I found this show so frustrating that when I started watching it in mid-April, I had to stop. On @oliviaanikst suggestion, I picked it back up, and while I was again quite frustrated, I realized that, perhaps, was the point of the show. Bad decisions that defy logic made by profoundly broken people struggling with mental illness…and the process of laying that bare and working it out in public…well, it certainly made me think and wrestle with the contradictory thoughts I had. So while I had mixed feelings about this show, I suspect that’s exactly what Richard Gadd was going for, so…kudos…? Warum??? Das ist wohl die Frage, die ich mir bei dieser Serie am häufigsten gestellt habe. Warum tut er das? Warum tut er sich das an? Warum sagt er ihr nicht klipp und klar, dass sie gehen und nie mehr wieder kommen soll? Warum geht er nicht direkt zur Polizei? Warum lässt er sie all diese Dinge tun und sagen, ohne für sich selber einzustehen? Warum? Warum? Warum? In sieben Folgen werden wir hier in eine Welt geschleudert, die in mir Gefühle jeglicher Art hervorgerufen hat. Zunächst Mitleid, dann Ärger, dann Wut und schließlich Verzweiflung. Fremdschämen war auch ein großes Thema. Was die menschliche Seele Donnys in seinem Leben bereits verkraften musste ist unvorstellbar. Unvorstellbar grausam. Und wenn man dabei zusehen muss, wie sich sein Hintergrund hier von Folge zu Folge entdröselt, ist man ständig dem Drang ausgesetzt, abzuschalten, weil allein die Vorstellung so grausam ist, dass ein einzelner Mensch all diese schrecklichen Dinge erleben musste. Aber etwas lies mich dranbleiben an der Story zwischen dem Barkeeper Donny, seiner Stalkerin Martha und seiner neuen Liebe Teri, die allesamt mehr als ungewöhnlich sind, schon jeder für sich, aber in der Kombi noch viel mehr. Glücklicherweise findet die Serie einen friedlichen Abschluss. Und es flossen ein paar Tränen, das gebe ich zu, aber das kann ja auch befreiend sein. Was als scheinbar bekanntes Stalker-Drama beginnt, entwickelt sich zu einem schrecklichen Desaster, das viel Kraft kostet. Aber am Ende wird man versöhnt mit viel Mut und Gefühl. Nicht nur von Donny, aber mehr verrate ich nicht, um nichts vorweg zu nehmen. Aber auch hier sieht man wieder, dass nichts so sein muss wie es erscheint. Die Dinge sind meist komplizierter und tiefgründiger als an der Oberfläche sichtbar. Aber sie aus dem Dunkel zu holen, sich mutig dem stellen was war, ergibt hier auf jeden Fall Sinn und lässt den Zuschauer zwar erschöpft, aber auch erleichtert zurück. Wer starke Nerven hat und auf Storys über menschliche Abgründe steht, sollte sich die Serie auf jeden Fall ansehen. #rentierbaby #richardgadd #jessicagunning #navamau #netflix #serie #

🧜🏽 Hola Sirenitas! Ya pasó el hype por esta serie, pero igualmente voy a hablar porque me pintó. Sí, finalmente vi #BebéReno, la serie que la está rompiendo en Netflix creada por #RichardGadd. La serie tiene esa fórmula que funciona: es corta, siete capítulos de media hora, en cada final de episodio tenés un cliffhanger (de esas palabras que te enseñan en la facultad que después no usas) para volverte adicto y verla en una tarde. 🤷🏽♀ Yo la dividí en dos porque el capítulo 4 se me hizo tan fuerte e innecesario, que pensé que no la iba a retomar. Los tres episodios que me quedaban los vi juntos y con la mente puesta en: "La voy a liquidar ahora" porque sentí que si no la veía de una, iba a quedarme en la mitad para siempre. La historia se centra en un bartender que por pena invita a una chica a tomar un té. No le cobra porque ella supuestamente no tiene dinero para pagarle. La chica empieza a visitarlo constantemente y nos damos cuenta que es una acosadora. La historia está basada en hechos reales y la gente es muy morbosa, así que no me sorprende que tenga éxito. 😅 Lo que más me aterra de todo es ver una serie y reconocer ciertas conductas en personas que tuve cerca mío que jamás pensé que podía llegar a asociar a un personaje así, pero por suerte a veces uno está a tiempo de cortar ciertos vínculos, para no llegar a estos extremos. Estar en una red social es complicado porque estas conductas tóxicas y delirantes están por todas partes. Me pasó varias veces y sigo atormentada de lo manipuladora e insistidora que puede llegar a ser una persona. 🎬 Vuelvo a la serie. La estructura funciona de maravilla en principio porque tiene ritmo y unx quiere saber cómo va a desarrollarse la resolución del problema. El tema es que la resolución llega muy tarde. Siempre hablar de salud mental es algo delicado y difícil de trabajar de forma audiovisual. Acá se ahonda mucho en cómo una víctima es incapaz de denunciar a su acosador. Y me parece bien al comienzo, pero post episodio 4 (el que rompe con todo y descoloca al espectador) se vuelve reiterativa y densa. El ritmo cambia y el lugar del protagonista deriva en algo que, para mi, no funciona. *Sigue*

Baby Reindeer Score: 10/10 Plot: True story based on the experiences of Richard Gadd, the writer and lead actor in the show, as he navigated the aftermath of serious trauma, compounded by the horrors of an abusive stalker. Review: Well, I think we can all agree this was both terrifying and traumatising just to watch, so I can hardly guess at how awful it was to live through. I had to watch the first four episodes in short instalments as I couldn’t cope with a full episode at a time. I even had to take a weeks break to watch eps 5-8 because I was pretty done in by that point. If I hadn’t needed to know how it ended I would have probably dropped out if I’m honest. Not because it’s bad, but rather because it was a tale so well told that I felt too anxious and creeped out to handle it. If you know my viewing tastes then you’ll know this is a first for me! My tastes run to the macabre but this was way too close to the bone for me. The actress who played Martha (Jessica Gunning) has either entirely ruined or made her career with this part, because she played it SO WELL I fear I’ll never see her as anything else again. A truly disturbing tale of several people dealing with mental and emotional problems all converging together to create the perfect storm. La sinopsis de Netflix describe la serie como "una historia retorcida sobre un acosador y su víctima, adaptada de la obra de Richard Gadd, galardonada con el premio Olivier, basada en su propia vida". Esta serie recibió elogios tanto de la crítica, con una calificación perfecta en Rotten Tomatoes poco después de su estreno, como del público, con un puntaje del 88%. 🖥 Con siete episodios, la serie ofrece una visión de la vida de Richard Gadd, quien enfrenta un trauma pasado al crear esta historia con toques de comedia. Gadd combina el drama con el humor, como él mismo ha expresado: "Creo que la vida es una comedia dramática. La vi rápido y me convenció, pero no me voló la cabeza ni me pareció la gran cosa. No pude empatizar en ningún momento con él, todo lo contrario. Sentía que daban círculos constantemente y, exceptuando, el foco de la víctima, a nivel trama no generaba nada 😬 Sé que da para un montón de análisis que hay que dejárselo a los especialistas, psicólogos, etc. que quizás yo no pueda hacer, pero desde el punto vista técnico no la disfruté. La forma en la que es narrada y la voz en off me parecieron bastante insoportables. Hay dos cosas que salvan la serie: a) El cuarto capítulo, que es muy fuerte. b) La actuación de Jessica Gunning, quien interpreta a Martha. Por otra parte, todo el revuelo y lío mediático que se está generando por esto me parece nefasto. So...I watched this close to when it first came to Netflix. Wow! What a series! Dark as hell but really well done. Scary considering it was based on a true story. Very well worth a watch. É uma série que acima de tudo fala sobre doenças mentais e como elas podem ser sutis às vezes, mas não menos destrutivas. Decirte que me gustó sería raro, pero sí puedo decirte que me impactó y me hizo pensar mucho. El hecho que esté basada en una historia real y, de pasó, quien la escribe, produce y protagoniza es la persona real que vivió todo esto, ya la hace más que interesante. Pero lo primero que debes saber es que no está hecha para que empatices con nadie, porque está contada de forma tan honesta que será difícil buscarle sentido común a todo lo que ocurrió. It started as something that would stress me out or leave me traumatized, but it has moved me, made me think a little about everything that occurs for a reason.
