🚶The living crisis in Australia continues, and is affecting all different walks of life, with the exception of the elite of course, who are thriving! 📖 Often when hearing about the crises we think of the single mothers, struggling families all dealing with the consequences this man made crisis imparts on them. This is terrible of course, but we often forget about our future, the children and students who are trying to get a quality education, those who are supposed to support and lead the next generation of South Australians. 🏠In addition to having to juggle study and unpaid placements these students have to find a place to live in a city where the median rent is $565 a week, and only has a vacancy rate of 0.3%! 🛋️Some students have been couch surfing from lounge to lounge across Adelaide as shared accommodation falls apart. The living costs, even on the "cheaper end" can be enormous, with one "Not for profit" student facility in North Adelaide charging $500 a week for a room plus lodgings! This is simply out of the price range any student that does not have the support of "successful parents" behind them. 🧑🏫Education should not be a luxury, a commodity to be bought and sold for the more "successful families" but a right for all young Australians. This #diaversary is possible because of the advocacy, determination and ❤️ of thousands of people who have worked tirelessly - and who continue to work tirelessly - to support universal global access to insulin, diabetes technology and care. It’s possible because of insulin, the technology that gets it into my body, the monitoring technology that alerts me of life-threatening medical situations, and the privilege of access. It’s also possible thanks to the love, support and joy of family, F(r)am, friends, colleagues, and diverse communities of rad humans living with diabetes (all types)! 💙 I have had 8 years, 2,920 days, 70,080 hours & 4,204,800 minutes of life, experiences, joys, sorrows, love, loss, and all things in-between since my diagnosis with Type 1 Diabetes in 2016. I’m grateful for every moment. Each is hard-won. Make no mistake, being a proxy pancreas 24/7 is absolutely unrelenting. If it seems navigable, it’s because people living with T1D are doing the hard work of showing up and making it seem that way with our grace and grit - often masking the heavy tolls it takes and the work it involves for the sake of others’ comfort, for our job security, for our schooling and for countless other things that are jeopardized by disclosure, ableism and diabetes stigma. 💙 I’ve taken approximately 3,282 injections, changed my insulin pump infusion sites around 1,186 times & done around 23,360 finger sticks to check my blood sugar and keep myself alive over the last 8 years. These are conservative estimates. For folks who say “I couldn’t give myself a needle!” - well, when the other option is death, let’s just say you figure that s$&t out real quick and try to get on with the business of living. 💙 The amazing work of both individuals and communities continues in order to achieve #access4all. Happy Friday - what a week! Fantastic to see so many people - so many smiles! We're getting ready for Cafe Inc - 1-12th April, we are working with Fife council on this one to make sure nobody goes hungry, it is a fantastic initiative and we look forward to seeing everyone! Tea & Tots is here this morning and then we will be putting the lego out and MarioKart on..... its nice and dry and lots of fun! Dear All, Join me and support SB24-159. Today I will be giving testimony for a very important bill SB24-159 - Modification to Carbon Management process - Cease the issuance of new oil and gas permits after Jan 1 2030 by the ECMC - Energy and Carbon Management Commission will be heard today before the Agricultural and Natural Resources committee. You might have seen some ads on the TV too against this bill by the oil and gas industry. For a long time, since 2019, I've been fighting through advocacy and policy changes - meeting and discussing and with the ECMC, #EnergyAndCarbonMabagementCommission, (then called COGCC - Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission) on various oil and gas industry's practices. In Dec 2020, when I was 9 years old, during Mission Change Rulemaking - the ECMC/COGCC adopted as rules my suggestions to protect ground, surface and storm water conservation. It was a big win for all, the ecosystems and myself. I've been working with ECMC on Cumulative Impacts and Produced water rule-making by meeting with them one-on-one and also giving testimonies in 2023 and 2024. I gave testimony before Arapahoe County Commissioners against the 160 wells that are planned in Aurora and even said at that time that no new wells must be permitted in Colorado as they will further destroy our already burdened/polluted air, water, soil, forests etc. and our health and that of flora and fauna. Now, #SB24-159 aims to achieve this. HUGE NEWS: On Friday a federal judge in California certified a class action lawsuit against P*rnhub/MindGeek/Aylo on behalf of “tens of thousands” of child victims abused for profit. Class certification is a pivotal decision for a class action lawsuit. In order for a case to be afforded class action treatment the court must certify a class based on if the proposed members satisfy the requirements for certification.
