After a dreary week in NJ, NICA NJ was gifted a beautiful spring day for NICA Race #3 at Stephens. Donna supported as AM marshal hospitality, bringing stationary marshals located at various points along the course snacks, bug spray and other miscellaneous requests. In the afternoon Jeff and Serena supported as roving marshals, ensuring athletes were safe and following appropriate race etiquette. While not in their volunteer position, Donna, Serena and Jeff all supported the Riptide Warriors as coaches, ensuring athletes were prepped, staged, and received at the finish line. Matt DeFelice was in charge of a fantastic skills zone and Teresa was a stand in coach in charge of team operations in Serena’s absence while she was marshaling. Over 400 athletes participated and it felt great to be a part of it all. Congrats to our riders for having a fantastic day in the perspective teams. A few months ago, I signed up for my first 5k to support our local brewery @screaminhillfarmbrewery . The hardest part of today was refraining from running so I could heal and get back to cycling. May 15th 2024 Clayton Park Trail Maintenance What was once a boring, eroded fall line off the back side of Toboggan Hill on old forge trail is now a beautiful flowing sustainable trail thanks in part from the hard work put in by the team this evening. Less than ideal weather didn’t detour productivity. Finishing touches were applied to this flowy partial reroute and the old trail was reclaimed so that nature can run its course while preventing wash out where the old and new trails merge. "One of the neatest thing about gravel riding is discovering special out of the way places & things that you’d never run across on a road ride. Once on a Murder Creek ride we had to swerve through a large posse of Guinea Pigs! I’ve had numerous interactions with bears (up north) and an enormous bull (in BC, Canada). Today, at the Okelika Okey Dokey Gravel GF it was discovering a Kangaroo, in Alabama, living with a goat! I tried to get a selfie with him, but he suddenly got the zoomies and was too fast to grab a picture! "Gravel Roll” hosts some really nice rides, albeit they are only segment rides (not my favorite), but then I wouldn’t found the Roo! We had lots of Sorella club and race team members riding today, please pardon if I missed anyone, and we dominated the leaderboards! Event: On the Rocks @ French Creek Location: Elverson, PA Date: 11-May-2024 Starting the morning off early @French Creek were the Endurance riders. They were met with some slick and slippery trail conditions from the rain the night before. It had become quickly apparent that the race would become survival from flatting out with the rocks. The race had progressed through the morning into the early afternoon, and more and more racers had succumbed to sidewall tears and some sort of tire issue. However, the course slowly began to tack up and was not as sloppy as it was in the morning. We finished the day off with our Pro/Cat 1 riders. There were smiles to be had everywhere and also some disappointments. Overall, everyone in attendance had a great time & those riders who didn't make it were missed. No matter how good or bad we did, we had the support of each other, and that is irreplaceable. Great work to everyone!! It was muggy but luck was on our side and we ended up without a single drop of rain for the race. I was pushing where I needed to and adequately recovering, I was well fueled and also had some much needed plain water on hand because it was super muggy out, I felt so strong and ready for this race, and the rain had held off. I was playing cat and mouse with another girl the whole time right up until the end, and even ended up pulling a guy along for a good portion of the first half of the race. Mile 30 was where everything unraveled. It was on a descent, right where the gravel turned to pavement and coming around a tight corner. I took it a touch too fast and my back wheel slid out on some of the gravel that was on the road, down I went, skidding my whole right ride across the pavement. I laid there with pain searing through by body, and eventually was able to slow my breathing and get up. My calf was aching and my whole right side covered in blood and grit. I walked down to a spot to remount my bike. 18 miles left, just 18 miles, I can finish this right? It was the toughest 18 miles, so much washboard on the gravel made every bump send searing pain through my arm, my rear derailleur took the brunt of the impact and shifting into my climbing gears was not going well. I hit a point and cried but kept on pushing. It was tough passing the last aid station and not stopping but I wasn’t going to let this keep me from finishing the race. I made sure to leave it all out there, pushing down the last stretch of Main Street for a fast finish. 4th female 19-39. Today was not my day but I’m proud of myself for pushing through the pain and finishing a tough race. Today is the Bike the Banks 2024 and 363 days since the crash last year. So glad that @blackmetalbike and I are still here to tell the story! This has been worse than anyone could have ever imagined but we are both still recovering and figuring things out. The amount of support this past year has been amazing including the best patch! I wear my checkered socks today as I have had a lot of victories this past year and am looking forward to more on this long road to recovery. Event Name: Clayton Park Trail Maintenance Location: Clayton Park, Imlaystown NJ Date: May 1 2024 (also Eve's birthday!) Volunteers: Matt D, Serena, JT, Faith, Grace, Eve, Joel, Matt R, + 10 friends From Matt- With a larger than expected turnout, we split into three groups organized by Matt D, thanks to the help of his experienced volunteers Joe (Purl) and Jason to help lead. We hiked in and worked on multiple sections of Bridges Trail. Re-routing trails is an iterative process that requires slight adjustments as the Trails Lead evaluates rainwater flow, tread compaction, and many factors as the new trail gets used. We put the finishing touches on a few new turns to smooth the tread for better water runoff, added outsope to some new trail sections where the center tread has compacted from use, and increased the size of a grade reversal to prevent water from making it down the re-route. Grace also branched off with a small crew to trim back "face slappers" down by the lake. Event: Quantico Epic Location: Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA Date:04/27/2024 Riders: Christine, Donna, Sean From Sean - The week leading up to this ride, the weather was looking excellent. Then, on the day of the ride, the skies opened up. It was not a ton of rain, but it was enough to make everything that much more technical. This ride has everything you'd ever want in a mountain bike ride - short punchy climbs, long climbs that never seem to end, and awesome flowing single track. The allure of this ride to me is that, normally, civilians can not ride on base during regular business. So, being able to ride in places that have helped train the men and women in the United States Marine Corps is a privilege that I do not take lightly. Even though the conditions were less than stellar, everyone kept their bikes upright and got to ride some amazing trails and see some incredible views.
