The tobacco settlement is “Surplus Money”. Here’s a few Questions You Should Ask Your local MLA and the Premiere and the deputy premiere, and they are as follows: 1. What are the many ways could the MB Government ‘Allocate’ the hundreds of millions of dollars in a tobacco settlement in the province of manitoba?. 2. Do you view a “Budget Surplus” from a tobacco settlement in a provincial budget as ‘Taxpayer’s Money?’ or the provincial government’s money?. 3. Are Taxes in the province of manitoba going to increase or decrease when the surplus money from the tobacco settlement is put in the provincial budget to be budgeted for?. In my personal opinion, I would give back the surplus money from the tobacco settlement back to All Manitoban’s to have the choice and decide how they want to spend the surplus money themselves, because the surplus money is above the budget (a budgeted surplus) when it comes budget time for the province of manitoba. "Today, our First Nations stand united to protect our lands and waters, which are the lifeblood of our communities." -Chief Gordon BlueSky This week, eight First Nations have filed legal action against the Federal Crown, @manitobagov,, and @thecityofwinnipeg, in a lawsuit seeking compensation for a massive sewage spill earlier this year in February. Announcements were made this morning at a press conference held by @amcmbchiefs. The eight Nations—which includes two Treaty No. 1 communities, Brokenhead Ojibway Nation and @sagkeengfn, alongside Black River, Poplar River, Kinonjeoshtegon, Berens River, @Hollow Water, and Misipawistik Cree Nation—filed a statement of claim in Manitoba Court of King's Bench Tuesday suing the city for dumping millions of litres of raw sewage into local waterways for several decades. All located downstream of Winnipeg, the Nations seek $500 million each for breaches of Charter rights as well as $100 million each in punitive damages, for a total $4.8 billion. Due to their locations, anything released into the river flows into those communities. Despite being a source of ancestral knowledge and sustenance, Lake Winnipeg, also known as “Weenipagamiksaguygun” in Anishinaabemowin, is considered a living being with a spirit, a spirit which is now facing devastation. In February 2024 alone, over 221.2 million litres of raw sewage flowed into the Red River, a reoccurring issue over several decades. Treaty One Chairperson Chief BlueSky emphasized the reasoning for pursuing legal action, stating that, “Although we had hoped to avoid court, it’s crucial to recognize the profound importance of water to our people—it sustains us, connects us to our ancestors, and is integral to our cultural identity. Yet, despite our repeated pleas for protection, the government continues to disregard the devastating impacts on our nations and families. In a recent statement, Alexis Kanu, Executive Director of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation, addresses the grave situation of the ongoing sewage spill in south Winnipeg, which has released over 228.1 million litres of raw sewage into the Red River due to infrastructure failures. “The governments of Winnipeg and Manitoba both have a role to play when it comes to our sewage infrastructure. As this spill drags on, I’m looking to our provincial government for answers. As Manitoba’s environmental regulator, I expect the province to explain the impact of this appalling failure of our sewage system. And I would like to hear from them about the consequences the City of Winnipeg will face as a result of this spill. This latest spill is a symptom of a broader problem, which is chronic delays in upgrading our sewage infrastructure. Winnipeg’s North End Water Pollution Control Centre is the city’s largest sewage treatment plant and the single-largest point source of phosphorus to Lake Winnipeg. Every day, the north end plant releases upwards of 150 million litres of undertreated sewage, which is not compliant with the 1 mg/L phosphorus limit first set out in its provincial operating licence back in 2005. In the month of December 2023 alone, the north end plant dumped 4, 419 million litres of undertreated sewage into the Red River. That’s almost 20 times the volume of this spill, coming out of a non-compliant treatment plant that should have been upgraded back in 2014.” The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is steadfast in its call for accountability and accelerated action to safeguard the health of Lake Winnipeg and its communities. To meet net-zero emissions goals, many jurisdictions are starting to ban fossil fuel heating. That's a big challenge for gas utilities, which is why some have responded by fighting the bans, both in Canada and the U.S. But a few are trying to evolve and transition into a new business that takes advantage of some of their existing skills and expertise — namely, geothermal (also known as geoexchange) heating and cooling networks, a form of district heating. This spring, Massachusetts-based Eversource is set to switch on decarbonized heating and cooling for 140 customers in 37 buildings in Framingham, Mass., including a low-to-moderate income apartment complex, single-family homes, a fire station and a school building. Many occupants are excited to get central air conditioning in their homes, said Eric Bosworth, manager of clean technologies at Eversource's gas business. "You know, seeing the customers really excited about a new HVAC system … it makes me even more excited to flip the switch here," he said. The buildings will be heated and cooled with a network of underground pipes filled not with gas but with water mixed with propylene glycol, a non-toxic antifreeze. Their heat source is the ground 150 metres below the surface, where the temperature is consistently around 13 C all year round. That makes geothermal heating and cooling extremely efficient compared to air-source heat pumps, which have to extract heat or remove heat from air that can be much colder or hotter. In winter, the ground warms the liquid, which is pumped back up to the surface, through shallower pipes, and into buildings. There, a ground-source or geothermal heat pump extracts the heat and distributes it through ductwork. In summer, the reverse happens to cool the buildings.
