Learning all around us 🌍💚 How often do you slow down and notice the things around you? We’ve been trying to go on more mindful walks recently and we’ve discovered so much! We must have done this walk 2000 times and I normally just notice over growing weeds, nettles and maybe some litter 😑 But this time, we noticed so much more! Just on this short walk, we discovered… 🌱 a ladybird with 20 spots (most I’ve ever seen) 🌱 an incredibly clever weed making some amazing spirals 🌱 a ‘fire bush’ according to E 🌱 a busy bee pollinating a foxglove Finding these things also led to a huge amount of learning and discussion. Patterns, shapes, counting, doubling, plant survival, adjectives, similes, synonyms, colours, textures, pollination, parts of a flower, names of common flowers and where food comes from. All from various year groups in the National Curriculum! The sun was still out for a quick gander round the Yorkshire Dales the other week. A farmer is getting out in the fields with … probably bagged fertiliser. I couldn’t quite see the printing on the bag facing the driver. I always imagine this sort of load alarming the more nervous driver who meets the tractor on a single track road like this one. Deepdale is a side dale which branches off south of Dentdale. The photos are from near the head of the dale, on the wild switchback road which links Dentdale to Ingleton, below the back of Whernside. There are definitely a couple of good walks up this dale. I have just been eyeing up a circular walk on the Deepdale side which would take in Whernside and Knoutberry. And on the Kingsdale side Gragareth, and the scars overlooking Kingsdale. Buck Beck Bank is an interesting tongue-twister and it would be good to see if it is as interesting as it sounds. Cluntering Gill Bridge is also a good name. It is a word which is virtually unchanged from our Anglo-Saxon ancestry, and still recognisable to our Dutch and German linguistic cousins. You can have a clunter, and you can also have cluntering and cluntered. On days when I walk I find I am much more productive, I have a clearer head and just generally feel calmer and more relaxed! Don’t get me wrong I’m definitely more inclined to walk when the sun is out, but I’m pushing myself to still try and get out when it’s raining, even if it’s just for a little while! One of the best things I can think of for when you get stuck on a problem, is to go for a walk. Whether its a bug, or you're trying to plan a new feature, or in the case of this photo, plan an email sequence, I find there is nothing better than to turn the PC off and just go for a walk outside. Yesterday, our first day of our potential streak, lead us into Montana. We first grabbed a FTF, then completed a bit of maintenance by replacing the first stage of one of my multi hides, and then picnic and scootering to a short multi. Good family time! First, you get the best lobster roll you've ever eaten. Then, after you have sat in the sun on a bench beside the high tide harbor, chewing gratefully, maybe you go back and get another one for dessert, while the Frenchman has a strawberry ice cream in a sugar cone. It's the only lobster roll we eat all year, so it's ok (my father, in my ears: "Life is nothing without excess."). The bun itself is tender, fresh, and its exposed outsides are warmly toasted and golden. The inside is piled to overflow with the most tender, fresh, and sweet lobster. Is it possible that it is all claw meat? I really think it is all claw meat (are some lobsters sold tail-only, frozen maybe, for mass market, so there are all these extra claws?). There is some mayonnaise, there are rounds of scallion, and something anise-y. Either tarragon or caraway. It is unexpected but good. The lobster boats are right there, and you drive past houses where the cages are piled high. . . . Then, per the stickers on the chest freezers in the tiny Stonington Ice Cream Factory* (home of these lobster rolls), you go for a walk. Three miles is not much, but also very much. Fir and moss and violets, old apple trees and rampant lilac, and a hermit thrush's song and cedar waxwings in the tops of the spruce trees. . . . *We're never sure if the place will be open, or even still there. We arrive on the cusp of open-versus-closed season. The owner, who walks with a cane for support, asked us if we wanted to buy it, last year (I had greeted him in the street and asked if he was in fact the owner, because he purveys restraint, exceptionally, and I greatly admire these lobster rolls 🦞 Do you want to buy it, he asked eagerly, and lost interest when we said sorrowfully, No.) His name is Ron Watson, and he owns the Watson Gallery next door.
