#ColeLu’s new publication ‘First Pylon’ will debut at @mastbooks on 5th October between 6–8 pm. ‘First Pylon’ is published by @inpatient_press. Melding historical and literary references with poignant personal experiences, Cole Lu’s work tells stories of dissonance and longing through spiraling odysseys anchored by obscure characters of ancient mythology, a motley assemblage of demigods, daemons, and spirits. ‘First Pylon’ is a compendium of Lu’s vellum drawings which are the precursors to his pieces made of burnt wood panels and linen, accompanied by a corresponding collection of his poetry and writing. With his burned work, Lu returns to the origin of storytelling by writing with fire. In ‘First Pylon’, Lu traces what came before the fire and envisions a new mythos born from beyond the flame. Herald St is pleased to announce representation of #ColeLu. Merging historical and literary references with poignant personal experiences, Cole Lu’s work tells stories of dissonance and longing through epic journeys anchored by overlooked characters of ancient mythology. His practice encompasses sculpture as well as ‘paintings’ made of burnt wood panels, linen, engraved metal, and concrete. Fused with poetic vision, extensive and flowing titles give life to his minutely detailed mark-making. Lu’s output ranges in scale from intimate to enveloping, and the laborious repetition of burning captures a deeply physical and meditative process. He returns to the origin of storytelling by writing with fire – a prehistoric act that is free from an established hierarchy. New work by Lu will be featured on Herald St’s booth at Frieze London, and his first solo exhibition at the gallery will take place next year. 🌙And the Moon Be Still as Bright🌙 One of my favorite shows to date. This group show was presented in collaboration with two nonprofits that I have had the honor to support and champion over the years. @thehereandthereco and @civilart.nyc are two grassroots organizations that have grown immensely in a relatively short amount of time - maybe because they came together in a time when the need for community was greater than ever, but also because they filled a space that had felt intimidating and lonely for so many of us who wished to belong. Together, we curated a group of 19 incredible artists (all of whom I deeply admire) who work across all different media, and draw inspiration from a broad spectrum of cultural influences. While the actions of life are not so many, one he knew was that fever is a symptom of deeper problems, killing everything in him but him. In those few degrees, time stretched endlessly, atoms collided together, the dust in his lungs turned into burning stars. Cole Lu’s practice combines literary and historical references with autobiographical connotation to build new worlds and mythologies echoing trauma, transformation, and regeneration.
