Today we’re highlighting this monumental sculpture by artist Sarah Sze! “Shorter than the Day” (2020) evokes the passage of time through an intricate constellation of photographs. Hundreds of images form a mirage-like sphere that appears to float in midair. Each photograph captures a snapshot of the sky above New York City taken over the course of one day. “Shorter Than the Day” is a meditation on permanence and transience that embodies the essence of the Emily Dickinson poem for which it is named. Sze gives form to the idea expressed in the poem’s powerful line: “We passed the Setting Sun / Or rather – He passed us.” Since the late 1990s, Sze has used a wide variety of media to explore the intersection of information, technology, materiality, and time. In her sculptures, she engineers elaborate assemblages from everyday objects held together in a delicate balance, as though perpetually on the cusp of metamorphosis. Sze’s works are a study in contrasts—plane and volume, stillness and movement, organization and chaos—whose simultaneous opposition and attraction create a sense of magnetic tension. Though precisely constructed, her large-scale installations express an organic, kinetic feel, emerging like an evocative gesture across an expanse of space. As the first event of the anniversary year, Pop-up Art will be held from spring to summer to show the museum's collection in various locations. The museum building was designed by SANAA Sejima Kazuyo + Nishizawa Ryue and has a distinctive circular shape and all-glass exterior walls. For this exhibition, the artworks are arranged in such a way that they appear in front of you one after another, like a 'pop-up' on the very front of a computer screen, as you make your way around along the interaction zone. The Project Room, also located on the same site, presents a collection of works by Yanobe Kenji that reflect themes such as technology, the environment and the exploration of humanity. And at night, a video work filmed by TOCHKA appears, featuring Kanazawa’s famous landmark. Sarah Sze at Victoria Miro in Venice After initially studying painting, Sarah Sze launched her career as a sculptor, but over the years she’s added photography, video, printmaking, painting, and installation art to her experimental process to bring the studio directly into the gallery. A winner of the MacArthur Fellowship in 2003 and the United States representative at the 2013 Venice Biennale, Sze recently returned to her painterly roots in expansive solo shows and public installations, including her highly acclaimed photographic sculpture at LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B in New York. Her first exhibition at Victoria Miro Venice includes a new, immersive moving-image installation and an equally captivating suite of new paintings in a space that simulates her studio environment, which lends the feeling that the works were painted in Venice. Sarah Sze Victoria Miro Venice | @victoriamirogallery 16 April–16 June 2024 Victoria Miro presents Sarah Sze’s first exhibition at Victoria Miro Venice. This exhibition, the artist’s sixth with Victoria Miro, marks a return to Venice for Sze, who featured in the 1999 and 2015 Biennales and represented the United States with her exhibition Triple Point in the 2013 Biennale. In a new moving-image installation, entitled Sleepers, 2024, Sze transforms the gallery with an array of ever-changing projections suspended throughout the space that coalesce as both memento mori and memento vivere – a reminder that life is transient, and also that life must be lived. Expanding upon these notions, Sze’s latest series of paintings are shown in surroundings that bring the specific mise-en-scène of her New York studio to a nearby Venetian apartment, evoking a sense that the artist has just stepped away from her place of work, and offering an unparalleled and intimate encounter with the processes that brought the works into being. Collating layers of footage, together and individually, and, using the outline of the paper, creates another film behind it, Sze shows us the versatility of film, image, paper and string! Then go upstairs and find paintings, on the surface and onto the floor, that extract further images from the film you've just seen. GO! ☀️ I spoke to Sze for the GWA Podcast last year; here's a preview (linkinbio): "I think that we're so overloaded with the visual that we have forgotten that we have so many interior images. When I look at you [in person], I think it was a blue corduroy suit that I saw you in. and when I see you on the screen, I see that [the screen]. This Tuesday our #womenartist is on Sarah Sze Sarah Sze (b. 1969) is an American artist and professor. Her work explores the role of technology and information in contemporary life utilizing everyday materials. Drawing from Modernist traditions, Sze's work often represents objects caught in suspension. “Seamless” connects familiar objects from everyday life into a three-dimensional network. The artwork refers both to the Tate Modern architecture, the museum that host the work, and to art historical sources from the early 20th century. Its structures and shapes relate to constructivism (abstract art that reflected the modern industrial world). Sze’s use of the colours red, blue and yellow recalls the Dutch modernist art movement De Stijl.
