These were the first pair of “nice” dress shoes I bought when I started out in London back in 2011, having arrived just after finishing University on a 2 year work visa available for Canadians wanting to move to the UK 🇨🇦🇬🇧 I nabbed a role in The City (aka the square mile / financial district) working in a job that required me to look the part. No offence to my North American brethren but the suits and dress shoes I brought with me didn’t quite stack up to their British counterparts, so a little wardrobe update was needed. Naturally I didn’t have much disposable cash having just arrived as a relatively not so comfortable financially 22 year old, so one of the senior guys at the company took me under his wing and we went out one lunch hour and hit up the shops and he helped to get me sorted out. Here’s a photo of my Oris Big Crown ProPilot Limited Edition Okavango Air Rescue and a pair of Vans Old Skool Shoes - which are well worn and getting a hole in the toe after many years of wear. Oris will be at @topperjewelers First Look event today and tomorrow, featuring the new updated Oris Aquis Diver. James Stacey summarized the new features for Hodinkee: “ . . . these new Aquis models have redesigned cases with shorter and more ergonomic lug shapes, re-proportioned bezels, and redesigned crown guards. The font for the dials is bespoke to the new Aquis models, and all of the new examples will also feature dial-matched date wheels, meaning that the background of the date display will match the dial.” These are subtle updates for sure, but they make the watch appear more refined and sleeker. The Old Skool sneaker was the first design to showcase the famous Vans Sidestripe—although back then, it was just a simple doodle drawn by founder Paul Van Doren. Since its debut in 1977, this low-top silhouette has established itself as an icon in the skate, music, and fashion scenes. Worn by street skaters and punks to hip hop musicians, the Old Skool has been a consistent favorite. I wear them because they are a great light weight canvas sneaker perfect for summer. Thanks to everyone who has already joined in #watchesandkicksweek so far. I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the entries so far that have ranged from Adidas slides to high heels and everything in between, not to mention an extremely creative post by @the.timepiecer I’m going to try not to be too Nike heavy for the week, but this is another Nike entry with the Air Max 90 which debuted in 1990. The very first shoe that featured a visible air bubble was the Air Max 1 (1987) and it was designed by Tinker Hatfield (he’s like the Gerald Genta of watch design and also designed the Air Jordan 3, 4, 5, etc.) Tinker was an architect before he designed shoes and the inspiration for the Air Max 1 design (and the air bubble) was the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. Along with the launch of the Air Max 1 there was an ad that had light shining through the bubble—and if you saw @daniel_howard_taylor stories yesterday, then you saw the ad. Monday of #watchesandkicksweek hosted by @enthuseddad and @thechillseeker These are a custom pair of Nike’s my niece designed for her junior year of high school basketball. However, she found them incredibly uncomfortable and stopped wearing them. I ‘bought’ them from her to have some ‘school colored’ shoes to wear to her games, then my younger nieces games, now my kids go to the same high school. Even sitting in the bleachers for 1-2 hours, my feet are ready to get out of these shoes, I can’t imagine running up and down a basketball court in them. I normally pair the shoes with this @northstarstraps strap or a green nato. It wasn’t until I put them right next to each other that I noticed how different the greens are. It’s time to kick off #watchesandkicksweek hosted by me and DJ @thechillseeker …although we aren’t even the first posts for the theme week. 😅 “A lot” is all relative and if I have a lot of watches, then I really have a lot of sneakers…approximately 100 pairs give or take. My hobbies/collections tend stem from my formative years and getting now what I couldn’t afford then. In 6th, 7th and 8th grades I was at a Catholic middle school with uniforms and the only choice we had were our shoes. These years coincided with the Jordan 3s, 4s and 5s—and what I consider the Golden Age of sneakers. I never owned Jordans as a kid, but like I mentioned I make up for it now. My all-time favorite silhouette is the Jordan 4 (pictured here). Even though I think the black/red (“bred”) colorway is the best, this is the one I wear the most. (And this series is actually two different pairs, a box fresh pair and the pair I’ve been wearing for the last 10 or so years.) Watches mean different things to different people… marking a milestone, a flex, fashion statement, associating with a tribe, remembrance, love of engineering and design, literally anything. Watches also hold special meaning to some but not to others. I’m definitely the former, and this Casio digital watch is one of my most cherished items. I’m visiting my best friends family, who are a 10 hour drive away. This year would have marked 32 years of friendship, mateship, brotherhood… sadly he passed in 2021. And I miss him dearly, but seeing his family and boys grow up makes me feel close to him. But back to the watch… when we were young and broke we used to give each other matching watches, nothing flash, usually digital… weird right? The one I’m wearing is one of the ones we both owned and mine is still going strong 20 years on with the same battery. I rarely wear it, but love it when I do. I also have a tattoo on my arm that I got days after he passed that reads “you’ll never walk alone”, the catchphrase for his childhood favourite soccer team, @liverpoolfc… it’s positioned so I see it every time I look at the time. I think he would have liked it. Miss you, bro. Why gilt? Because painted dials don’t even come close to the dynamic effect of a real gilt dial. That effect is the exposed, polished dial plate showing through the electro-galvanic coating that reflects light and color like only metal can. Crafting gilt dials is difficult, time consuming, and results in a higher rate of rejection due to the strict tolerances involved. Most major brands strive for this effect but they do it with metallic paint because it’s easier and allows for more production tolerances. Not Typsim. Because I have somewhere around 100 pairs of sneakers, I’m counting sneakers as a hobby and here’s my entry. After I took this first shot, I thought I should incorporate something else… (panel 3).
