1522. Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. (1972) I have a boxset of his first seven albums - I reckon at least three of them are classics. This isn’t one of them, and I’m not sure I’d have bought it if it wasn’t for the set, but it’s still got a lot going for it. Blinded By The Light is a brilliant opener, though I knew the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band version long before this one. Growin’ Up is great too. The rest varies from decent to very good, and points the way to the peak that was to come without ever reaching it. The second one is obviously a budget collection, so misses quite a lot out. The first is just annoyingly sequenced, with jarring jumps from 60s classics to 80s comeback attempts. What Have I Done To Deserve This is fantastic, but I’m not too fussed about the other later ones, despite the Pet Shop Boys being so involved. Some proper classics across both of them though. And what a voice.
