Quintessential ALEX KATZ @alexkatzofficial at Gladstone Gallery “Katz came of age in bubbling post-war New York. Raised in St. Albans, Queens he landed at the Cooper Union, 40 years after the fact and 4000 miles from modernism’s origin story. Cubism and the Paris School had arrived in the American art classroom, but the existentialism of the European experience did not hitch a ride across the Atlantic. So while the fractured image of Picasso and the broken depth of Matisse were his eyes’ guides, Katz’s body belonged to the basketball courts and the dancehalls. This was a singularly American equation. Jump forward 10 years as he skips around the anxiety of Ab-Ex and commits to and creates his own American visual reality - combining the field of color with the CinemaScope framing and scale. THIS equation then might be called the ‘Quintessential Katz’, and is indivisible from our idea of the artist himself. But throughout each successive decade he held his first guide tight, and continued the exploration of that Parisian broken ground, and the American split screen. This has been a constant from the early double portraits (Robert Rauschenberg) through to the first ‘splits’ of Ada. And on to the exploded cut outs (Allen Ginsberg). Now, in the third decade of the 21st century history does as it always does, moving in an orbiting spiral, coming around to meet us, and Katz, 75 years or so later, finds new combinations of the first ideas. Sneak P👀K: Dana Schutz exhibition “Jupiter’s Lottery” at Zwirner is a feast for the eyes & soul! Ambitious in scale and complexity- the viscerally evocative paintings and sculptures depict allegorical scenes in which often grotesque characters negotiate their subjecthood. Posted: “Dear Painter” (2023), a large-headed woman lies in bed, being posed both as a subject and a painter in a staged studio-like space. Against a bright green backdrop (slide 2) she seems unwell, staring vacantly, her large head resembling that of a mascot, as she is being dressed and painted. Painted wet-on-wet, Schutz’s tragicomic situations are populated by characters preoccupied with self-preservation as they tilt towards oblivion. With mask-like features—all jaws and noses—they emerge, in groups and pairs, out of the painterly atmosphere. The depicted subjects are volumetric and malleable, like drifting clouds. Bickerton BLUR 🔴🔴 Last night Gagosian previewed a breathtaking exhibition of sculptures and paintings by my friend and great artist, Ashley Bickerton (1959–2022), including his never-before-seen Blur paintings. Intended as a career overview, the large selection of works was made and installation planned by Bickerton during a trip to New York spring 2022 (see last slide🦈) It is the gallery’s first solo exhibition of his work since they announced representation in 2022 and provides an opportunity to celebrate his legacy and continuing influence. “Bickerton’s Blur paintings, which depict figures and faces in extreme soft focus, were inspired by his chance rediscovery of a faded family snapshot. Each work begins as a digital photograph, which is then rendered as a haze of color punctuated by eyes in the form of colored dots. Produced during the last few months of his life and after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the series evokes memories of friends and moments from his life without nostalgia. His use of sprayed acrylic paint and hyper-stylized color fields also recalls the time he spent working with Jack Goldstein, while the vibrant palette resonates with that of his earlier sculptures. Suggesting a gradual disappearance of their subjects, these elegiac final canvases see Bickerton take a notably contemplative turn. Originally identified with the Neo-conceptualist/Neo-Geo tendencies of late-1980s New York, Bickerton made his name with ironic, abstracted constructions focused on themes of consumerism, identity, and value. When he relocated to the Indonesian island of Bali in 1993, his work took a self-consciously ironic “exotic” turn, its ornate, crafted look contrasting sharply with the conceptual detachment of the artist’s previous output. HB-DAY JAY JOPLING 💥 a man who is always growing to higher levels, bringing great art to the world & raising us up with him💥 In this case to the otherworldly La Ribaute, The Eschaton-Anselm Kiefer Foundation and studio-estate in Barjac, France (a village located 70 kilometers north-west of Avignon), was the epicenter of his creative work from 1992 to 2007. “Rendez-vous”: Lisa Yuskavage in Paris 💚 For this exhibition at David Zwirner Paris, the artist presents new large-scale paintings saturated in deep, jewel-like pigments, each set within an imagined art studio. The works establish a dialogue between Yuskavage’s personal iconography and the trope of the artist's studio, in the tradition established by painters such as Courbet, Matisse, Braque, and more contemporary figures like Guston and Nauman. The “rendez-vous” of the show’s title alludes to the specific way painting can compress time and space. Also on view is a selection of recent small-scale paintings related to the theme of the artist’s studio. While some of these small paintings are studies or sources of inspiration for the large works in the exhibition, others are one-of-a-kind compositions that only exist on an intimate scale. (See slide 8). A few personal notes: Slide 1: Lisa re-examines an image from a painting she made 12 years ago when I modeled 1 month postpartum after having Lux. In-Sand-ity: Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley, in the Western Desert of Egypt, contains invaluable fossil remains of the earliest, and now extinct, suborder of whales, Archaeoceti. These fossils represent one of the major stories of evolution: the emergence of the whale as an ocean-going mammal from a previous life as a land-based animal. This is the most important site in the world for the demonstration of this stage of evolution. It portrays vividly the form and life of these whales during their transition. The number, concentration and quality of such fossils here is unique, as is their accessibility and setting in an attractive and protected landscape. The fossils of Al-Hitan show the youngest archaeocetes, in the last stages of losing their hind limbs.
