Where there’s love overflowing, exhibition catalogue by E.Jane with essay, TITLE HERE, by artist and writer Hannah Black. Published by Genderfail New York-based artist E. Jane envisions an exhibition as a score, presenting digital drawings, gouache wall paintings, and sculptural video installation surrounding a central, empty stage. These works draw upon the artist’s archive of performances of the powerful ballad “Home”, originally sung by Stephanie Mills as Dorothy in The Wiz in its Broadway premiere in 1975. The song’s lyrics reclaim the idea of a home full of love as one of your own imagination. Jane considers its relevance to generations of Black femme divas from Diana Ross in the film adaptation of The Wiz, to Whitney Houston, BeyoncĂ©, and Jazmine Sullivan. Within this expansive timeline, Jane pursues how love is embodied and replicated in archival spaces, inserting their own version of “Home” by their performance persona MHYSA—an underground popstar diva who examines the labor and potency of Black celebrity. The exhibition encompasses a residency for a culminating performance event by MHYSA and additional artists on May 14; during rehearsals, the exhibition will be closed to the public who will be invited to eavesdrop from the lobby. Organized by Lumi Tan, Senior Curator, and Sienna Fekete, Curatorial Fellow. #EJane #LoveOverflowing #ExhibitionCatalogue #Genderfail #HannahBlack #ArtisticScore #DigitalDrawings #GouachePaintings #SculpturalVideoInstallation #HomeBallad #BlackFemmeDivas #ArchivalSpaces #BlackCelebrity #LumiTan #SiennaFekete #ContemporaryArt

Continuing to highlight sonic-oriented publications at Art Metropole this collection of catalogues, essays, and periodicals share a focus on entanglements of sound, culture, and power. The featured artists, writers, and curators explore intimate interactions between sound, nature, history, and the visual. Take a look at what these written texts have to offer to enrich your listening practice. Listed in Order of Appearance: Daniel Olsen: Small World is a catalogue of exhibitions in which Olson refocuses our ideas about the relationship between art and play. Composer and music theorist Martin Arnold discusses the apparitional character of Olson’s work through the examination of Theodor Adorno’s critical appreciation of the essential characteristics of music and pyrotechnics. Where there’s love overflowing by E.Jane expands on the exhibition themes based on the powerful ballad “Home”, originally sung by Stephanie Mills as Dorothy in The Wiz in its Broadway premiere in 1975 and includes images and text featured in the exhibition. Extended Play: Art Remixing Music by Govett-Brewster Art Gallery presents an insightful and colourful record of 17 contemporary artists who have made artworks exploring the interaction of art and music. Espace Issue 131: Voices explores recent art practices in which voice–spoken, declaimed, sung–is key to aesthetic experience. The Bells: Damian Moppett edited by Melanie O’Brian focuses on the unfolding ideas raised in Moppett’s exhibition The Bells (2014), this publication not only contextualizes Moppett’s layered practice, but also engages with the historical and ongoing space of the studio and visual materiality. Sonic Agency: Sound and Emergent Forms of Resistance by Brandon LaBelle highlights sound’s invisible, disruptive, and affective qualities, and asks whether the unseen nature of sound can support a political transformation. #SoundPublications #ArtMetropole #SonicArt #ListeningPractice #DanielOlson #EJane #GovettBrewsterArtGallery #ContemporaryArt #EspaceMagazine #DamianMoppett #MelanieOBrian #SonicAgency #BrandonLaBelle #SoundAndResistance #ArtandMusic #Voice #ExhibitionCatalogue #ContemporaryArtPublications

Just wrapped up my @massartgraduate workshop on #InstallationArt, and over the next several weeks I’ll be recapping what we saw! The cohort was an incredible group of @massartboston artists. I feel lucky to have brought them to so many great contemporary art institutions in Boston. First up, was Jace Clayton (@djrupture) right at home in @maamboston. The exhibition 'They Are Part' is on view through July 30, 2023, so just a few more days to catch the dynamism of this sound exhibition. Joy Feasley (@wormwood_and_haze), the Exhibition Manager, led us through her incredible craft of designing exhibitions, and what efforts were needed to pull off such a feat. Afterwards, we got to explore behind the scenes at the @MFA with đ”Žđ”ąđ”«đ”Ąđ”žđ”©đ”© 𝔡𝔱𝔅𝔬𝔱𝔯 (@silkyjuicy), Curatorial Assistant ofContemporary Art, as the museum was closed to the public for the day! The incredible tour of the exhibitions they helped produce was so special. Our main objective was to see the E. Jane (@glorious_nobodies) exhibition called 'Drenched in Light', a must see on view through Sept 24th!

7/20/2023, 6:51:38 PM

E. Jane: Drenched in Light : now open @mfaboston 💜 The exhibition weaves together recent work with ideas / gems lying in wait from Zora Neale Hurston’s short story Drenched in Light (1924) I first encountered E.‘s super smart, extremely necessary work in early 2020, via a panel at The Kitchen (thanks @a.burstein) Here’s E. on their art — “ Black feminist futurity is really all I have right now, a future that is beyond current fact but that I’m striving to envision into existence. “ come on down! Open through September 24 ✹ HUGE appreciation and thanks to @glorious_nobodies @chukwumaa.official @kat_bossi @nickpioggia @earwig_the_kid @jpcro14 @scott_cinaah @jsdoonan and @mfamuseumcouncil — and also to @silkyjuicy @michellemillarfisher & @ms_theotyson for support ✹ #ejane #drenchedinlight #zoranealehurston #alicewalker #suryabonaly #sheilae #whitneyhouston #bessiesmith #futurity

I’m continuing to think about embodiment, what we give up/sacrifice when we become visible and can we take it back? Also thinking about loving gazes, a belief in the archive and sankofa, making space for Black diva vulnerability/Black femme vulnerability/softness and making images with intention. I want to thank @elliottjeromebrownjr for being my collaborator in making the MHYSA portraits and one of the few photographers that bring out the diva in me 💜 #ejane

It’s June and time for my Yearly Celebration of LGBTI Artists! Day 31- Today’s Artist: E. Jane E. Jane (b. 1990 in Bethesda, Md.) is a conceptual artist and musician. Inspired by black liberation and womanism, their work incorporates text, video, performance, sound, sculpture, and installation. Their performance persona, MHYSA, an underground pop star for the cyber resistance, has appeared in E. Jane’s Lavendra/Recovery (2015–), an iterative multimedia installation, and out in the world. MHYSA’s Hivemind EP was released on NON and listed in Artforum’s “Best of 2016: Music.” MHYSA’s debut album fantasii was released on Halcyon Veil in 2017. In 2018, a live audio-visual MHYSA experience toured Europe and North America. The artist received an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 and a BA in Art History with minors in English and Philosophy from Marymount Manhattan College in 2012. E. Jane lives and works in Philadelphia. “I am not grappling with notions of identity and representation in my art. I’m grappling with safety and futurity.
The Black diva is an archetypal figure Black women dream through; she is a source of light, beauty, and healing through song.” — E. Jane The #NotYetDead project asks self-identified Black women and femmes to post selfies to social media using a pastel backdrop I designed and adorned with the word ALIVE, captioned with the hashtag NotYetDead. The project began as a response to police brutality, specifically after there was no indictment for the murder of Sandra Bland in January 2015. The project aims to defy the narrative of Black women and femmes as only dead and dying at the hands of the police by focusing on the women who are still here, still alive, still resisting.  ALIVE #NotYetDead https://youtu.be/z1LI3M4jFU0 (Info images in the comments) #pride #art #queer #ejane

Within the exhibition, “This Longing Vessel,” Brooklyn-based artist E. Jane enacts a type of radical intimacy, inviting the viewer into the exploration of their alter-ego MHYSA, an underground pop-star who subverts the archetype of the Black diva.   Lavender light fills the walls of an installation which is somewhere between a rehearsal studio and a bedroom, suggesting the character on display is “getting ready.” The installation includes a single-channel video projected onto a wall of mirrors, featuring footage of MHYSA preparing for the live performance of their new album NEVAEH. Underscoring the complexities of Black womanhood, E. Jane activates tensions around the fetishized glamour of Black celebrity and questions the intentions of our viewership.  This Longing Vessel, curated by Legacy Russell, is the Studio Museum in Harlem’s second Artist-in-Residence exhibition at MoMA PS1 and features E. Jane, Naudline Pierre, and Elliot Reed. The show runs through March 2021.   🎆 @glorious_nobodies @momaps1 @studiomuseum @ellerustle #ejane #mhysa #thelongingvessel

The stage for NEVAEH LIVE (2021) was directly inspired by my video installation MHYSA-NEVAEH LIVE (Behind the scenes) (2020), on view in This Longing Vessel. That installation is a deconstructed documentary of the material that I’m performing an updated version of in the performance. I love performing for the mirror—like many people, I’ve been performing for the mirror since I was a child singing with a hairbrush in the bathroom. There’s something empowering about being able to gaze upon myself —in my Black feminine body—during a performance. I was always taught that my body was for another’s gaze, but in this space my body is primarily for me! E. Jane (@glorious_nobodies), Naudline Pierre (@cluvie), and Elliot Reed's (@elliot_reed_laboratories) culminating project as The Studio Museum in Harlem's (@studiomuseum) 2019-2020 artists-in-residences is the exhibit This Longing Vessel. The three artists, through their work, question what it is to be Black and queer while trapped in the vulnerability of longing, to be hollowed or filled, to hold or be held (captive). E. Jane does so through multidisciplinary work which contends with Black diva culture and the hypervisibility of Black femme performance on the internet. In Naudline Pierre's quietly contemplative paintings, swirling with colorful imagery, winged Black women hold and watch over one another, suspended in vibrant, phantasmic dreamscapes. Through a haunting five-channel video installation Supernumerary (2020), Elliot Reed himself performs a symphony of guttural screams, discomfiting laughter, gasping, and snorting, transmitting a shared pain. As Zoë Hopkins (@zoelhopkins), writes of the show in our February ArtSeen, "Through vocabularies of Black ecstasy, pain, and rebellion, this cross-disciplinary group of artists gracefully re-enlivens the possibility of intimacy, of sharing, and dwelling in the feelings and presence of those we long for." You can read Hopkins's full review through the link in our bio and be sure to see the exhibit, which occupies three galleries at MoMA PS1 (@momaps1) while the Studio Museum renovates its building in Harlem, through Sunday, March 14th. #ThisLongingVessel #EJane #NaudlinePierre #ElliotReed #TheStudioMuseuminHarlem #MoMAPS1 #ZoëHopkins

✹This Longing Vessel: Studio Museum✹ @momaps1 This Longing Vessel will feature new work by the 2019–20 cohort of the Studio Museum’s foundational residency program, artists E. Jane (b. 1990, Bethesda, MD), Naudline Pierre (b. 1989, Leominster, MA), and Elliot Reed (b. 1992, Milwaukee, WI). In longing, the works shown here find the intersection between queerness and blackness as a waypoint: one to yearn from, to reach toward, to leap beyond. This Longing Vessel troubles and excites ways of seeing, seeking new language for the building of extraordinary futures. 1. NOPE: A Manifesto, 2015 E. Jane Think: Reject the colonial gaze as the primary gaze. ‘“E's Notes on Softness is a gorgeous meditation on softness as a political act. Softness and femme energy can be turned on their heads to demonstrate refusal. White male artists make work about their point of view all day long without having to justify any broader connection to general whiteness.” E. Jane and [curator Ashley Stull] Meyers also worked together to make NOPE: A Manifesto into an object for the exhibition. The manifesto began as a rebuttal to the valuation of their work as being inherently entangled in identity politics. “I REJECT THE COLONIAL GAZE AS THE PRIMARY GAZE. I AM OUTSIDE OF IT IN THE LAND OF NOPE,” the last two sentences of the manifesto read.’ vice.com “The future is being made at this very moment. The way that I think about futurism is not even as much futurism as it is futurity in the sense that I am interested in the continued and renewed existence of Black culture. The Black diva is a huge part, a pillar, of that. As an artist, you get to think about whatever you want to think about. It is one of the few freedoms of being an artist. Considering current events around the world with widespread protests against anti-black violence and racism, we think its important to use our platform to share information to help educate and show solidarity with this cause. Therefore we now present a conversation with interdisciplinary artist and musician E. Jane from Rewire 2018 as the first in a series going through our archives. In this talk, E. Jane discusses their alter ego MHYSA (@glorious_nobodies) the soft, feminine black diva, and asks; "why wouldn't the symbol of liberation look more like me?" E. Jane (born 1990), also known by their performance name MHYSA, is an American interdisciplinary new media artist, musician, and winner of the 2016 #WynnNewhouseAward. Tonight we listen to her describe her creative and social activism voice: “I read this text again last summer and in it Alice Walker told me that the right to be a self-builder and a space-maker, to create spaces outside of the colonial gaze from which to view myself and others like me, is a Utopian demand that I must live out through my art/perform thoroughly, in a way that has blood and bone-marrow. I am not the first person to feel this way, the current only one, and I will not be the last. I look up to the work of artists like Adrian Piper, Lorraine O'Grady, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Ebony G. Patterson, Hannah Black, Sondra Perry, and of many others. I feel that we are entering an age where many Utopian demands should and will be met (in and outside of the field of art) soon or demanded with such vigor that the plates of certain foundations may shift. The future will be different from the present, because for some the present reality is simply too brutal and too overwhelming to be accepted/endured. This is a time where Utopian demands are for some the last and only hope. My art is for these people and the communities of other artists who are also making for us. “ ______ #EJane, Sandra Bland is Not Alive And Someone Is Responsible, 2016. #suartmuseum #palitzgallery #wynnnewhouse #blackart #blackartists #saytheirnames #blacklivesmatter
