A campsite isnโt necessarily your โgo toโ for a Sunday roast but itโs surprising what hidden gems are out there when you go looking! The Stable Bar is the onsite restaurant located at the Polmanter Touring Park in Halsetown on the back road into St Ives. Once seated in their spacious bar, it was only a few moments before we were devouring 2 well presented roasts, containing a really good range of veggies and trimmings. The meat was well cooked, the veg was well seasoned and the Yorkshire was wellโฆ massive. Yesterday was a great day. Productive and nourishing at the same time. Didnโt see the Kokoschka I wanted to see again, but I was pleasantly surprised by the gorgeous 20th century British art works I saw.โฃ โฃ Iโve always admired Peter Lanyonโs work and this was the first piece that caught my eye upon entering the room that houses it at the Courtauld yesterday. This magnetic piece thatโs brimming with energy is โHalsetownโ (1961), titled after a village near St. Ives, where the artist was a lot after the war. It screams the same kind of dynamism Iโve always loved about Abstract Expressionist works, and I understand that Lanyon did meet with Rothko in the late 1950s and even visited the States, where his works were well-received.โฃ โฃ This beautiful painting supposedly conveys the rush of sensations of moving through the landscape, with the colours of land, sea and sky animated by his lively brushwork. His observations of nature came as he walked and drove a lot through the countryside, but heโs also known to have incorporated his observations from his gliding experiences as the basis for paintings that gave an aerial perspective to the landscape of a place he so loved. I think this painting is all of that. A gestural and expressive piece of abstract work that reveals various narratives and attachment to a place.โฃ โฃ I love it. Halsetown Inn is a traditional village pub located in a small village on the outskirts of St Ives. The pub offers ample parking in the patrons car park situated across a quiet road beside the building. The pub is broken up into several smaller rooms which would allow for a cosy atmosphere but unfortunately when we visited there were few customers which didnโt help the ambience. We also feel that the decor is rather dark and outdated. We were given the choice of beef or lamb but there did not appear to be a vegetarian option. Also, even with a limited choice, we found it slightly odd that we are not given a menu to see what was included. However, the roast itself proved to be a pleasant surprise. Believe it or not, St John's in the Fields is actually the parish church of Halsetown! Although it seems bizarre today, when it was built in the early 19th century it would have been right on the very outskirts of St Ives (very much 'in the fields').
