Definitely over the top whimsical 🤣I'm laughing as I post this because anyone who has lived in the west of Ireland (including me) knows that, while the hedgerows DO burst with honeysuckle and pink dog roses, the North West winds would soon make mince meat out of this archway over the picket gate. W.B. Yeats statue, Sligo. This bronze statue of poet William Butler Yeats, wrapped up in his own words, was erected outside the Ulster Bank in Stephen Street to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death, in 1939. Standing over two metres high, this contemporary bronze sculpture, by artist Rowan Gillespie, is one of the Sligo’s most photographed attractions. The striking sculpture overlooks the Garavogue River and looks across to the Yeats Building: home of The Yeats Society and exhibitions about the poet. The Lake Isle of Innisfree was one of our mother’s favourite poems and aptly encompassed her desire for home, having swapped a quiet life in Sligo for bustling city life in 1970s Nottingham. We loved our feral summers in Ireland. My aunts never went to bed before 3am and we were left to our own devices and loved it. Once we didn’t go to bed and instead went off across the fields where we were intercepted at dawn by another aunt who snitched to mum in London. We thought it was fantastic. The long summer evenings with my chain smoking aunts, chatting, laughs and cups of tea, cousins , walking the dogs across the fields, sandwiches at midnight, the odd German Yeats student who definitely expected a country house experience, and was sorely mislead ! Fires that only heated your front, while your back froze, icy rooms (august), beaches, more laughs, cousins and endless stories. This weekend’s adventures I spent this weekend in County Sligo. I spent my time reading (currently reading the Atlas Six, about which I have many thoughts, a review to come), exploring the sights (of which there are not many, but they are beautiful!) and reflecting on W.B.Yeats, as this is where he was buried. After a final history class with Niamh this morning, we headed towards Yeats Country! On the way, we visited the Orphan Girls Memorial and Ballyshannon Workhouse. It was a pleasant surprise to see the sun come out to say hello when we stopped at Drumcliffe. The sunshine and blue sky made for some beautiful photographs.
