Tacita Dean's 'One Hundred and Fifty Years of Painting' (2021) is currently on view as part of 'Julie Mehretu: Ensemble' at Palazzo Grassi, Venice. The 16mm film takes the form of a conversation between Julie Mehretu and the late Luchita Hurtado. As a result of Dean's friendship with both artists, she realised they shared a birthday and that in 2020, Mehretu would turn 50 on the same day that Hurtado would turn 100. Both fabulous women and great painters, Dean took advantage of the fact that everyone had gathered for the new year in Los Angeles. I’ve never had any stability in my life. I’ve always felt like an observer from another planet. This life seemed to me like a movie and somehow I was a real-life character acting in it but I was the only one that knew. After 25 years of spiritual study I have finally come to realize that the consciousness in its highest form is the only true reality. This is indeed just a Divine play that we are engaged in. The intricacies of this tragedy/comedy are so complex and complete that our mind calls what we experience “reality”. But reality fades away the deeper we get into spiritual practice. I have heard it said that when you begin the spiritual journey your inner life is a dream and the outer world is reality but over time you awaken to the truth that the inner realm is the reality and the outer world is the dream. In a period on the planet where we can virtually travel to all parts of the planet, the solar system and the cosmos at large that concept is very graphically witnessed. You don’t have to leave your couch to experience the furthest reaches of the Universe, or so it seems. But the more we study and realize that everything that we witness is based on a limited range of the frequencies our eyes and ears can comprehend the more we begin to see that “reality” is a construct we have formulated based on our senses. Society is a construct based on our agreed morality. The construct goes on and on. It is all quite surreal. I love this triptych from my days at my University Ave studio. It was a one car garage I rented super cheap. There was no water or electricity. I had to sneak in and out afraid that if I was ever caught by the landlord I would be kicked out. I love how this piece echoes The Great Wave by Hokusai.
