Women Overseas❤ In these Red Cross memoirs, some 30 women tell their stories of volunteer work with the Canadian Red Cross Corps in overseas postings during World War Two and the Korean War. These dramatic narratives take us across oceans infested with enemy submarines to witness Canadian women on duty in the UK, in Europe and in Asia. The volunteers shouldered challenging and often dangerous jobs, working as nurse's aides, ambulance drivers, welfare officers, cooks, transport drivers and in the social clubs Canadian soldiers visited on leave. We learn how it feels to survive daily bombings and severe food shortages, to witness death and destruction all around, and to acquire the spirit and courage exhibited by so many 'ordinary' people during the war. Laced with humour and filled with grace, these stories are a testament to the vital yet often overlooked responsibilities that thousands of women gallantly accepted for the Allied war effort. The book contains many period photographs as well as an illuminating introduction to the Canadian Red Cross Corps. "Rejection, Reception, Rejection Again. Women in Oregon’s World War II Shipyards" This essay, drawing upon archival research as well as a trove of previously unseen letters, examines the role of women in World War II shipyards. Women won grudging respect for their essential work in building ships, needed to win the war. Once victory was secured, however, much of their effort was forgotten. #womenworldwar2 #boekentip #bruggeleest

A League of Their Own is one of my all-time favorite movies. As a young girl who loved sports like baseball and was often discouraged to be 'one of the boys', Penny Marshall's movie showed me not only was it okay that women stepped up to the frontlines when all of the men went to war...but guess what? Women doing what they loved wasn't the end of the world. It kept spinning. Men (and women) kept fighting overseas. But once they returned home, women's efforts were all but forgotten again. I'm so excited that the Amazon Prime series based on the movie is expanding more of the stories many haven't heard of. I've seen a lot of people say they won't watch it because it's "too woke" or trying to replace the movie...when actually it's showing our side of history. As a World War II history buff, here's a mini-thread on some of the incredible facts about the AAGPBL. Hope you enjoy!! #aleagueoftheirown #aplaceoftheirown #dottiehinson #pennymarshall #isabelalverez #kithinson #jimmyduggal #tonistone #conniemorgan #mamiejohnson #1940shistory #wwiihistory #wwiitwo #wwiihomefront #americanhomefront #womenshistory #womensbaseball #womenssports #womeninsports #aagpbl #darcycarden #abbijacobson #chanteadams #worldwariihistory #womenofwwii #womenworldwar2

Join us at the library on Wed 30/3 at 2pm to hear speaker Steve Illingworth's talk on the role of the Women's Co-operative Guild (WCG)in WW2. Inspired by collections here and at the @cooperative archive, the talk will look at how the women maintained a coherent pacifist policy before, during and after the conflict. Link in bio for details. Many of the women seen in this great image of a 1936 hunger march from our collection are wearing white poppies which were introduced by the WCG in 1933. #womenscooperativeguild #cooperativemovement #empoweringwomen #womenworldwar2 #peacemovement #whitepoppy #womensupportingwomen #nomorewar #1930sbritain #librariesofinstagram #womensmarch #blackandwhitephoto #blackandwhitephotography

WAACs were also requested for the Manhattan Project. To begin with they served in standard roles as typists and file clerks handling classified information. Just as the WAAC became the WAC some transitioned to research and technical positions. Mary Miller, Myrtle Bachelor’s and Norma Goss all worked as chemists at the Los Alamos lab. Several worked in the Army Corps of Engineers in Europe as part of the Alsos Mission. They helped coordinate the flow of information between American and British scientists concerning how close the Nazis were to developing an atomic weapon. #history #militaryhistory #womenworldwar2 #pinup #pinupgram #photography #photoftheday #manhattanproject #manhattan #chemistry #corpsofengineers

For WAAC recruits training began by waking at five thirty to be neatly dressed for reveille at six. Next came making beds, picking up cigarette butts and sometimes photographers flash bulbs in the area before marching to breakfast. Then classes till five in the evening. After supper a study hour then washing pressing uniforms and shining shoes. Studies included sanitation, map reading, military custom and courtesy, defence against chemical and air attack, company administration, mess management and supply. WAAC's had a civilian made physical training course and also learned to drill without weapons. Unforseen social problems cropped up. Men used to open doors for women and sometimes still do. WAACs attempted to open doors for men who out ranked them as part of military custom and courtesy. This caused commotion and males to sprint for a door to avoid a nearby WAACs eager assistance. Laundry could be a morale killer. Especially when a WAAC is expected to stay neat and clean all day during the hot summer months with only four uniforms a week. Under supply of irons and wash tubs made doing the laundry longer than necessary. #military #militarylife #womenarmy #armymess #womenworldwar2 #strongwomen #wwiihistory #wwii #womenww2 #ww2women

Remembering mum’s contribution in WW2. She is now 95. First a member of the ATS working for the War Office in London. She lived there during the Blitz and remembers her twin brother, Joe, at the age of 17 fighting the fires. She remembers the Doodlebugs dropping out of the sky and the spitfires fighting in the sky above. On VE Day she made her way to Versailles and then followed the troops onward to Berlin as part of a group of 20 uniformed women. They were the first small group of British military women to enter Berlin. They formed part of the First Formation Army Group there to assist Gen Montgomery with war crime trials and the setting up of a military government. #remembranceday #worldwar2veterans #womenworldwar2 #womenworldwar #haligoniaca #halifaxtoday #generalmontgomery #generaleisenhower #britisharmy #britisharmygirls #ww2women #britisharmygirls #britisharmyww2 #britisharmyberlin #atsww2 #auxiliaryterritorialservice #berlinww2
