🖤 Back to Black Not the first #amywinehouse biopic but this landed. I went into this not knowing much of her back story other than how she died and the fact that she was way too young. I feel this film highlights most of the troubles she faced throughout her life with relative dignity and shone a light on those close to her who both helped keep her going or helped with her demise. I feel the casting of #marisaabela was a fantastic choice. While #eddiemarsan and #jackoconnell also land with their performances as her father and troubled on and off partner. All in all I enjoyed this movie and felt for #amywinehouse throughout. I appreciate that some things appear to have been missed/not told fully but I also believe that retaining her and her loved ones dignities is just as important. Very well done all in all. Sometimes the best way to go into biopics about famous musicians is to have zero expectations. Given my limited knowledge about Amy Winehouse & the subpar reviews this has gotten, I really didn’t have any pre-consummated notions made up before seeing this. After seeing it, I’m now drawn into both Winehouse’s career & personality, which is all I really could ask for from a movie of this nature. Marisa Abela turns in a phenomenal performance that captures a great deal of complexities & vulnerabilities in her respective character. The supporting cast, particularly Eddie Marsan & Jack O’Connell, also turn in quality performances. The story is consistently engaging, admittedly following a formulaic structure but also never falling short in any aspect. Similar comments can be made towards the production value, which plays the construct of this film safe. My only real issue is with some of the pacing, which occasionally halts the progression of the story to dedicate time towards the music. While this can be credited to fan service & perhaps may have worked better in a more artistically-driven film, it just didn’t maintain the consistency set by an otherwise conventional story development. Regardless, I can’t speak on the accuracy of the content in this script, but I do think the terms for viewing this movie are fairly simple. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel but it accomplishes everything it needs to. Now that it’s out in theaters, I can confirm that I made it into the new movie Back To Black, about the life of Amy Winehouse. I worked as an extra on it in New York last year, and I appear in two shots of the finished film. I’ve included a screenshot of me from the trailer, because even when you’re in a movie you still have to respect theater etiquette and stay off your phone! Getting to see myself on the big screen, even just for a few seconds, was truly surreal. The shoot itself was also an incredible experience, and @marisaabela_ is fantastic in the movie. I want to thank @tylarhavens for seeing it with me, as her excitement made it all the better. There is no one else I would have rather shared that incredible moment with. The only reason I even got to do it was because she drove me to set at 4am on her day off.
