10 curiosities about Francesca Caccini ✨ (Part II) 6️⃣In 1607 Francesca was appointed ‘the musician’, a position that included a fixed monthly salary and made her a musical authority at the Medici court. Her works made her very famous and by 1614 she was the highest paid musician at court. 7️⃣Maria Maddalena of Austria, widow of Cosimo de Medici and regent of Tuscany, commissioned the opera from Caccini, with a plot featuring two very strong female characters, which was unusual for the time. It is said that the contrast of these characters represented the power of the archduchess, thus demonstrating that a woman can rule without problems. 8️⃣In a letter to Ferdinando Gonzaga, Monteverdi mentions his admiration for Francesca as a singer, as well as for her lute, harpsichord and guitar playing. Other musicians such as Giovanni Battista Doni and Pietro della Valle did the same, highlighting the gracefulness of her singing and the quality of her compositions. 9️⃣Taking advantage of her position, Francesca always sought to work with other women. Today I want to share 10 curiosities about the genius Francesca Caccini ✨ (Part I) 1️⃣ Besides being the daughter of the composer Giulio Caccini, her mother Lucia Gagnolanti and her stepmother Margherita della Scala were great singers. Her sister Settimia and her brother Pompeo also devoted themselves to singing, with Settimia becoming a famous singer in Mantua. 2️⃣ “Euridice” was commissioned to the composer Jacopo Peri for the marriage between Henry IV of France and Marie de Medici. However, the work included some arias by Giulio Caccini, which is why Peri explicitly requested in the preface that they should be sung by someone from his circle, and so Francesca, at the age of thirteen, made her debut. Two years later, her father created a solo opera with the same libretto, which his daughter also premiered. 3️⃣The court chronicler Cesare Tinghi mentioned her repeatedly as a singer at court festivals, but also at solemn religious services, which was quite rare for the time, as it was generally forbidden for women. 4️⃣Michelangelo was the great-nephew of the famous sculptor and painter of the same name and met Francesca at the Medici court, working together on several works. It is also known that they had a strong friendship, due to the correspondence they maintained while Francesca was on tour. 5️⃣In a letter in February 1618, she wrote to her friend Michelangelo, that she would like to add in a preface to her book “il primo libro delle musiche” and in it a dedication to her father, Giulio Caccini, acknowledging him as the great teacher of all, and not so much as his daughter, but as his grateful pupil. Das Quartett Ellen Schlenk-Lechner, das drei Jahre davor schon das Streichquartett op.6 von Johanna uraufgeführt hatte, veranstaltete am 25. Februar 1914 das auf dem Programmzettel angekündigte Kammerkonzert. Die beiden ersten Programmpunkte wecken unser besonderes Interesse. Zunächst war ein Streichquartett von Josef Bohuslav Foerster zu hören. Er unterrichtete Musiktheorie und Komposition am Neuen Wiener Konservatorium, Johanna war damals schon seit vier Jahren seine Schülerin. Danach standen fünf Lieder von Johanna auf dem Programm, davon erklangen die beiden letztgenannten zum ersten Mal. Johannas Schwester Tona sang, Johanna begleitete sie am Klavier. Die Aufführung fand im „Kleinen Beethovensaal“ in der Strauchgasse statt. Es handelt sich dabei um den kleineren Festsaal im Palais Ferstel, der heute als „Kleiner Ferstelsaal“ bezeichnet wird. Der Aufführungsort war neu. Der in früheren Jahren vom Quartett Ellen Schlenk-Lechner bevorzugte Bösendorfersaal im Palais Liechtenstein in der Herrengasse stand nicht mehr zur Verfügung. Das Neue Wiener Konservatorium wurde 1909 gegründet, unmittelbar nachdem das Konservatorium der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, ab damals Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst, verstaatlicht worden war. Die ersten Jahre seines Bestehens waren bewegt. Mehrmals wurde der Sitz verlegt, wie die Eintragungen im „Lehmann“, dem Adressenverzeichnis Wiens, zeigen. Es gab erhebliche finanzielle Schwierigkeiten. Erst als Josef Reitler, Redakteur und Musikreferent der „Neuen Freien Presse“, im Jahr 1915 die Leitung des Instituts übernahm, ging es beständig aufwärts. Ihm gelang auch die Übersiedlung an die prestigeträchtige Adresse des Wiener Musikvereinsgebäudes. Zu den Lehrern der ersten Stunde gehörte Josef Bohuslav Förster, der Musiktheorie und Komposition unterrichtete. Johanna wurde 1910 seine Schülerin und 1919, als Förster in seine Heimatstadt Prag zurückkehrte, seine Nachfolgerin. As I finished preparing for tonight’s rehearsal, the realization hit me— my composition work will be performed by an orchestra for the first time.!“Thàlassa” has been a voyage of discovery, immersing myself in old maps, cartography, nautical terms and ancient myths; crafting a new world, reimagining sea creatures, and chronicling the journey in a Captain’s Logbook. At its core, “Thálassa” embodies a crew bound by a shared yearning to explore beyond doubt and evolve. Now, with the excitement of this new experience ahead, I finish with the old rhyme (original written): “O Thálassa, in your arms we sail, Keep us safe with your watery veil, Embrace our crew with your fate.” . Enquanto me preparava para o ensaio desta noite, entre (re)toques finais e emoções, a ficha acabava de cair, pela primeira vez, uma composição minha será performada por uma orquestra! "Thàlassa" tem sido uma de aventura, mergulhando em mapas antigos, cartografia, termos náuticos e mitos antigos; criando um novo mundo, reimaginando criaturas do mar e registrando a jornada em um Diário de Bordo de Capitão. No seu cerne, "Thálassa" incorpora uma tripulação unida por um anseio compartilhado de explorar além de “verdades” conhecidas, aprendendo sobre o mundo fora de sua caixa e consequentemente sendo exposto a uma evolução como ser. Zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum der Staatslehrerinnenbildungsanstalt wurde am 13. Mai 1920 ein Festkonzert im Großen Musikvereinssaal veranstaltet, in dem, wie dem Programmheft zu entnehmen war, „vorzugsweise Werke von hervorragenden ehemaligen Lehrern und Schülerinnen der Anstalt zu Aufführung kamen“. Die Geschwister Johanna Müller-Hermann und Tona Hermann, beide Absolventinnen der Schule in den Jahren 1891 bzw. 1892, hatten dabei einen bedeutenden Anteil. Von Johanna kamen die „Zwei dreistimmigen Frauenchöre, op.10, mit Orchester“ zur Aufführung. Annie Haager, die schon bei der Uraufführung dieses Werks das Sopransolo gesungen hatte, war eine Schülerin Tona Hermanns. Tona trat überdies als Interpretin eigener Werke in Erscheinung. Sie sang selbst die Uraufführung von sechs Liedern aus ihren „Fiedelliedern“. Nach Inkrafttreten des Reichsvolksschulgesetzes im Jahr 1869 bemühte man sich, die neuen Schultypen möglichst rasch einzuführen. Noch im selben Jahr wurden in der Bäckerstraße 9, im Windhagschen Stiftungshaus, die ersten Schulklassen der neuen Lehrerinnenbildungsanstalt eröffnet und sukzessive erweitert. An diesem Standort befand sich seit 1810 eine Mädchenschule, deren Räumlichkeiten für den neuen Zweck mitverwendet werden konnten, die aber in vieler Hinsicht unzureichend waren. Nach dem Abbruch der Stadtbefestigung in den 1860er-Jahren wurden die frei gewordenen Flächen sukzessive verbaut. Auf dem riesigen Areal Fichtegasse 4 – Hegelgasse 14 – Schwarzenbergstraße 5-7 – Schellinggasse 13 wurde ein großer Gebäudekomplex für Schulen und andere öffentliche Einrichtungen geplant. Nach der Fertigstellung im Jahr 1885 konnte die kk. Lehrerinnenbildungsanstalt an diesen endgültigen Standort übersiedeln. Born in Berkeley, California (September, 1972), to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Gabriela explores her multicultural heritage through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera, Gabriela has traveled extensively throughout South America in creative exploration. 3 powerful women hornists lead the way this weekend @symphonytacoma! We are thrilled to welcome Leanee Sterrett Assistant Principal Horn for the New York Philharmonic (@leelaneenyc) performing a world premiere by our own former Assistant Principal Hornist, composer and PLU professor, Gina Gillie in Reverie. The rest of the program is also very cool! (De Falla, Marquez & Kodaly!) Being a former hornist myself, I fondly recall playing Strauss’s Concerto No.1 & can’t wait to hear Leelanee’s expressive rendition of it. Being often the only woman in the band as a young hornist, I know very well the journey of these women and what they have broken through - it’s not long ago that women broke into professional orchestras, onto the podium, into the repertoire fully as voices finally being heard. Let’s celebrate the gifts we have and never let them be silenced, mistreated or taken advantage of. Gillie’s compositions are known as works that resonate with emotional depth and I feel that in every note she writes - an absolutely gorgeous, lush string and horn work! Leelanee’s artistry illuminates concert halls around the world, enchanting audiences with her lyrical expressiveness and she is also known for her dedication to education and outreach, inspiring young musicians through masterclasses, workshops, and community engagement initiatives.
