That album was v special but here on #Mayday (released today!) she’s given us her finest yet. #MarissaAnderson and #JimWhite (from the great #postrock band #DirtyThree) appear again, and there’s some astonishing sax on the stirring closer “Berceuse”. it’s about that guitar tho – all liquid flow, gently propulsive – that voice, a singularly beautiful expression of sweet melancholy that shares a depth with #LeonardCohen. It’s hard to pick favs on an album this rad, but “Terres brûlées” is all simmering tension, and “La belle Françoise (pour Sylvie)” is a genuine heartbreaker and soul healer. I get the feeling that a lot of English Canada is really missing out on a national treasure here, but hopefully that changes. The Baby Hippo formation was named by Jim White, the discoverer of Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico,. It was still labeled as such in 1949 when this postcard was published.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park is in the Guadalupe Mountains about 18 miles southwest of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The caverns include a large limestone chamber, named simply the Big Room, that is almost 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide, and 255 feet high at its highest point. The Big Room is the largest cave chamber in North America and the ninth largest in the world. The Jumping Off Place shown on this postcard is at the end of a tunnel branching off from the Big Room. From here, the visitor can look down into the Lower Cavern, which is at the 900-foot level below the entrance, the deepest part of the system open to the public. In 1898, a teenager named Jim White explored the cavern with a homemade wire ladder. He named many of the rooms, including the Big Room, New Mexico Room, Kings Palace, Queens Chamber, Papoose Room, and Green Lake Room. He also named many of the cave’s more prominent formations, such as the Totem Pole, Witch's Finger, Giant Dome, Bottomless Pit, Fairyland, Iceberg Rock, Temple of the Sun, and Rock of Ages. Deep below the limestone cavern are petroleum reserves. At a time near the end of the Cenozoic, hydrogen sulfide began to seep upwards from the petroleum into the groundwater. The combination of hydrogen sulfide and oxygen from the water formed sulfuric acid, which aggressively dissolved the limestone deposits to form the caverns. Once the groundwater drained off, stalagmites and stalactites were created as rainwater and snowmelt percolating downward and evaporating on the floor left calcium carbonite deposits.

They also picked up their first AWA Southern Tag Team titles; in an incredibly busy year for the belt, the duo would go on to win it SEVEN MORE TIMES in 1973. Stress control for the summer term in secondary. Summer term comes with so much excitement for most students, but there is one year group I'm thinking about at this time of year as the run up to summer is probably going to be one of the most stressful, yes you got it, the year 11's. Their world is going to be rocked to pieces in the next few months and life is going to change completely. That's scary enough for any adult to think about and we're just expecting our 15/16 years old to just pop along as normal with so much uncertainty surrounding September and post 16. With study leave looming round the corner and no insight to their future until August results, it's more important now than ever to keep that positive open communication going. A quick check in with a student, a smile, a sprinkle more time and understanding may be needed. This term has been so eye-opening so far and the air is electric in the school with excitement, the days are getting longer the air is getting warmer but the stress levels are also rising and countdown has begun. A phase I use often with students is "pause and respond try not to react", I feel this is important for educators to remember too. Stress can make people do funny things you wouldn't expect sometimes, if we're stressed, they're stressed. With the news of a new record coming out I thought I would get this one from 2002 out of the colllection and spend a couple days with it on the table. Really enjoyed some of the conversations I had yesterday with some folks that saw them here in Louisville when they came a couple decades ago. Warren prancing up and down the catwalk stage playing violin are memories I can actually recollect which is so rare for me. An intense, impressionable performance I hope to see again if they hop over the pond and tour here this year.
