spend time with the wonderful slime mold researcher @sarah.lloyd.tasmania. When I found my first myxo about six years ago, I went online to learn more about them. At that time the best information I could find was Sarah's website (see the link in the first comment below). I sent her an email asking some questions, to which she very kindly and thoroughly replied. We have been in frequent communication ever since, and so of course I wanted to meet her and see her forest. I was delighted to spend several days with Sarah and her partner Ron in the large remote forest in northern Tasmania where they have built their home. Sarah and Ron live "off the grid," in buildings they have created with local materials, using solar power and spring water, and with fruits and vegetables from their large gardens. It was such a treat to spend so much time with Sarah, to see the places that she mentions in her books and posts, to see her collections, to watch her do microscopy for species ID, and to share the wonderful meals that she made, including homemade bread fresh from the outdoor oven. Best of all, we walked through the forest and she showed me her favorite areas for finding myxos, especially "Big Tree Track," along which she has found many myxos. It was so much fun to walk around the forest with Sarah and see all of the places she has posted and written about! They were in the midst of a drought when I was there, so there were no fresh myxos, but Sarah had a twig with some beautiful Lamproderma echinulatum, shown in the first photo. The second photo shows Sarah and me next to the "Big Tree", a large downed old growth eucalyptus. Many thanks to Sarah for being so generous with her time and knowledge! Transmissible Venereal Tumor, Veterinary Cytology – Round Cell Extravaganza (2024) 🖼 Transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) is a very fascinating neoplasm as it is one of the very few transmissible tumors described in mammals. 🐶 TVT likely originated thousands of years ago in a single dog and behaves like a parasitic organism, persisting and spreading through populations across continents and over generations. 🔬From a cytology standpoint, TVT cells appear as discrete elements with characteristic, well-defined clear vacuoles, often aligned along cell borders. 🧑🎨 To paint these vacuoles it’s important to remember that with watercolors you always have to plan ahead because you paint from light to dark. I am reading this book (by Kimberly Nicholas, PhD) and suddenly I discover a page with Dr Genevieve Metson's research on recycled nutrients. Gen, the researcher I collaborated with in my latest Art&Science project! So honored! The book is an important source of inspiration and a model for a climate walk that I am working on. The decorations on the skeleton present the beauty of life. However, under the gorgeous skeleton, there’s tons of trashes and plastic objects, creating a strong contrast. As sea pollution is increasing, life is even more difficult for the deep sea animals due to the lack of foods. Only depending on a whale fall cannot support the survival of all deep sea creatures. Therefore, they decide to transfer the hope from depending on a whale fall to saving themselves on their own. The plastic tie around every creatures’ neck alerts them of this disaster, also reminding them to fight together. Throwback to a Science Art piece This artwork depicts the focus of Dr Debojyoti Chakraborty's research group at CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in a Mandala form, with individual elements inspired by the Madhubani style of Indian folk art. The centre is the interaction between a short CRISPR-RNA (in red) and an unravelled genomic DNA strand (in black), orchestrated by a Cas9 protein (striped). Concentric layers surrounding this core show the long double stranded DNA and then the various forms of single stranded RNA with protein molecules interspersed throughout. These key cellular players are encased in a simplified and stylized version of the lipid bilayer. Dear Readers, What do these images make you think of? 🌌🌃🔭🌉 They’re actually microscopic images at 20x magnification of one of my cell experiments. 🧪🧫🔬💻 I often grow cells in Petri dishes then stain them with fluorescent dyes. In this experiment, I tested whether 4% PFA (paraformaldehyde) treatment before or after staining would affect the outcome. Based on previous experiments, I hypothesized that pre-treatment of the cells with 4% PFA would result in 1 - better retained cell density and 2 - preserve the cell shape. It's pretty ugly which name is anglerfish. It lives in a dark world where the sun is completely out of reach, where the water depth is more than 1,000 meters and its eyes have degenerated and shrunk.The food falls from the sea becomes less and less, it has evolved a huge mouth in order not to miss the scarce food. It uses sensitive hair on its body to sense the flow velocity of surrounding water. It has a long bait ball on its head, which emits a faint glow in the darkness and lures prey, when it feels the prey approaching, it immediately opens its huge mouth to suck in the prey with the seawater. It’s apparently a rather confusing inclusion that fails to give us a sense of Alice’s height (if that was even its purpose 😅).
