It was 1991. Or 1992. Soon after graduating high school, me and my friend Josh went on a mini-road trip to Lake Fairfax, VA for the first ever LOLLAPALOOZA. The night before we had a celebratory party at his house, with all of our friends,(Josh's parents were out of town)so needless to say we were a bit hungover(also the house was mess from partying, so the plan was to cleanup after we g ot back that night) when we got to the long line of weirdos entering the festival. By noon it was getting hot, and by 1pm it was getting sweltering. This was the end of May and possibly the hottest day I'd have ever had dealt with prior to entering the military the following year. Sometime later I had somehow gotten seperated from Josh and I was on my own now. Figuring that Josh was probably watching other bands or in a tent somewhere I continued to wander around, and the drone of Living Colour's & Butthole Surfer's music sets became the soundtrack to my death march around the festival. I watched as these folks hijacked a truck that was attempting to deliver water to one of the tents. I managed to grab two bottles and ran off to one of the tents that was providing some shade in the desert-like heat. At 6pm Siouxie & the Banshees came on and they managed to wake me up out of my dehydrated daze. Still no sign of Josh, though I had hoped he was having fun. Then soon it was dark, and Janes Addiction was on. Then everything was over and still no Josh. The crowd of GenXers flooded Lake Fairfax's suburban streets and some time later I found Josh passed out in the car. Josh suffering from the heat had fallen asleep with the AC on thus killing the battery. In a time where only payphones(if they even worked) existed, trying to make a plan of survival was difficult though not impossible. We left the car. Took a bus to downtown Fairfax? Or D.C.- I don't remember. We got a hotel and crashed. The gas station across the street from our car told us they'd jump the car in the a.m. So we went back the next morning, got it jumped but found this note... Like a scene from an 80s teen flick, we showed up as his parents were pulling up in the driveway.. #lollapalooza #the90s #nocellphones
