Rainfall: We're going to be seeing much, much, more of it. Climate change is a major reason that the UK suffered such a wet winter, scientists have confirmed. It was the country's second wettest October to March period on record. Dartmoor alone received over 4x the average rainfall it normally does back in February. We now know that as the atmosphere warms, it can hold more moisture, roughly 7% more per 1C of warming. This brings a risk of increased frequency and longevity of heavy rainfall events, particularly during winter if greenhouse gas emissionsโ€ฏcontinue to rise. Conversely, we are likely to get hotter, drier summers. What does this mean for peatlands? Due to our position in the UK, the South West's peatlands are going to feel the impacts of a changing climate and events like El Nino the soonest and greatest. We need to work to keep peatlands wet in summer, and slow down the immense amount of water rushing off them in the winter. It's why we're putting in stone blocks, leaky-wooden dams and peat bunds like these to create shallow pools that overtime will fill with peat-forming sphagnum mosses. This all helps raise and stabilise the water table during drought periods, keep water in the landscape, and act as speed bumps to slow down the increasingly flashy flow of water and reduce erosion of the carbon-rich peat. Follow along as we make a positive difference to the future of these vital yet overlooked spaces. We have continued our path work this week. The duckboards on the edge of the recently restored bog have broken in places and some surfaces were getting very slimy in the wet weather. If you grew up in the UK's South West, it's likely that you spent your teenage years traipsing about the hills and valleys of Dartmoor as part of the @armytentors Challenge. Open to 400 teams, each consisting of 6 young people, teams spend 2 days on the moor in early to mid May attempting routes of 35, 45 or 55 miles or the one day Jubilee Challenge. Before the hike begins, the teams, along with teachers, parents and military personnel gather for a pre-Ten Tors briefing day at Okehampton Army Camp. This annual event gave the South West Peatland Partnership team a brilliant opportunity to host a stall in the Engagement Village to meet the participants, answer any questions about peatland and access, and chat through why weโ€™re doing what weโ€™re doing for the benefit of people, wildlife, water, archaeology and the climate. A bog in the box, pin the beak on the snipe, maps of restoration site locations across Dartmoor, and large images of peatland erosion features were great conversation starters. The SWPP team spoke with teams about different methods of restoration, how the design of peat bunds allows access through sites for walkers, livestock, and farmers, and which wildlife and plant species they can expect to see out and about as they pass restoration pools. We also had several young people come over and ask about careers, how we got into our roles and general advice about securing environmental jobs locally. It was encouraging to see the enthusiasm in local young people considering their options to make their way into the world of peatland and landscape regeneration. Well done to all the teams involved and thank you to the MoD for hosting us. Meet Walter, the water vole! ๐Ÿ˜Š Water voles are one of the many friends of our lovely Lindow Peatbog. Although they are very shy and rarely emerge to greet us, we know that they love the wetland environment. Fun fact: Water voles forage for food and shelter, creating burrows in the peatbogs. In turn, this helps to aerate the peat and promotes growth of the bog mosses! #discoverlindow #lindowman #watervoles #ukwildlife #wetland #peatlandrestoration #environment #peatland #peatbog #education

Peatlands are not only critical wildlife habitat, they extremely effective at greenhouse gas sequestration. Thatโ€™s why Dr. Bin Xu and his peatland restoration team is partnering with Fort Nelson First Nation to study the effects of peatland disturbance and restoration methods on the methane and carbon balance in the boreal forest. Peatland restoration helps to build sustainable practices into the economy, for both the environment and for the people that call the boreal forest home. Do you know what makes peatland bogs so special? Below are some of our favourite fun facts about Wilmslowโ€™s very own boggy wonderland. ๐ŸŒฑ Peatland bogs are home to some of the most rare and wonderful plants, such as Sphagnum fallax. This is a flat-topped moss you can ONLY find around bogs. ๐ŸชณNot to mention you can find some interesting little creatures wandering round, this is their home! ๐Ÿƒ Peat is the single biggest store of carbon in the UK, storing the equivalent of 20 years of all UK CO2 emissions and keeping it out of the atmosphere. This week, our team stumbled upon a Common Lizard during our visit to @kingsdalehead ๐ŸฆŽ Common Lizards are the UKโ€™s most prevalent reptile, found in a variety of habitats like heathland, moorland, and woodland. Theyโ€™re often spotted sunbathing to regulate their body temperature under the warm rays of the sun. โ˜€๏ธ Our discovery took an unexpected turn as this particular lizard was missing its tail! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Did you know this is part of their incredible defense strategy? Known as caudal autotomy or โ€˜self-amputation,โ€™ itโ€™s a behavior where the lizard sheds its own tail to escape a predatorโ€™s grasp or distract them for a quick getaway. Though it leaves behind a distinctive scar, as shown in the picture, the lizard has the amazing ability to regrow its tail, albeit often shorter than the original ๐Ÿฉน - Rhiannon #PeatlandsMatter #Nature #Wildlife #Conservation #Reptiles #GreatNorthBog #PeatlandRestoration

Water being held back in the landscape on Exmoor, as small peat bunds created by SWPP help to slow down the flow of water off these steep slopes. Do you know your bog plants? Or rather your moorland plants? Bogs that are in good condition are incredibly rich habitats. In the valley mires and blanket bogs of our uplands we can find many incredible plants if we look hard enough (and donโ€™t mind getting a bit wet)! Plants with fabulous names like bog bean, bog asphodel, bog pimpernel, and then thereโ€™s all the mosses and the grasses and rushes and on and on ๐Ÿคฉ Sadly our bogs arenโ€™t in great condition. For example less than 1% of Dartmoorโ€™s blanket bogs are functionally intact meaning less carbon storage, less biodiversity in plants and insects and birds and mammals. South West Peatland Partnership are trying to reverse this by various measures to rewet the moors on Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and Exmoor and get our bogs & peat lands back to functional condition for the planet and for nature (and for us). and Iโ€™m so happy to be volunteering with them and yesterday I was treated to a full day geeking out on bog and moorland plants on Exmoor as part of a 2 day training event for volunteers (and today is all about mosses) ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Photo 3 ~ marsh violet Photo 4 ~ Heath spotted orchid Photo 5 ~ marsh marigold Photo 6 ~ marsh thistle Photo 7 ~ bog bean Photo 8 ~ purple moor grass shoots Photo 9 ~ bog pimpernel and this is great stuff if your working towards your hill and moorland leader or mountain leader qualification ๐Ÿ‘ #bogs #bog #moorland #moors #peatlands #bogplants #peatlandrestoration #nature #lovenature #conservation #volunteering #southwestpeatlandpartnership #exmoor #dartmoor #bodminmoor

Scotland Shifts to Net Zero Aims by 2045 ๐ŸŒ ๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Scotland's ambitious climate goals have shifted ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ While the 2030 target of reducing emissions by 75% has been changed , the focus is now laser-sharp on achieving net zero emissions by 2045. Here's the breakdown โœ๐Ÿป ๐ŸŒฑChange of Course: Scotland acknowledges the challenges of the initial target and is refocusing its efforts on the longer-term goal. This move comes with new measures like expanding electric vehicle charging stations and investing in peatland restoration. ๐ŸŒฑNet Zero Commitment: The focus on reaching net zero emissions by 2045 remains strong! This means Scotland will be carbon neutral, balancing any remaining emissions with removal efforts like planting trees. ๐ŸŒฑContinued Action Needed: Environmental groups are urging the government to not only implement these plans but also consider even bolder actions. This could involve setting more ambitious targets or taking more aggressive steps to cut emissions. Care about people & planet and want to do something to make the world a kinder place? I feel very privileged to be the landscape architect for Kiltimagh Emigrant Park and to work with such a dynamic and committed team both on the committee and in the local community. Extending to 6 acres in the heart of Kiltimagh, half of which is mineral soil, the lower half peat. Kiltimagh and Mayo, have been heavily affected by emigration. Drawing parallels between the migration of people and the natural world, the park is being developed to preserve and enhance nature, to draw in more wildlife and in turn to draw in more people, a positive migration. Working with nature means that the park is a work in progress, reflecting how nature does it. Recently, we joined forces with Caledonian Climate Partnership to host a Peatland Survey training for students from the University of Exeter in the upper catchment of the River Findhorn. Delivered by FWI Project Officer, Guy Harris, along with Abel McLinden and Jura Macmillan of Caledonian Climate Partnership, around 25 students received practical, placed-based training in peatland habitats. This included survey techniques, consequences of peatland erosion and restoration methods, as well as an introduction to the wider work of the Findhorn Watershed Initiative. A big thank you to locally based ecologist, Calum Urquhart, who was also on hand to offer expertise and knowledge of the fauna and flora of these complex habitats. Restoring the degraded peatlands of the Monadhliath mountains in the headwaters of the Findhorn watershed at scale will be vital in the process of both mitigating rising temperatures in our local rivers, but also to sequester carbon and help our watershed play its role in the global drive towards net zero. This first foray into peatland survey training is one example of how we can contribute towards building more skills and capacity for nature restoration work. Weโ€™re looking forward to developing more training opportunities for students, local land managers and residents over the year ahead, and doing our bit to inspire the next generation to pursue green career opportunities. #findhornwatershed #riverfindhorn #naturerecovery #greenjobs #placebasedtraining #peatlandrestoration #GreenTraining @caleyclimate @fnlrtrust

Recipe time! Today we are going to be showing you how to make peatland, just like the Earth did over 10,000 years ago! Ingredients: ๐ŸงŠ Ice Sheets ๐Ÿ’ฆ Water ๐ŸŒฑ Peat-Forming Plants ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Time Method: 1. As the Ice Age ended, ice sheets began to break off and float away. This left behind 'depressions' in the landscape. 2. These depressions then filled with meltwater, creating shallow lakes and ponds. As there was not a lot of space for water, any rainfall made the depressions susceptible to becoming waterlogged. This means that the ponds were too full of water and could flood. 3. The damp conditions were a great home for moisture-loving plants, like moss. As the moss died over time, their remains didn't decompose fully due to the lack of oxygen and acidic environment. This led to the gradual build-up of organic matter, which we now call peat! 4. Over years, the layer of peat grew thicker and the bog expanded. This leads us to where we are today! #discoverlindow #lindowman #wetland #peatlandrestoration #environment #peatland #peatbog #horriblehistories #education

Today is #WorldCurlewDay ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฃ This brown, speckled creature with its downcurved bill acts as a real mascot for our beloved peatlands ๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฑ The distinctive 'cur-lee' call of the curlew can be heard in our favourite wetland habitats from February to July ๐ŸŽผ However, what was once a common sight and sound across the UK and Ireland is now much rarer. The curlew is now listed as 'high conservation priority' due to their dwindling numbers. So this World Curlew Day why not spread the word about curlews? ACRES staff have spent a few days this week upskilling in peatland restoration. This training course provides ACRES Project Officers with the knowledge and skills on how to recognise sites that may require restoration works and how to carry these out. Most importantly, it provides farmers with the support if they want to take action to protect their peatland sites, particularly those that have degraded due to overgrazing, altered hydrology/draining etc. Peatlands are extremely important stores of carbon and they play a significant role in flood regulation, water quality and supporting biodiversity. Stabilising peat from further erosion and restoring the hydrology of peatland are the main goals of restoration efforts. It's our favourite kind of post. A before and after post ๐Ÿ˜ And it's a big one! *After > Before* Here's an area of restoration works on Bodmin Moor that took place in March looking incredible this week. You can see that *so much water* is being held back and slowed down in the landscape. The comparison with the dry, scrubby, eroding environment from before is clear. These works have made the area better for water, richer for wildlife, helpful for carbon storage, encouraging for plant diversity, and stronger for protecting the erosion of historic environment features. ๐Ÿ’ง The water may draw down as we get into summer, but the design of the stone, peat and wooden blocks will help raise and stabilise the water table, encouraging peat-forming sphagnum mosses to colonise and build up. ๐ŸŒฑ Bracken should soon become flooded out, diversifying plant life to more bog species like the insect-eating sundew, bog bean, bog asphodel and cotton grasses ๐ŸŒณ Willow will thrive, trapping sediment, filtering water and providing habitat for wildlife (we heard a willow tit out here yesterday) and we'll be seeing dragonflies, waterfowl and whirlygigs on these pools in no time at all. This was a challenging site for the team due to the sheer volume of water we've received this spring in the South West. The results are testament to our Project Officers thinking outside the box and working closely with skilled contractors to achieve this vision. The area will 'green up' as vegetation takes hold and we finally get some sunshine here in Cornwall, and our monitoring team will retake this picture in the next few months to show you how quickly it may change again. ๐ŸŒž SWPP is funded by @naturalengland @southwestwater (whose site this is and whose biodiversity improvements through conifer removal can be spotted in the background) #DuchyofCornwall @cornwallcouncil @nationaltrust @envagency @moorandwoodland @quantockandexmoor #peatland #peatlandrestoration #rewilding #regeneration #peatbogs #generationrestoration #nature #landscapemanagement #slowtheflow

A significant international collaboration to support peatland restoration in the North Pennines National Landscape has been announced by German environmental association, @nabu. The โ‚ฌ1.1 million investment will be used to restore over 900 hectares of degraded peatland in the North Pennines as part of the Great North Bog coalition. Healthy peatlands are vital for biodiversity and provide multiple benefits for society, such as flood mitigation, improving water quality, and storing carbon. Frank Woesthoff, who leads NABUโ€™s climate fund, said: โ€œNature knows no borders and at NABU we work tirelessly to protect species, habitats, and climate, at home and abroad. Peatlands are a priority for NABU and we are very pleased to be putting this funding in place to directly improve these valuable habitats in order to bring them back to their natural state.โ€ Paul Leadbitter, Peatland Programme Manager with the North Pennines National Landscape team, said: โ€œThis is a significant and very welcome investment and is the first funding we have had from a non-UK partner since our EU LIFE programme that began in 2017. The North Pennines National Landscape team is leading the way in attracting green finance for such large-scale environmental projects.โ€ Read more: https://northpennines.org.uk/investment-uk-peatlands-nabu/ #northpenninesnationallandscape #peatlandrestoration #climate #natureconservation
