I spent this sunny, warm Monday morning with some work and a comforting @resorttv1 livestream from the beautiful (and vastly underrated!) Animal Kingdom. 🌳 The details found throughout the park make my heart sing. I mean, just look at this wall. 🥹 As Imagineering legend Joe Rohde has said, nothing is accidental. Every design element has a place in the overall narrative of the park. Cuddle close. Scooch in. This may be the nerdiest post I've ever made, so you'll want to be ready for that. It's time for my first-ever Disney Data Investigation! Where I gather some data to prove (or disprove) a hypothesis I've made about the way Walt Disney World is doing something. In this case, during my last couple of WDW trips, I noticed that the parks and resorts felt pretty empty. No big crowds on the Boardwalk, plenty of space to roam around the World Showcase, and no parade or fireworks spots getting snagged hours in advance. But wait times are still decently high - in the medium range, when the crowds feel like they should be in the low range. So my hypothesis was that Disney was artificially lowering the capacity of some key attractions, making wait times longer everywhere. So naturally I took time out of my vacation to sit around and perform the glamorous task of timing intervals between ride vehicles at several attractions. Because once you know how often vehicles are being dispatched, you know how many vehicles are going through the attraction in an hour, and therefore how many people are experiencing the attraction each hour. Then I can compare this "real" capacity with the theoretical full capacity of the attraction. The results were pretty telling - headliners definitely weren't running anywhere near full capacity on the days that I was timing. And that has a potentially large impact on wait times at these attractions and around the park. It is almost certainly contributing to wait times (and therefore crowd levels) that are higher than we would expect, given the number of people in the park. Some of this is reasonable and expected - during lower attendance seasons, Disney can take several ride vehicles out of circulation for maintenance and repair. This lowers the capacity, but helps provide more reliability during more crowded times of year. Unfortunately ... we haven't really been seeing that increased reliability when it matters. Of course, it also allows Disney to save on some staffing costs and potentially encourage people to spend money on Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lane since standby waits are longer than they might be!

During his visit, he was in discussions about the potential Riverfront Square project with James P. Hickok, the president of the Civic Center Redevelopment Corporation. 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭: The project intended for St. Louis was known as “Riverfront Square.” Disney envisioned an indoor theme park that would take advantage of the city’s history and its connection to the Mississippi River. The park was to be built on the historic riverfront area near the Gateway Arch, which was under construction at the time. 2. 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬 & 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Riverfront Square was planned to feature a variety of attractions, including a Lewis and Clark adventure ride, a haunted house, and several other rides and shows reminiscent of those found in Disneyland. The park was designed to be an all-weather facility, capitalizing on the indoor concept to protect visitors from St. Louis's varied climate. 3. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 & 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Several challenges arose during the planning stages that ultimately led to the project's abandonment. One significant issue was financing and the demand from the local business community for Disney to sell alcohol at the park, which Walt Disney strongly opposed. Additionally, logistical and practical concerns related to the park's location and the feasibility of the indoor concept contributed to the project's demise.
